Removing painted on registration numbers

The previous owner of my boat painted the registration numbers on... Yes he painted them rather than use vinyl.

Whats the best way to remove them? I'm pretty sure lacquer thinner will dissolve them, but I'm worried it could harm the gelcoat. Anyone have any ideas?

Easy off oven cleaner. Didn't harm my gel and took the numbers right off.

I have taken many painted numbers off and have used acetone or lacquer thinner on a rag. Works very quick and easy. Will have to check out oven cleaner next and see what works better. I see lots of boats from California with the two tone painted numbers.
