Looking to upgrade my factory prop and wanted to get opinions/recomendations on which prop most are using and satisfied with. Not looking for a size, just which brand.

jeff_mn 01-20-2010 10:51 AM

I've got an ACME and I'm super happy with the results.

Honestly I don't think you can go wrong with either.

ralph 01-20-2010 11:02 AM

I've had great experiences with the team @ Acme but Eric from OJ seems like a top guy too. I agree you can't go wrong with either.

riverside 01-20-2010 11:06 AM

imo,.. a acme feels/drives smoother.

ottog1979 01-20-2010 11:09 AM

This is a good question that I've often considered also. Who has experience with similar props of both brands on their boat?

wakemania 01-20-2010 11:44 AM

I've spoken with both Bill at Acme and Eric at OJ. The acme recommended has a 10.5 pitch with a .06 cup and the recommended OJ has an 11 pitch with a .09 cup.

Can anyone tell me what difference the cup size makes (speed, hole shot, rpms, etc.) if any? I'm assuming the smaller pitch will give more hole shot and increase rpms as well.

I will be running about 2,000 lbs. max (including peeps). Is the 10.5 pitch overkill? I'm running a 12.125 now and very dissatisfied with the hold shot.

rio_sanger 01-20-2010 11:48 AM

I went from an OJ to an Acme, and the results were as expected. But only because I went from 4 to three blades, lower pitch, and CNC machined. Now that OJ is doing the CNC, I would imagine the same pitch prop of either brand would be tough to tell any difference. I wouldn't hesitate with either brand.
Also, I've gotta give props (pun intended) to a guy like Eric, who's last name is on the prop, and he posts on Wakeworld!

spencerwm 01-20-2010 11:53 AM

I have used both OJ and Acme on a 2005 Malibu VLX. Both companies make solid props. You are not going to go wrong either way but there is enough difference between the manufacturers that you should figure out exactly what you are looking for and research them. For me the OJ 466 didn't have the hole shot that the Acme 1235 did although if I had to drive a distance to get to the place where we ride I would definitely go with the OJ.

That said I have put an Acme prop on my buddies 2008 Centurion Avy and the results were great. We were running about 2k of ballast at elevation and his father still wanted to be able to ski so finding the perfect prop was key. Wakemania, what prop was recommended to you?

wakemania 01-20-2010 12:17 PM

Spencer, Acme - 911 (13x10.5,.06), OJ - 324(13x11,.09)

01-20-2010 12:58 PM

Spencer - our 14.25 X 14.5 runs much better than the 14.25 X 14 (466) on the Malibu's. I have also built a 14.75 X 13 that is a beast out of the hole, worth a try on a very heavily weighted boat but not one you want to make long trips with.

wakemania - you should see lower overall RPM with our 13 X 11 compared to the 10.5, low end may be a little better with the 10.5( more cup in the 11 should make the difference small if any) but top end should be better with the 11, better may be 1-2 MPH, again small difference.

chris - thanks for the props. I do try and support our products and those that choose them.

wakemania 01-20-2010 2:18 PM

Thanks Eric. You think the 13 x 11 would work fine for about 1,500 lbs in ballast plus people (maybe 2,000 lbs altogether)? I could go for the lower RPMs if the pitch is sufficient. Like I said, the 12.125 pitch is not happening even with 1,000 lbs. Would I see a large differenc between the 12.125 and 11?

brucemac 01-20-2010 2:46 PM

+1 OJ
eric is the man

01-21-2010 3:39 AM

Wake - You should see an improvement with the 11 over the 12.125. If you do purchase one of our props and are not happy with the performance I will take it back or re work it for you at no charge.

Thanks Bruce.

kylenautique 01-21-2010 8:51 AM

Here is the difference...

ACME: is a smoother feeling prop. There is a reason all Supra and Moomba boats droppped OJ and went to ACME. They are always ahead of the curve with prop technology. They have a prop for every boat for every application. You want to slam the hell out of your boat, they have a prop for you. As long as you don't damage it, if you dont like it, ACME will take it back and exchange it free of charge for a different prop. Down sides, ACME blades are thinner then an OJ and will bend easier.

I did some back to back comparison on the OJ vs ACME, and the ACME was smoother and gave the boat we were testing it on a better hull shot.

