50mm1.8 = $100 = will be one of your favorite lenses

cali_rider 08-27-2008 3:13 PM

What camera did you use to shoot these?

sidekicknicholas 08-27-2008 3:27 PM

a d40

cbk 08-27-2008 6:17 PM

Nick - Were you shooting in auto or manual setting?

I have the same lens and I just can't seem to get mine that crisp...I am mainly using the auto mode on a EOS Rebel XT

sidekicknicholas 08-27-2008 6:38 PM

I was in shooting manual ... Ap setting with it all the way open....it was super bright which helped

richd 08-27-2008 8:23 PM

Looks like your in cam sharpening is cranked up pretty good as well (which is fine)

heeb_v215 08-27-2008 9:05 PM

Nick you were using a Nikon D40? and is that lens VR.or not necc. Thanks

sidekicknicholas 08-27-2008 9:32 PM

Yup Nikon d40....

the lens has no VR... it might be nice to have but on that day it was so bright it wouldn't have mattered

heeb_v215 08-27-2008 9:48 PM

Cool Thanks

richd 08-28-2008 8:14 PM

Tamron just put VR/IS on one of those super zooms by the way.

I like Tamron lenses, when you get a good one like Nick did they can be spectacular.

Awesome! I have that same lens and it's pretty funny, I always go back to it cause it takes great pics!

As far as other lenses, I second Umali go for the 50 mm 1.8 I just shot with my buddies and I am gonna go pick one up this weekend!

goinbigg17 08-29-2008 3:12 PM

Nice pics with the new lens!

Sorry for the mini hi-jack......whats the deal with this 50mm 1.8 lens? I certainly like the price tag I see at B&H

Just a good all around lens for everyday purpose? Or is it primarily portrait that it's good for?

richd 08-30-2008 11:00 AM

It's a fast prime lens with unusually good IQ given it's cost. I use mine for indoor shooting usually holidays where I can get by with room light and no flash. It's a good portrait lens on a 1.6X crop body given the "magnification" effect of the sensor crop.
