Actually, don't ride on the swimstep of a moving boat. In CA that's illegal, I think in TX too...anyway...85!!!! I can't TELL you how fortunate I feel that we went yesterday in the rain and cold rather than today, with the sun out and those nasty 4 mph gusts.

PLUS, another thing I am SSSSOOOOO thankful for about yesterday was the lack of glare. When it's overcast and dark, you don't need sunglasses. Maybe a flashlight, but not sunglasses.

Dang it I couldn't find a second let a lone a third to ride in 38 degree air and maybe 40 to 45 water temps, wind, sleet, and driving rain yesterday. The sculling crews are apparently are more manly than the local wakeboarders.

Riding is 85 air temps is for little girls.

Sculling crews

I still don't understand what's so impressive with the holding/ drinking a beer in pics.

First of all, it's not really sending a good message to potential sponsors that are quietly keeping tabs on sites like this. Second, I guess I just don't see what's so hard about standing up and holding something in your hand. Looks boring to me.

Real men provide a good example to others

souperfly 04-15-2007 8:47 AM

First off I yelled at my friend for jumping out onto the swim deck for the pic, because it is my boat, my responsibility.

Having a drink while surfing is a novelty move to "impress" the people on the boat. More often people through the beer back at the surfer more than the surfer asking for it.

Personally I rarely drink while surfing because you loose the ability to do anything but stand there and, well, drink.

Plus they took the pic late because I was drinking and smoking! <~~ Real man.

Finally, my boat being a DD, there's not much to do besides stand there. Wake really isn't impressive enough to really get any airs, maybe a few slides.

bigshow 04-15-2007 9:05 AM

Is Mountain Dew OK? I know, I know, in that picture it's not the drink that's offensive, it's the shorts

I think an interesting wakesurf trick would be juggling. I don't juggle, but at a competition I'd score a successful three ball juggle pretty high because I haven't seen anyone do it yet. Doing something like having a drink demonstrates some level of control and something you can’t do in other wakesports.

I have this idea; I want to iron a shirt while I’m surfing. Start off on a big board like an IS Red. Have my crew pass an ironing board, a shirt, and a gas powered iron back to me via a tow rope. Then return the iron, ironing board, and the ironed shirt back up the rope. http://www.extremeironing.com/

The idea is borne out of my wife’s work researching linguistic terms. In her work she stumbled across an Extreme Ironing” web site. The idea is that extreme sports have become so common place that they’re no long extreme. So why not add a mundane, common place aspect like ironing a shirt to an extreme sport.

I'm not a big fan of drinking and boating, I'm already having a lot of fun I don't need anything else to further enhance the experience.

caskimmer 04-15-2007 9:42 AM

Brandon,
I didn't mean to come off so condescending or negative. Although I've never done it I can see how it takes more balance then doing the same thing without it in your hand (esp. when throwing the rope).
I just saw a few red flags and commented when I shouldn't have.

I agree with the points you made. Personally I don't like to drink when I ride for the same reasons but that's just me. I realize fun comes in many forms and what appeals to me might not appeal to anyone else.

(Message edited by caskimmer on April 15, 2007)

(Message edited by caskimmer on April 15, 2007)

caskimmer 04-15-2007 9:44 AM

...and that looks pretty good for a DD. How's it weighted?

malibu 04-15-2007 11:53 AM

Real women ride even when there is ice! These pictures are from Dec. '05. I surfed the same location last winter and rode over a little ice that was broken up from boat traffic.
I haven't surfed in 3 weeks since the boat is broken. Waiting for a replacement part is not fun!

caskimmer 04-15-2007 12:03 PM

wow, now that's commitment!

bigshow 04-15-2007 12:05 PM

Now I feel like a girly man. I saw Sue's December ride post some time ago. Sue can ride with us any time!

malibu 04-15-2007 1:13 PM

Edward maybe I should jump on a plane to OH so we can go surfing. I hope to get the boat back by this weekend. No one around here is riding yet, so we pretty much have the water to ourselves. I think it's warm enough for a wetsuit now.

bigshow 04-15-2007 2:32 PM

I know that at least one wakeboard crew has already been out but that was about three weeks ago before the weather got sour.

You know that’s almost funny, jumping on a plane, leaving a west coast state heading for Ohio to go surfing Maybe wakesurfing has come along way!

The spring weather cork is going to pop next week so hardcore riders will emerge pretty soon, most other riders won’t be out until June.

Anyway Sue, if you ever do get out this way you’d be welcome to ride with my crew any day.

04-15-2007 2:55 PM

OMG! Ice! I thought we had the corner on the obsession, I am humbled by Sue's ice cube surfing. Dennis quit your whining!

dennish 04-15-2007 3:04 PM

JEFF,
Seek professional help for your delusional and obsessive compulsive behavior. You never heard me complain. Though ice to the face in a fall would be scary.

malibu 04-15-2007 7:21 PM

Thanks for the offer Edward .
I am pretty addicted to wakesurfing. I am always ready to ride. Good thing my husband likes to drive the boat. I would like to find some good surfers to ride with so I can learn some tricks. I am usually teaching others how to surf. I tried a 360 on my Phase Five but I didn't make it around and the board hit me in the shin on the way down. I'll keep trying though.

bigshow 04-15-2007 7:57 PM

No problem hubby can drive for me too.

I've been working on my 3. I get all the way around but I lose the wake. Heck I did a 720 on a Trick Boardz Free Style but it doesn't count when you lose the wake.

Sue, let's have a friendly competition, let's see who can pull it off first this year. Since it's a bit of a commute we'll have to use the honor system. Heck, I think we should start a new post for people to declare that they completed their first 3 for 2007.

souperfly 04-16-2007 9:50 AM

Sean,

Its cool man, no big deal.

Here's the setup:

Bow Compartment: 250lbs lead
Ski Locker: 350lb water ballast + 200 lead
Rear: 440lbs on the side and 440lbs behind the engine

Total around 18-1900lbs

And the Malibu Wedge down. Not sure if it helps yet because of the angle of the boat compared to the angle of the wedge at 9mph.

Here's a pic from yesterday:

bigshow 04-16-2007 9:56 AM

I'd like to know the story on the Wedge. I keep hearing up and down. My intuition and my experience with a different brand boat makes me think up is better but I don't have much practical experience.

There's going to be an LSV rigged for surf at Norris next weekend. I'd love to see first hand what moving the wedge does.

fuller313 04-16-2007 10:11 AM

I put my power wedge at halfway and it cleans up the wake and puts more power behind the wake.

malibu 04-16-2007 10:32 AM

Edward, sounds good. I will keep you informed on my 3's as soon as I have a boat to surf behind. It is kind of a long commute from Idaho to Ohio, so I will try and get some pictures on our next ride. Joe and I would be happy to have you join us if you ever come this way.

bigshow 04-16-2007 3:27 PM

Closest I get is Richland, WA been a while since I've been there no plans any time soon.

I should get out this weekend, can't wait for the first ride of the season.

malibu 04-17-2007 9:46 AM

My boat is being fixed today! I should get out to Lake Lowell on Sat. It's suppose to be 64 and cloudy but thats good enough for me. Can't wait to ride again.

kal_dude 04-17-2007 10:16 PM

looks like it was a blast for the boat driver!!!!!!!!!

valsurfer 04-20-2007 1:59 PM
