That must be a slow hull because 700hp in a 24 foot boat should get you faster than 82mph. Guys are getting mid 80's out of Fountain 29's with a 525 in it.

rallyart 02-02-2010 11:01 AM

I know a guy with a big block in his pontoon boat that can pull 79mph. It does go through some gas but at that speed the aerodynamics of the pontoon shpae start to affect the speed.

My intent was to make fun of him, not discuss his boat!

polarbill 02-02-2010 12:26 PM

Yeah, I figured that and I always find it funny when people put that kind of remark in their ad. I like to discuss boats to.

psudy 02-02-2010 12:29 PM

about the boat though, we rode in a guys 725hp(Keith Black motor) Warlock(kind of a cat hull) years ago, and it went 103mph. Man was that thing fun. So I would think that BAJA should do more than that.

882001 02-02-2010 12:32 PM

cats are way more efficient

polarbill 02-02-2010 12:57 PM

That warlock was probably a tunnel hull. Like 882001 said they are way more efficient. For example my old roommates friend has a 36 foot Nortech Cat with twin blown 900 hp big blocks. It does in the 135-140 range I believe. A 35-38 foot Vhull with that power probably maxes out at 110-120. Baja's are also not known to have fast hulls. They are more known for solid rides in rough water. There are very few Baja's that can hit triple digits. In fact it is somewhat rare for any v hull to hit triple digits unless they have ridiculous power. Pretty much every cat out there hits 100.

I rode in a guys 19' river racer that is a tunnel hull last summer. He has a Merc 2.5 running around 300-320hp and we hit 98 with 3 big guys in the boat and choppy water. I think he said that it would hit 110-115 tops.

In my experience, Baja's do have slow hulls, but this guy should be able to hit more than 82. Maybe he didn't have it trimmed out right. I've seen 23 foot Baja's in the 450hp range do high 70's. I don't think that Bajas are known for solid rides in rough water. You want a V that rides well in rough water, and hauls butt, then you need to get out your checkbook, and get a Cigarette. I think Baja's are more the Chevy Camaro of power boats.
As a side note, a guy on the river here has a cat that I have never seen opened up, but it cruises comfortably at around 65. Cats are amazing. If money were no object, there would be a Skater parked next to the X Star.

polarbill 02-02-2010 3:58 PM

Yeah, cig's are awesome. They still win the big pimpin award for offshore Vhulls from what I have read. I would love a sit down cockpit Gladiator with twin staggered 700's and NXT drives. But then again I would rather have a Nortech 36' supercat.

02wakesettervlx 02-02-2010 4:03 PM

River racers are a different story. Scary fast, and way too low. I have a friend that's really into that Merc 2.5, little 19' boat. I won't even ride with him. That thing scares the hell out of me.

polarbill 02-02-2010 4:05 PM

Here is a video of the guy I know doing a 110+ mph flyby in his Nortech past some friends.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPF4mE-fsBQ&NR=1

Brett, no offense but your friend may not be the smartest guy out there.

mendo247 02-02-2010 4:32 PM

Most fun I've ever had in a boat (well almost lol) was in a big ol Fountain crusing across Berryessa in the high 90's.. The sound of triples screaming across a lake cant be beat. I didnt think it was gonna be much fun but I still think someday when I'm older and not into water sports I'll add a big go fast to the collection.

Minus the paint thats not a bad boat.

If I was in that wake boat I would have bounced a beer off the side of that Cat! I know of a guy who was doing that and ended up going through the back of a Houseboat killing acouple people.

polarbill 02-02-2010 8:01 PM

I think it is a little too close as well. The guy driving is an experienced offshore driver but who knows what could happen at those speeds.

7 batteries for 2 1000 watt amps? What are those D cell batteries?