Either one you are going to be happy with, but if it were me, I would buy ACME

01-21-2010 9:57 AM

Acme makes a good product, as do we. Not going to bash another company's products here or anywhere. What I will try and do it dispell some of the rumors that are thrown around as fact.

Kyle - Supra - Moomba use our props from the factory have for many many years and continue to do so. Not sure where you got that info. We continue to test and develop props with them. In fact our new 14.25 X 14.5 FUSION was developed on the Supra with the factory guys. As I have posted here before, the new prop outperformed the other brand in all aspects. Supra data, not mine.

Ahead of the curve....We were the first prop company to design a propeller specifically for the heavily weighted wake boats. The larger diameter lower pitch wakeboard props initially came from OJ PROPS. The first size I made, several years ago, was a 14.25 X 14. This prop was out long before they decided it was a good idea. We have since added and continue to add many other sizes to fit various motor and transmission combos. These same sizes, or very similar sizes, show up from the other guys as we introduce them. Not bashing, just trying to clear some things up.

We have had the "if you are not happy you can return it" policy in place for almost 20 years.

The Acme's are thinner. Thin can give you an edge in MPH, maybe 1-2, but will shorten the life of the prop. A thinner prop is more difficult to repair as well.

Before I address your smoothness issue let me know what boat you tested and what props you tested.

kylenautique 01-21-2010 10:26 AM

Hey Eric

I'm going to apologize here. I didn't mean to come off bashing your brand. OJ makes very good products. I got all my prop information from prop dealers and talking with OJ and ACME. OJ makes a great prop. So does ACME. The boat we tested on was a 07 Mobius XLV. I don't remember the prop size and pitch, but the 2 props were completely the same and with the ACME the boat got up on plane a little faster loaded down. As for the smoothness, I didn't notice any difference.

My ahead of the curve comment was the prop blade design. I was told that ACME was first to CNC props in making oversized blades and adding the texture to the blade to help throw the water more instead of a smooth blade. Thats all I was getting on in that. If I'm wrong, please let me know.

As for my Supra Moomba comment, sorry if my info was false. Thats what I was told.

What I was trying to get at is that both prop companies are good. I prefer ACME, but I will totally agree with you ACME props can be a pain because they do get damaged easier due to the thinner blade.

I didn't mean any dis respect to the OJ product. The guy wanted an opinion on the two. My opinion is I feel ACME performs a little better, but they are not as tough as an OJ. Honestly you can't go wrong with either or.

01-21-2010 10:41 AM

Kyle - No worries, no disrespect taken. I just wanted to clear a few things up. I too hear some of the things you posted, Supra / Moomba no longer uses our props. Well, since we deliver every week I know that to be false. I do know some dealers do not like our 14.25 X 14 on some later model LSV's and prefer a smaller diameter prop. I also know why the larger diameter props make noise on that hull specifically.

They did introduce the first CNC machined prop. We were a year behind them. The lines on the machined props do not do anything with regards to performance. Just a function of the tool paths.

Agree. Acme makes a good product. I think we both do. I did not want it to sound like I was saying Acme's are a pain, just noting they are thinner overall than ours.

I'd be happy to let you run the new prop we built to hear your thoughts.

Feel free to give me a call - 800-359-9730

Eric Johnson

kylenautique 01-21-2010 11:04 AM

Sure thing Eric! I will hit you up later today. I don't remember the prop specs on the ACME on the XLV, but its brand new. I think its a 14x14.25... If you want, I could do a prop comparison and write you up something stating the difference from the 2. It would be totally un bias too cause its not like I'm sponsored or anything! hah

I will hit you up later today.

Kyle

toneus 01-21-2010 1:41 PM

I bought an OJ prop for exactly what you all just read. The man provides solid information, accurate facts, an excellent product, stands behind that product, respects his competition, and is willing to work with you. Case closed.

Again, as I've said before... Thanks Eric for the help us gave me, and the product you sold me. Still happy as a pig in the brown stuff with you and your product!

Keep up the good work.

guido 01-21-2010 4:34 PM

Eric, We'll be hitting you up come spring time. We've been running a ACME on our X-star that we had re-pitched last year. We've got the 6.0 motor and aren't getting the results we're looking for with a loaded boat. The 4500 rpm ride speed just isn't cutting it.

