So whats your take on them. What are you running them with and how do they compare to their current models i.e. the 450's. I have a line on them with the carbon fiber for a good price.

They were introduced in 2004 or 2005 by Skylon with tons of hype about being amazingling loud and clear. The housings are plastic and metal with simulated carbon fiber stickers.

A buddy bought them and put them on his tower powered by a RF 350w X 2 amplifier. They ended up being a huge dissapointment, my home built compression driver speakers not only sounded significantly better they also were significantly louder. My buddy was furious since he spent about 4x my investment. After spending about 8 weekends with my buddy and his Defcons I cannot remember an entire weekend when all the speaker components were working. Seems that there is at least one tweeter or full range driver out and any given moment. I believe they have been back to the factory at least three times.

Skylon discontinued the Deafcon series, my guess would be because of failures and dissapointing sound. In 2006 with similar fanfare and hype they introduced the Rubicon series. I have another buddy with a two Rubicon 250's and one Rubicon 450 on his MC X45. It's interesting to stand on his platform and hear the music move between the speakers as they cut out and come back on.

If Skylon was the only option I would build my own tower speakers. I think you will find many more satisfied customers running Wetsounds or NVS tower speakers. If you need a part-time job keeping the speakers running go for the Deafcons.

On the positive side they look nice on a Master Craft tower.

Just my opinion.

(Message edited by mikeski on July 30, 2007)

Thanks Mikeski informative as always to be honest I'm pretty happy with my 4 Boss tower speakers ( B-60,B-70)and haven't had a single problem with them. You've made my decision very easy and saved me a little scrilla.

On an aside who the hell is Spektrum audio? That is the speaker that Boss replaced MB Quart with. The only thing I know about them is that their a German company.

Your right they do look nice on the tower but I'm going for more than looks.

Actually, if you put a good amp behind the Defcon's, they sound awesome. I was powering mine with a RockfordFosgate T5002. We ride on a 3000ft private lake, and you can hear any song very clearly when the boat is at the other side of the lake, not to mention they sound awesome while you're riding. I actually hated selling mine with the boat, but they're part of the reason I got it to sell so fast. Just my $.02 from actually owning them...

the skylon deafcons are pretty cool imo..

there are different versions out there with different crossovers and drivers... the early models were the best (image dynamic crossovers and drivers) on some of the later ones, skylon cut corners..

the mounting system is still the best since it can be done by one person and has only 2 bolts (very elegant and functional) and very lightweight..

they were designed around tru amps at a 2 ohm load (drawback in imo..)... hence they do need a lot of clean power but they do "deliver" when setup with a high quality amp and proper head unit voltage..

Hatepain- My friend has a Boss setup with the Spektrum woofers. They sound good but no better then any other middle of the road car audio speaker. The JL tower setup on the newer MC sounds much better IMO. My 1 set of Pro 80s Wetsounds are much much louder and cleaner sounding then the Spektrum setup with half the cost.

I have the deafcon IV's and they sound good but need a ton of power. I am running a Soundstream Tarantula at 350RMS a side and think it is barely enough power.

ive got rubi 450 a fosgate 550x2 and its so loud and clear. i need to power my solobaric square more!

I'm likely going to go to a HLCD set up next year. I tried earlier this year to change out the spektrums with db650's (I wouldn't do this know) and they didn't fit the cans. The Boss cans are huse compared to most 6.5" speaker enclosures. Does anyone know which MB Quart speaker was in these previously?

If I go with a 3 some set up what amp are you guy's using? I would think that it would require alot of power.

acurtis_ttu 08-01-2007 10:06 AM

In my experience the Wetsounds are extremely efficient and take little power to sound great. I’m pretty sure this was one of the design goals. To produce a product that doesn’t’ take loads of power to run. I am running the new alpine pdx 4.150 on my threesome. I switched from the massive P800.4 amp. The alpine is a little underrated. I’ve heard as little as 55 watts to as much as 800 watts on a single pro 80. They sound really good and obviously loud in the whole range. IMO the 150-250 RMS is an optimal range for the pro 80.

I've got a set of defon III's sitting in my garage that will make your ears bleed if you amp them correctly. If someone wants them. Black with chrom on front and back.

hatepain 08-02-2007 9:32 AM

Thanks adam I was thinking that would be a great amp due to it's low power requirments and it's genuine power rating. I also like those because they take up so little space.

Ken, it begs the question why are they sitting in your garage?

knwebs 08-02-2007 9:46 AM

Two reasons: I have a Calabria that has 64 inches to fill (it's a wide big boy) these didn't fill the room (to my liking). The old tower they came off was smaller than my current on and I'd need to order new clamps (lazy). So I had a fab shop custom make some for me that look similiar to the Roswell's that are on Supra but I added an extra can. I put four lights integrated into the mix so I wouldn't have to mess with that issues. I have about $2200 in my creation but love it.... If anyone's interested in the pics email me and I'll provide.
