Been cleaning the vinyl on my recently purchased boat. Lots of good tips here. Tried some Maguiars (sp?) vinyl cleaner and magic erasers. The magic erasers seem to work great and I picked up some 303 protectant. Is there anything that will take of the yellowish stains on the seats where the cushions but up against the backrests. It's stained yellowish and with some brown spots. The magic eraser helped, but didn't remove it completely. Is it there to stay or is there something else to try? I did read a post made a while back about Star brite mold and mildew cleaner and was thinking of ordering that but could only find it in a spray formula, not a chalky liquid like the poster stated and had pictured in the thread?

Have you tried good 'ol sunlight? If it's just mold, stick them in direct sunlight for a day or two, see if that helps. <BR> <BR>If they are stains from something else, it could be more of a problem. I have two stains that I cant seem to get rid of. One from a wet magazine and the other from a friends cheap wet suit. I was thinking about maybe dying them.

Sunlight will take out virtually every type of stain. It just takes time.

I'm in the same boat...no pun intended. I used the magic erasers and they did pretty well to clean dirt, etc. But, I have various yellow stains where the previous owner neglected to wipe down underneath the cushions. I'm assuming they are mold or mildew related. <BR> <BR>I tried the Starbrite vinyl cleaner and it worked okay, dulled the stains a little. I tried a mix of bleach/water and it didn't seem to work (though I was scared to really go for it and work it in). I'm going to try Oxi Clean and/or Mildew Cleaner I bought from the store. I want to try sunlight too, just not warm enough yet here. <BR> <BR>I'll let you know how it goes...Any other tips?

I just picked up some of the star brite too, haven't had a chance to try it yet though. Can't set em out in the sunlight yet, they'll freeze solid it's so freaking cold here right now. Suppose to be 12 degrees tonight.

Soft Scrub with bleach works great. You just need to use some armorall type protectant after because it will dry out you vinal.

Byron, I think the Armorall is on the "do not use list". Seems like the 303 protectant is a better choice.

Meguiar's makes an all purpose cleaner. I cut it 4 to 1 and use a vinyl brush to work into the seats and it cleans everything up very well. <BR> <BR><a href="http://www.meguiars.com/?detailer-engine-degreasers-car-cleaners/All-Purpose-Cleaner" target="_blank">http://www.meguiars.com/?detailer-engine-degreasers-car-cleaners/All-Purpose-Cleaner</a>

i had some stains that wouldnt come out with any of the above so what i did was take some bleach (be very careful) and use a q-tip. soak the q-tip and rub the stain out.

i have some mold that does not wanna come out, i tried mcquires vinyl cleaner and magic erasers and no luck, im gonna try oxy clean and a hard brush now!

deltadave 04-07-2007 2:14 PM

Hey entrust. If you put one part bleach and about five parts water in a spray bottle, spray it on the mold and let it sit a while, is should go away. Brush it a little with a hand floor brush if needed.

The starbrite mold and mildew spray worked very well. There are still some light spots, but it did better than any of the others I mentioned above.

where can you get the 303 and magic eraser??? i have been to 4 stores in the area, and nobody's even heard of it??? i'm in the dallas (denton) area. or do you just have to order it online?

alt_adjust 04-08-2007 1:51 PM

Magic erasers can be picked up at the grocery store. I get 303 from the marina I am docked at.

chaser 04-08-2007 7:15 PM

C.R., I found it at an automotive place, Checker Auto, also at a local Marine Store, and at a place called Toys for Trucks who basically sell accessories for trucks/suvs. You can also order it on line. If you go to their website you can punch in your zip code and they will list stores that handle it in your area. Here is the site: <BR><a href="http://www.303products.com/main.php?infopage=home" target="_blank">http://www.303products.com/main.php?infopage=home</a> <BR>The magic eraser stuff can be bought at Walmart like stores or grocery stores.

So why no armorall? I've cleaned my vinyl with it before, I used the wipes and it helped alot, and I wasn't worried about hurting it.

timsown 04-08-2007 8:09 PM

I didn't plan on buying any 303, but I was in West Marine today and saw it. I remembered all the comments I've read on this site about it so I bought a 16oz bottle ($15!) I must say, I was very impressed with how well the protectant worked. I've always been a magic eraser fan, and the 303 is a great follow up.

Rob, armorall has alot of water in it and will rot the thread that holds the upholstery together, as will alot of these other universal home cleaners. <BR> <BR>(Message edited by wake upppp on April 08, 2007)
