I know it's a ski boat but could be the shape of things to come! VW diesel powered Prostar unveiled at IWSF World Cup stop in Ireland.

http://www.planetwaterski.com/report/dmc.htm

Yeh, I read that elsewhere. I think you'll start to see many diesels going into towboats over the next 3-5 years. I don't think that 3.0L VW engine would be a good match for a weighted wakeboat (only 330ft/lbs), but I'm sure it does wonderfully in the 190. If MC is gonna stick with VW they need to talk them into marinizing the V10 turbo diesel. 300hp/550 ft/lbs (and it gets 22mpg) in an X-star.....oh yeah!

Never will happen in California or United States for that matter.

bocephus 08-16-2006 8:12 AM

What about the Session Daman? It's been advertised in Wakeboarding Magazine for months...

peter_c 08-16-2006 8:20 AM

The CARB and EPA set the standards not California. There are lots of diesel boats sold every day in California.

tyler97217 08-16-2006 8:31 AM

yeah isn't VW having a hard time getting the US to let them import TDI's now and into the future? Anyone know about this?

bocephus 08-16-2006 8:38 AM

I know when I looked at a TDI Jetta for an appraisal car the dealer told me this is the last year for a while.

gti2lo 08-16-2006 8:44 AM

no just re-engineering the engines to be even cleaner, North America has the poorest fuel standard, yet the EPA want emissions like Europe.

VW has their whole fleet of TDI cars/Suv comming out in 2008 again.. from the Jetta, Golf, maybe Passat and Touareg.

tyler97217 08-16-2006 8:59 AM

interesting... I heard it was more of a government and oil company scnadal. Something to the effect that the US was putting high tarrifs on the VW diesels and VW said we can just sell the gassers here and sell the diesels in Europe. This was the last year of the Jetta TDI and last year was the last of the Pasatt TDI just in the US though.
This could all be hearsay and rumor, but it makes sense to some extent, because the big oil companies profits are going to start to decrease slowly as all of these alternative diesel fuels hit the market place and get popular. This could be a great way to keep those alternative diesel prices higher than #2 diesel.
Interesting stuff and I hope they do come back!

skibum69 08-16-2006 9:51 AM

Interesting, I didn't hear VW was pulling the TDIs. I did hear Audi was bringing them over starting sometime in 2007.

hyperlite7572 08-16-2006 11:14 AM

Session has a deisel engine don't they. What kind of engine is that?

ferrarispider95 08-16-2006 11:33 AM

The only reason the TDI's are getting pulled is because they don't meet the new emission standards. However they will be back. Mercedes is the only car that would be diesel for 2007 in the US, with the E320 CDI.

I own a tdi and they are great engines that last forever with proper maintenance.

The emission standards are very different for boats, so I dont think it would be a problem to have these over here.

ferrarispider95 08-16-2006 11:38 AM

The 3 liter engine will be plenty, unless you get a real big boat. Horsepower is not the # you want in a wakeboard boat, Torque does the work.

doubleup10 08-16-2006 12:13 PM

Isn't Indmar tied in with Chevrolet? Couldn't they market an Indmar Duramax, with ~650 lb/ft of torque?

rocketman 08-16-2006 12:46 PM

Steven,

I believe that Session uses one from Yanmar. I understand it is made by BMW. Somebody here on WW had put one into theor 2004 x-star. That is my dream boat there with that slight modification.

This one has a few more than 650 ft/lbs...

This is one of two twin turbo D-maxs in a skater.

Should have a government health warning on it.You’ll get dermatitis filling it up and cancer skiing behind it.
Diesels for tractors and trucks
