Anyone else notice all the debris this weekend? I understand natural debris...trees, weeds etc but we pulled out several Creosote covered timbers. Several that we pulled out were like 3 inches thick, 12 inches wide and 10 feet long. All had nails sticking out and one had several 8 inch spikes as fat as my fingers. We yanked about 7 in all.

We were mostly on Vics and over by Union point when we came across these beasts. Anyone have a clue where they could have come from?

I also want to say thanks to anyone else who saved a prop, a hull, or even a life this weekend by pulling crap out of our waterways.
Thank you!

no debris where we were...'cept like you said, natural debris.

I think this has to have been the most unusual wind pattern I have observed in a long time on the delta!

On Friday the wind blew so hard I almost didn't launch the boat. Fortunately, the wind just died Friday afternoon (about the time it normally picks up) and we managed to get the houseboat out to our favorite area (Mildred) and get anchored.

Nice and calm Friday night, and most the day Saturday, and then the wind blew all Saturday night, except from the south instead of the north-west. I hadn't anchored in a good spot for a south wind.......

Then all day Sunday there was no wind at all. None!

That was great, except the strong wind from the opposite direction of the prevailing winds managed to dislodge every piece of floating debris and Water Hyacinth! There were times it was like driving an obstacle course to avoid the patches of Water Hyacinth, and there were times that I had no choice but to drive right through the middle.

It was still great though. A bit of traffic during peak hours, but the "before breakfast" and "after dinner" runs were priceless!

I heard about the Friday wind...must have really been something...but it stopped just in time.

& Yeah, the Hyacinth was out in force...and man, that stuff is so much fun to ollie. Lots of ollie practice this weekend for sure. Out on old river we came upon a gi-normous patch that was about 15x15 & 4 foot tall...and I was setting up for the ollie of a lifetime. But the driver got too close and I was way out of position...and way out of speed...so I made my best Don Knotts face and rode right through the middle. I had crap stuck in my bindings and all in my vest...we laughed all the way home.

I'm OK with the Hyacinth...

Yeah Friday it blew up to 40MPH. We hit the main channel across from Rio Vista for a short period and it was victory at sea, huge white caps everywhere! We decided to take a chance and head up to Old Town Sac anyway through the back sloughs and then hit the channel the rest of the way. I was surprised when it wasn't too bad of a ride after all. Saturday we found a protected area and had great water. Sunday was just peer glass even on the main channel.
|
But yes debris everywhere. Not man made ones though like you mention
|
Boy i'm glad i missed the hurricane winds on friday. But sat and sun were awesome. Especially sunday afternoon. Victoria's was empty! Never saw too much debris except the usual. Oh, gotta give a shout out to Ones and Zeros! Awesome band that played sunday night at Woody's (old Discovery Joe's)
|
What's the good word on Woodys? I didn't even know that Discovery Joes went out of business.
|
From what i know, they sold to new owners and they renamed it.
|
What about Union Point bar and grill? Looks like that is for sale right now. Anyone know anything?
|
Wouldn't it be cool if someone fixed up Union Pt. and served some decent food.
|
what's your definition of "decent"? they serve burgers that are decent, chicken sandwiches that are good, patty melts so good it'll kill you, and good margaritas. what more can you expect from a bar & grill sittin' in the middle of nowhere on hwy 4?
|
Sorry Joe,
It appears I hit a soft spot. I think the food is OK, but WAY to greasy for my taste. I guess it's not possible to make some fresh dishes all way out there on Hwy 4. That 10 miles to Disco Bay is quite a distance! I'm thinking any Togos sandwich is better then anything at the Snack Bar. I do agree with you on the cold drinks. Maybe I'll see you out there sometime.
|
no no no, not a soft spot at all. i just think sometimes we should be thankful that there's something decent to eat at all at the delta.

if you ever make it out to the stockton side of the delta, check out garlic brothers. you can get there by both car and boat. great food and awesome drinks!
|
Yes Joe,
I've heard alot of good things about Garlic Brothers. You're right, I may take Union Point for granted, but there's nothing wrong with hoping for better.
|
I'll fix it up...with the condition that I could live on site. That would be an awesome location for a home. Jump outta bed and hop in the boat and hey what do you know I'm already at vics. cool...

OK here's my plan...using the money I've just won from the lottery of course.
Renovate the restaurant and bar, not to make them upscale but rather to just bring them into this century. This would include a way faster kitchen and be designed so that the ordering line doesn't go through the middle of the bar. A play area for the kids would be nice too. Maybe something with water works or some kinda sprinklers and pools.

I would have a Board shop onsite where you could not only buy gear but also demo boards by the hour. Maybe have lessons available and even a boat to offers pulls for a price. And yes, a tackle shop too...can't forget about our bass buddies.

Oh and I might fix the docks up a little too.
|
mr. vogt what are you doing posting at 5:48am?? ok i realize im not much better. ok, fine, im not any better at all!

btw if you could make union point a BIT quicker at cooking/preparing food that would be most excellent.
|
I'm an early bird power commuter...Up at 3:30 on the road by 4 to work by 5. I live in tracy and drive into san jose every day...'bout 75 miles. Oh and I usually get to bed around 10:30 or 11:00...Yawn...
|
Union Point makes a really good chef salad:-) The staff are very friendly too (gotta love Gayle, the bartender). Gayle makes THE BEST Mai Tai's I have ever had. However, the place does need a good face lift. You know when they start nailing down ply wood on the docks to keep them from falling apart, it's gotta be bad!
|
Greg,
I like your thinking, especially a place for the kids. It would be great for all us that go there, however, we've all heard of "if you build it they will come". In this case I don't want to see them come. I'm happy with it the way it is, no more people please. Let them stay over on the Stockton side and visit Garlic Brothers.
|
I talked to the bartender yesterday. He said the owner would take 1 million for it. If I had a million to invest...........................
|
Gregg, when you win the lottery, don't forget the stadium lights all the way down vic's for some night riding.
|
Made a note of it Mark...(great Idea)
Seeing how If I'm gonna buy the point, I might as well buy Vics too and make an exclusive club out of it. (how nice would it be to have control of that waterway? - insert evil laugh here- )

The current lottery is only 30 million...after taxes and all...hmmmm. I think I need just a little more.