It's nice to see guys like yourself that jump on the forums and help us all get the most performance out of your products. Thanks for taking the time.

hillbilly 01-21-2010 5:26 PM

Eric I have an 07 Moomba LSV and was wondering why the prop makes the growl/vibration on the hull?
And would you recommend a different prop since I run close to 3k in my LSV ?

Thanks JH

h20king 01-21-2010 6:24 PM

im sure im going to get bashed for this one but i run a cutter stainless steel and love it.it is smooth durable and holds speed great

guido 01-21-2010 6:26 PM

Jeff... you need more weight. Ha, ha, ha.

01-21-2010 6:40 PM

Harold: not bashing, but make sure you dont strike that stainless or you will have more problems than just a simple prop repair. I hate to admit that I repair my prop just about every year. Maybe its my driving, maybe its where I ride. I like stainless props, but it just doesnt work for most inboarders.

h20king 01-21-2010 6:58 PM

I have been useing them for years and have never had to have any repairs.as long as you dont hit a log or rock ur ok. no damage from sticks. we boat on a river and nibral just wont hold up

hillbilly 01-21-2010 7:34 PM

It's only a Moomba Evan give her a break....lol

It has the little motor in it !
Besides it and I don't need that much...HAHA

innov8 01-22-2010 8:53 AM

I would go with O.J. that's all we run now, we used to run ACME, until we used an O.J.

01-25-2010 3:42 AM

Jeff - Give me a call and we can discuss what we can do.

Guido - Our 14.75 X 15.5 is running really well with the 6.0.

The Cutter prop was a decent prop. It was a copy of our FORCE 4-blades, as are the Ambush props. The Cutters were imported from China.

bmartin 01-25-2010 8:05 AM

Getting it pitched correctly is more important than the brand IMO and both vendors provide excellent support and suggestions for propping and sizing it for your boat / weight and driving preferences. I have an older OJ and an ACME and both get the job done. The ACME are thinner and I do get a slight 'whine' or 'whistle' with that one on - not really an annoyance but if you listen for it you can hear it. Had the ACME repaired without issue but it was only a minor repair so they are repairable but guess it depends on how much reshaping has to be done.

thesack 01-25-2010 8:35 AM

I've ran both the OJ 466 and ACME 1235 props on my Supra Launch 21V. The ACME performs better for me with having 3K lbs of weight in the boat.

Jeff -
With regards to the vibration/growl that you are hearing/feeling it can be caused from a variety of different things (bent shaft, unbalanced prop, shaft alignment, warn bearing, defective bearing, etc). More then likely its probably an unbalanced prop. Even the slightest nick in a prop can cause unbalance and be felt in the boat. So check your prop for nicks. If the vibration isn't really noticeable I wouldn't worry about it too much, if its progressively getting worse I would take the prop off and make sure that it is the problem. Even if its a new prop that you just put on it can still be unbalanced. I know that both OJ and ACME static balance there props and have good quality control, but every once in awhile an unbalance prop will make it through. I just wish that both OJ and ACME would switch from static balancing to dynamic balancing. Static balancing does work well and has been used for decades. But in my opinion having the specific numbers that the prop was balanced to and under what conditions that you get from dynamic balancing gives more peace of mind to everyone.

rlsv211 01-25-2010 9:36 AM

I was told the larger props make that noise because the water is forced off the bottom of the boat.

thesack 01-25-2010 12:43 PM

The larger props can cause there to be a noise difference. But you are probably only going to notice the noise difference if you switch from a certain size prop to another.

wakemikey 01-25-2010 1:08 PM

Jeff I got a prop last year brand new. Put it on and it vibrated like crazy. Tried a bunch of stuff with no luck. Other props were fine. Sent it bacl, they retuned it and shaved one blade down and it is smooth as silk now.

hillbilly 01-25-2010 1:34 PM

Well I know some other Moomba owners have commented on the "growl" on another website, And I thought he made reference to my hull (LSV) in an above post? I just deal with it. And I did switch from the stock to the 14x14.25.

tracktor 01-25-2010 2:49 PM

I run an OJ 475 on a 98 VLX. It's been an excellent prop and performs well no matter if the boat is loaded or empty. I do like the fact that it is a bit heavier as we ride where there can be mild debris in the water depending on time of year. I would rather replace/repair a prop than the drivetrain but don't want to be fixing the prop evertime I hit a small stick..............
