I test drove one and there great rigs-just get it with the hemi and you'll be set to tow anything.

The HEMI tows awesome. The only time you'll know your boat is behind you is when you put on the brakes. If you want one I'll sell them. I'll get you a WakeWorld discount.

It's not very different from the Grand Cherokee They're very similar in many respects with the Commander having a bit more interior space and the 3rd row. With all respect to JeremyOG, I don't see paying the extra money (and gasoline) for the HEMI. The 4.7L does an admirable job towing on the GC. My cousin uses his GC to tow his Sport Nautique and you rarely notice it back there. I imagine the Commander will do a comparable job towing with that engine.

Personally, I wish they'd offer the Commander with the almighty 4.0L inline 6 but they don't put that on anything but the Wrangler anymore and it's going to be phased out all together soon from what I hear. The only 6 option on the Commander is the less than impressive 3.7L with the cheap rear end that couldn't tow my grandma in her wheelchair (not that I've tried).

When I can get a 2 or 3 year old used Commander, I'll probably be trading in my Cherokee (XJ) for it. I think it's a pretty sweet ride.

Dante-the Hemi is minimal upgrade in $$$ plus the fuel savings between the hemi and 4.7 is 1-2 mpg at best. The 4.7 gives its best power in the top range and likes to be reved, your probably burning more gas towing then with the Hemi which has alot more low end torque. Will both do the job, yes, but the Hemi will do it better.

The HEMI by itself is a minimal upgrade but from everything I've read it requires the Limited package. I looked up the price difference between standard and Limited. The MSRP is about $6000 or $7000 higher for the Limited. It all depends on which features are important. From what I've seen the standard package is already pretty stacked. It's not like the old days when a CJ-5 passenger seat was an option. I'll give you that you're only saving 1 or 2 MPGs on the 4.7L. I was thinking it was higher but turns out I was comparing the V-6 vs V-8. Now if I'm wrong and you can get the HEMI on the standard package for as cheap as you can on the Limited, I'd add it as an option.

i was quoted about $40K for a limited with the hemi and pretty much every option available. i was interested until i saw one up close. they're just not big enough for me.

I'd look at jeepwarehouse.com. They're a no haggle site that'll let you look up their price on-line. Their price is usually pretty decent. I use them as a baseline for what to walk away from at the dealership. It's worth noting that I'm NOT affiliated with the site or dealership. It's just a tip I picked up reading the Jeep newsgroup.

(Message edited by hal2814 on February 27, 2006)

I have an '05 GC Limited with the Hemi. It tows like crazy and the mileage isn't much different the 4.7L. The upgrade does only come with the Limited. Since the Commander is simply a stretched GC with a little more weight, I would imagine it does about the same. I got mine through my wife's job at 1% below Invoice and any rebates. We got everything but Nav and back up assist. I would get the Nav if I had the chance again.
