Painting or wrapping boards

So i did some searches for painted boards, and found a few things but no definitive thread.

I have a Slingshot Hooke, I love the board!!!, i love the bottom!!, but very much dislike the top graphics. I bought the board for form over function, but was thinking of experimenting with the top of the board a bit.

awesome!!!!

I dont want to add a ton of weight to the board so not sure if painting or wrapping would be better. Also not sure which will behave the best best with flex. Going to leave the bottom as is, just want to do the top.

What kind of paint / vinyl should i use?

Please post some pics of you designs and advice. I definitely like things simple and clean, still think Ronix has best graphics in the biz.

wrap it.. painting adds weight..

Corey from Texas had some success painting a board but I believe he works in auto body.. I'd just wrap the top half.. Then you're only out $20 in vinyl if it gets chipped.

Was also thinking about black plasti-dip, which is very reversible but not sure about durability, but heck people use it on their car wheels so...

Derek Grasman would always post up pictures of his custom painted boards on his blog... email him through his site and see what he used to do it

I checked out http://derekgrasman.wordpress.com and didnt see much

sidekicknicholas 08-24-2011 10:49 AM

Its been a while since I've seen one, may have to dig to old old entrys

liquiddiet 08-24-2011 10:56 AM

yea i went through them all back to 2008 LOL, and found 2. I might pick up some vinyl and test some ideas

ive painted two boards. both liquid force. i painted one a metallic yellow and another plum. i used spray cans for both. one i cleared, one i didnt.
the biggest issue is weight and durability. the board gets VERY heavy painting. adds several pounds. it takes 1-2 cans. and if you hold two cans of spray paint in your hand thats the amount of weight your adding (minus the thin can weight obviously). if i remember right it was around 2 extra pounds.
the other is durability. we dont rail ride. but the paint gets scratched. mostly on the fins and center from putting the board on, on the swim deck, and the board racks too.
wraping would be easier but also add some weight. vinyl is actually pretty heavy (i own a 24" roland vinyl cutter as well so im very familiar)

here is the second one i did. i THINK this is the one i didnt clear. painted with krylon

Thanks Cory i actually saw your post with that board, that looks great for a rattle can. Which do you think is heavier vinyl or paint? I'm only doing the top too.

stang_killa_ss 08-24-2011 12:28 PM

i only did the bottom. i would say paint probly just squeaks out vinyl as being heavier. ironically the higher quality the vinyl, the thinner it actually is.

Any recommendations on the vinyl to get? and where to get a 2'x5' sheet?

sidekicknicholas 08-24-2011 1:15 PM

ebay

stang_killa_ss 08-24-2011 3:16 PM

ebay or your local sign shop. just get some good 8-9 year vinyl. it will be much thinner and more plyable than cheap 3-5 year vinyl
we buy avery. the number after the "A" designates the year it will last. on ebay they seem to mostly be sellign the A4xxxx. which is cheap thick 4 year calendar vinyl

liquiddiet 10-27-2011 12:32 PM

I cant seem to find any A9 vinyl, anyone know where i can pick up some?

use paint to stencil out the parts you dont like. A big nautique logo here, a big Jetpilot logo there, covers up what ya dont like

i did this to my ronix one, and looks alot better than it did before

liquiddiet 10-27-2011 12:44 PM

nah i'm thinking matte black stealth, maybe a slingy decal thats it

simplej 10-27-2011 12:46 PM

youd be surprised what a good sticker/stencil job will do

liquiddiet 10-27-2011 1:00 PM

i agree a big black stick to cover everything :)

simplej 10-27-2011 6:43 PM

no like rasta mon?

I actually used plasti-dip so it is totally reversible and lightweight. I am still going to put a coat of satin clear coat for some durability. But it looks great so far, i have a few slingshot decals i may strategically place but not sure yet.

newwhit 12-21-2011 8:44 AM

looks sick! add a SS decal!

eubanks01 12-21-2011 10:56 AM

That's awesome! How did you use that stuff? Is it a spray? How do you get it even and not cover up your binding track or fin holes?
