Make sure you lift your toes up so ya dont face plant and lean back on your heels. Instead of tryin it in the flats, try it right at the top of the wake, cuz when ur turnin up there, half your board isnt even on the water, makes it a lil easier.

dude remember the toes, or else your dome peice is gonna feel it.

Another thing that helped me learn this was, when you are first getting up, dont staighten the board out right away. Just see how long you can slide sideways. Since you are just getting up, you will already be leaning back, so you most likely wont catch that font edge. You will probably end up sliding out on your butt. But once you get it, this will teach you the correct position to be in, meaning where to distribute your weight and how much to point your toes when you go to try the surface 180.

You may want to try having the driver slow the boat down to 14-15mph and then try your 180. Add speed as you feel more comfortable. This helped me quite a bit.

Ryan, One thing that has not been mentioned here is handle position. Any kind of on-axis rotation on a wakeboard should be initiated with the handle position, not with feet, head or body.
Think about this, if you are regular, the handle is aligned in front of your left hip. If you are goofy it is aligned in front of your right. If you want to rotate 180 degrees, in air or on water, simply move the handle across your body to the opposite hip and keep it there. Do this while keeping toes up like nick says and learn it at a slow speed like Katie suggests. Learning it this way will aid you in learning W2W 180's too.

yea try it at about 15 mph or i learned them on the insides of turns because teh boat speed is slower and what else do you have to do?

Do the fins on the board impact the ability to get it to turn. I can do this on a single trick ski but haven't been able to do it on my wakeboard yet (I have only ridden the new board once.) I have center fins installed on the board right now.

Center fins are definitely going to make the board tighter and resist spinning while in the water. It can still be done however as I ride with fins and have no problems rotating on the surface. It will take more effort and will be easier to catch an edge however.

I finally nailed a surface 180 and then back again thanks to advice here! I tried it right by the top of the wake and kept the toes up.
I learned the hard way about the toes!! My neck still hurts from that faceplant! It does help a bunch to have the boat slow down to learn. I also have center fins.
Thanks everyone!
