Any thoughts. I am torn between the 2

Wait til the PMA show on Feb 16th. Canon should be annoucing the 20D's replacement. Since the rebate program on the 20D just ended there is no advantage there and if a new 20D (30D?) is annouced the market will become flooded with used 20Ds at excellent prices. If you like the Nikon there is probably no reason to wait. (then again Nikon may have something new to offer at PMA too!)

blake_hughes 01-22-2006 10:23 PM

Damn, I don't know if I could handle the releasing of a 30D... I already want the 20D more than anything! However, if that is the case, and any of you want to get rid of your 20D, let me know.

-Blake

dakid 01-23-2006 11:25 AM

wouldn't the nikon d200 be better comparison for the canon 20d?

it's no 20d, but i'm diggin' my d70.

I had to decide between the D70 and the 20D when looking for my camera. I figured the extra $300 was worth it for 2 FPS more, 2mega pixels, and faster focusing as well as some other odds and ends, so I got the 20D. Not sure how the D70s though really campares. Althoguh I haven't really needed the extra 2mp's or the extra fps but they are good to know I have just in case.

edited* 'cause I can't spell

(Message edited by mattyboyr6 on January 23, 2006)

I just read that Nikon uses a Sony CCD....that tapped the last nail in the coffin.

Thanks all.

getssum 01-23-2006 8:20 PM

So does Canon... Canon and Nikon don't build the ccd's. they don't have the facilities. they subcontract sony out to do them...

either way you go, both will treat you well. compare the prices of the lenses that you will want to buy as well, because the lenses make the camera.

rson 01-23-2006 8:33 PM

Actually you are wrong.....Canon uses a proprietary CMOS sensor that they developed.

http://web.canon.jp/Imaging/cmos/index-e.html

I looked at Nikon Lenses....they feel cheap. The only lens with a metal mounting ring was the one that came with the camera.

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Nikon/nikon_d70s.asp

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Canon/canon_eos20d.asp

(Message edited by rson on January 23, 2006)

canon USED to use ccd sensors in their old 1 series cameras.

rson 01-23-2006 9:03 PM

I looked at www.dpreview.com and cannot find where canon used sony CCd's. Even in the 1d series.

richd 01-24-2006 6:19 AM

Sony hasn't done Nikon any big favors with CCD development, while Canon has devised ways of producing affordable larger CMOS chips with low noise Sony has been busy figuring out ways of cramming more photosites onto smaller chips. I did a double take when I read that post because Canon has been lauded from a business standpoint for taking the risk and putting out the R&D and mfg. development $ a number of years back with their CMOS program. I think the 1D used a Matsu****a chip which was the last CCD used in a Canon DSLR and it was used primarily because at the time they couldn't get the buffer speed they needed with CMOS.

rson 01-28-2006 8:16 PM

What do you think about lenses? I am looking for the best all round lens.

richd 01-29-2006 7:06 AM

The best all around lens for what kind of shooting? For WBing with the Canon any of the 70-200L's or the new 70-300IS. I like the 24-105L as my general purpose walk around lens. On the 20D the 17-85IS is a great performer. Sigma 70-200 is supposed to be a great lens. If you are considering the D70, I would look at the D50. It is considerably cheaper than the D70 and is nearly identical. I own a D50 and love it. The differences that I am aware of between the D50 and D70 are:

D70 does 1/8000 shutter speed, D50 only 1/4000. This is still fast enough to freeze the wings on a humming bird.

The D70 can control remote flashes. You need a device to do it on the D50. I don’t plan to do this anyhow.

You can manually tweak custom white balance settings on the D70 and can't on the D50. You can still use a white card to set the white balance on the D50.

As far as lenses go:

I have been quite happy with my Nikon kit lens (18-55mm, F3.5-4.5).

I would like to get a longer focal length lens for wakeboarding shots. I will probably get a 100mm macro lens that does F2.8 or so. I really value small aperture lenses for low lighting, and the ability to get shallow depth of field.

I also want to get a 30mm F1.4 lens for my camera for very low light without a flash.

-Philip

Joe, are we supposed to call that 'The Black' at night? Cool pic!

Thanks for everyones help.

Anyone need a Sony DSC f717?

Congratulations!! indeed.

Great pictures. Very cute. Could be just me but they seem to have a blue tint to them. I also just woke up from a nap so I may be way off.

rson 03-18-2006 10:19 PM

Yeah they are a little "cool"

But it is offset by the red tulips.

scott_a 03-18-2006 11:22 PM
