Upgrading alternator on sanger v210
Hey guys. So I recently put quite a big system in my 210 (3 pairs of rev10s, all interior wetsound speakers, 2 jl w6s.) I have 5 AMPs and 4 battery's. my little baby alternator can't handle it. Does anyone know a place to get heavy duty alternators 160-200 amps? If so let me know
Damn you fit all that on a.v210?!picturez?
You should be running a battery tender then 4 batteries would be plenty
Ill post some when I get home. Looks badass. But a stock 210 alternator puts out 68amps at 2000 rpms I've been told. That ain't ****! I want to get a 160-200amp.

Balmar is the best in the business. I assume you have a Mercury motor so here is a list of the proper alternators http://www.balmar.net/alternators.html
Looks like the 95 is what you are after |

I'm no expert on this but the regulator in the alternator should maintain the proper voltage as not to fry and electronics.
Another option for alternators is amptech. I'm running a 170amp in my boat and love it. If you have a standard v belt be ready to convert to dual v's or serpentine style pulleys. Regardless no matter where or who you buy from they should answer any and all of those questions as well as coach you through installation. http://www.mpowermfg.com/alternator.html I bought mine used and these guys were still great to work with. BTW all of their products are marine ready and coast guard approved. |
Any pics yet? What amps are you running to power each set of speakers?
If you have the ability to plug a charger in every night I would skip the bigger alternator and just put in more/better house bank batteries and just keep the banks completely separate for the most part. A decent alternator that is going to actually make a difference will end up being really expensive. Like Newty said if you have a single V belt just forget about. You are going to spend over a grand on a decent alternator, larger cables and custom pulleys.

Balmar is just getting into using the Denso 200A+ units that aren't huge and are beastly little alternators. I have seen them rated to around 270amps. I am not sure they will have a mount or even if it will fit but I can check for you. My company is a Balmar dealer and might be able to get you a pretty decent price if you go that route. |
How much do they cost?in general.
Polarbill. If you can find out which one will mount right up that would be awesome. My boat has a serpentine belt so I don't think I need to do any conversions. As for pics or my boat. I have no idea how to upload them lol
What is the size of the four batteries?
There napa deep cycle rv/marine batteries. All brand new
Honestly I think my stock alternator is just bad so it's not charging them at all. Where can you buy stock alternators?
You probably have a Delco 7si. We stock it under part number 19020609. It is a common hyster alternator as well. The brand new oem Delco shouldn't be too much so I would say go that way rather than buying a rebuild. I think we sell them for around $200 or so. You could have someone just open it up and fix what is bad but we like to call those "paint and prays".
If you have that system and are trying to charge those batteries with your stock 70 amp alternator it could very easily be possible that you have fried the alternator. |
With that many batteries you should be shore charging them. They will always be full and will last longer.
Looking at the 6 series Balmar again I don't think they actually have one that is a bolt in place for the Mercruiser mount. You can probably use their 1" foot mount alternator but would need to fab up some bushings to make it work. You may also want to get some measurements to make sure the distance from the front of the lower mount is the same on their alternator as your stock Delco unit.
I was told I could send a stock alternator to someone and they can rebuild it to produce more amps. Is this true?
Btw. Picture of my boat is now my profile pic |
I charge my batteries every time before I go out. By the end of the day my voltage alarm starts going off if I have my system cranked
That's insane system for a small boat!lol
I'd like to see the sub enclosures and amp rack
Yea I would prolly have yours rebuilt. I had one for my s10 blazer rebuilt to 210 Amp and it was awesome. I also had dual batteries in that suv.
I found a local shop to me that rebuilt and upped the amps for $200. |
Brett,
I would love to get more info on the Balmar stuff. Is there a number I can contact you at? Danny, Anyway you can descirbe the amps you are running for each set of speakers? |
I'm running arc ks450s for each pair of rev10s. An arc ks1000 for my subs and another ks450 for interiors
Danny,
That's a pretty amazing system, please post more pictures. Have you done any other modifications to the boat? |

Hey rob! Hows it going! Nope no other mods. I was gonna do the built in ballast and get it wrapped flat black but I think I am going to hold out and try and upgrade to a 215 before next summer. I really want perfect pass and built in ballast! Love the boat though! Have put 80hrs on it already since I bought it from you! gets used about 3 times a week! Ive been meaning to text you I want to get that guy who serviced it for yous phone number I want to get it done soon! Hope all is well
Danny |
Holy moley. Is it just me or is the V210 one of the best looking boats on the water? Sure I could be a little bias
X2
Ya they are bad ass lil boats for sure Ralph.
Hey Danny, The boat looks awesome. Wow 80 hours in a little over 2 months, sounds like you are enjoying it. The mechanic that worked on it last had a tragic family event about 2 months ago. I don't think he is doing any thing right now, probably best to find another mechanic.
Do you have pics of under your observer seat or how you fit all that in there?!
I have a '00 V210 and changed out my alternator around 2006. It didn't like having to charge the three batteries when we floated and used a lot of juice with the stereo. I took mine to a local electrical shop that i used to build alternators for me when I competed in car audio. For around $250 (back in 2006) I was able to get 215amps out of the stock altnerator case. I always had a battery buddy on my batteries when my boat was in my garage during the week.
My background comes from competing in car audio and all of my vehicles always had to have the alternator rebuilt for more power or new/multiple ones installed. My largest system in a car had six group 24 batteries and 12,000w for two 15s. Thinking back now, I should probably change out my batteries in my boat, as they are 9 years old, this October. |
Hey guys. So I have another tech question regarding the boat! Been getting a rough rough idle lately to the point where it dies. I changed the IAC. Helped a little but it still sounds like its chugging at low speeds or when you go from forward to reverse. Any ideas?
Is it a carb engine?
No it's fuel injected.
