last week my brother in-law perferated his eardrum after a crash. What are some alternatives to protect this from happening. I know that not crashing would be the best but.... does anyone ride with earplugs. most helmets don't cover the ear very well, just looking for Ideas.

thanks
There is no way to completely prevent it. But you can minimize the chances. Plugs is your best bet. The ones Jonny is talking about sound really nice. But, I watched a guy blow his ear even with a helmet that protected his ears. I've blown mine twice. It's just one of those things that happens every once in a while.

I wear a ProTec helmet with ear guards and it works great. I started wearing it after I blew out my eardrum last Oct. Most helmets you get should include the ear guards too. I have taken a few falls this summer that would have definitely blown it out again if it wasnt for the guards. The helmet protects the melon too from serious headaches.
