just bought a 04 substance 142 and wanted to know if it was the right size. ive heard of smaller guys using bigger boards before, im 5'9" and about 160

You could go either way 138 or 142. I'm 6'0 and 160 and ride a 138.... I was thinking of going bigger. Wanna trade? Mines a '04 substance 138
