finally my boat is done. i put a remanufactured engine in(thanks nacho for your help) and i got the upholstery redone too. the upholstery cost me 350 in materials in which i got at cost and i spent 400 in labor. i took all the pieces to mexico and just reinstalled them today. its not perfect but im hoping the upholstery will stretch and settle in a little with time. i was quoted 3k in the US and paid a total of 750. so while im not 100 percent satisfied with the outcome i keep telling myself i saved 2300 bucks. the engine cost me about 1500 i took the old one out and put the new one in to save on labor. i got it fired up last night and broke in the camshaft. im going to take it to the river tomorrow to tool around. its supposed to be 81 tomorrow.

Upholstrey looks great, not 100%, but like 95%. You should be very happy with that.

dohboy 02-20-2009 4:53 PM

I think you want the upholstery to shrink right. It looks loose. Hey, what was that movie where those teens went to Mexico to have their car seats reupholstered and they were stuffed with sh#t. No pun intended your post just jarred that movie in my memory. Hope it works out.

I think it looks great Alan, nice job! Do you have any 'before' pics?

-Steve

Wow! What an improvement. Nice work..

azwakekid 02-20-2009 6:31 PM

it looks really nice!

wakesk8er2 02-20-2009 8:02 PM

Nice. My uncle has a 502 equipped 210 that could use an overhaul and I've always thought how sweet it would be to make a project out of it.

wakemania 02-20-2009 8:09 PM

The vinyl will shrink some with exposure to the sun and heat over the summer. It will look great and doesn't look bad at all right now.

hatepain 02-20-2009 8:47 PM

You outsourced your upholstery work? JK looks pretty darn good a hell of a lot better. Congrats it's like a whole new boat.

bftskir 02-20-2009 11:26 PM

dang good job

jmanolinsky 02-21-2009 7:13 PM

Wakemania is right. My new upholstery had some pretty good wrinkles in it until it sat in the sun for a while. It will probably look fine.

Jman

Nice work!!! How much was the refurbed engine? (if you don't mind me asking)

saceone 02-21-2009 8:30 PM

^^it says 1500$ in his 1st post.
looks allright, I'd let it sit in the sun for a while !

wakebrdr38 02-22-2009 7:17 AM

im not possitive but im pretty sure if you are realllllly careful that a heat gun will shrink that for you. I would do a small spot and reallllly take your time. That drivers seat looks really good btw

hatepain 02-22-2009 7:38 AM

I thought the same thing but I would be scared to try maybe even a blow dryer to start and go from there.

65sanford 02-22-2009 1:58 PM

It looks like a great improvement--start with the hair dryer to shrink--only use a heat gun if you are familialr with using one--hair dryer should do the trick to shrink it up a bit(then the sun won't start to bleach it out right away)

02-23-2009 8:35 AM

i have a heat gun but i think im going to hold out and see if the sun/time will take care of it

rio_sanger 02-23-2009 9:56 AM

Looks great Alan, nice job.

A summer in Yuma should take care of those wrinkles!

jmanolinsky 02-23-2009 10:16 AM

A few hours in direct sun will make a big difference. As you said, I would just wait and let the sun take care of it.

Jman

denverd1 02-24-2009 11:52 AM

Alan, no problem at all bro!! Glad to see you got it in there without any issues. Is the cam the same as stock on GT40's?

Interior looks like a new boat! Bet you're glad to have that teal outta there... Looks great man.

ccryder 02-24-2009 12:16 PM

Hey Alan,
Looks great, wish I was still coming down to ride..... Come a long way since the 205 with pumpless ballast.

wakex2wake 02-24-2009 12:20 PM

put some boobies in bikinis in those seats and you won't think another thing about the wrinkles in the vinyl

02-24-2009 7:59 PM

hey nacho that cam isnt the same. he used a comp cam part number 35-255-5 grind fw xe254h-14. i dont know what those numbers mean but he stated this was that cam to use for my application.

jim, i wish you were still coming down too, those were the good ole days! im moving to va in a few weeks.

madison_boarder 02-24-2009 8:17 PM

Wouldn't a hair dryer allow you to shrink the vinyl to fit? The guides I've seen to re-doing upholstery always show that as a vital step in the process.

02-24-2009 9:42 PM

brian i took a heat gun to a piece of the upholstery today. it did shrink in nicely however im just afraid im going to mess something up so im gonna leave it alone.

denverd1 02-25-2009 8:57 AM

Nice numbers on that cam! The original gt40 cams were damn good to start with. That comp has better torque in a low RPM range.

have you loaded it down yet? You've got a new boat there man!

innov8 02-25-2009 9:27 AM

Very nice, great job!!

tdiggity 02-25-2009 1:35 PM

for what you payed or i guess i should say what you saved id be stoked with the way the upholstery came out

tdiggity 02-25-2009 1:36 PM
