Hey guys,

I asked about the commander before, but now I
want to know about Grand Cherokee.

How do they tow/do they tow?

Recommendations and such...

Thanks in advance!

Danny T.

I tried towing a Moomba Mobius with my old Grand Cherokee and did not like doing it all. It felt like the boat was over powering the Cherokee. The boat and trailer weighed around 4500 LBS. The trailer was a tandom axle with surge brakes. Hope this helps.

I far as I have read the commander and the Grand Cherokee are the same ride. The commander is just a little bit bigger interior wise. My buddy just picked up his commander tonight. He loves it. I imagine that either will tow the hell out of a boat.

I haven't gotten a very good look at the commander, but I think the JGC is a really slick looking ride. As far as I can tell they cost pretty much the same too.

I have a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited and I presently tow a 190 Fourwinns. I have a 4.7 liter V8. I have no trouble at all pulling my boat and we usually pull it about 300 miles round trip to our favorite lake. My gas mileage doesn't do very well though. I get about 200 miles on a full tank while towing and about 325 on average while not towing. I do have the towing package on the jeep. Hope this helps.

The 4.7 will do fine. But if you can get the 5.7...Not only is it cool to have a HEMI but it will also tow whatever you need.

My friend pulled our X-2 with a 4.7L Grand Cherokee easily. Around 80 trips without any problems.

I agree with getting the HEMI

Of course it will pull it down the road, but I would be a little worried about the tranny.

I have a 2005 Grand cherokee all-time 4x4 and i love it. The new grands and comanders have the same frame just the interior space in the commander is larger. My grand has the 4.7L V8 and it drives like it wants to tear up the road and grips well. Plenty of power. My dad just bought a new Commander witht the HEMI and he says it hauls a$$. You should have no problem on either choice. Good Luck

There's really no difference between the current-generation GC and Commander except for the Commander's third row and slightly larger interior and the styling. Personally, I think the GC gets uglier with every passing year but I realize that a lot of people think it looks pretty sweet. While Attila may be overly worried about the transmission (the GC has had some severe transmission problems in the past but those days are over), the transmission on a GC (and therefore probably a Commander) won't last forever. Take care of it and you'll probably get 150K out of it. Really take care of it and it'll probably last longer. Since the Commander is new, if you like the look and feel of the GC and can live with the slightly smaller interior space and lack of a 3rd row, you can probably get a better deal on the GC. Personally, unless either the new Wrangler or upcoming Patriot really impresses me (and manage to garner a decent tow rating), I'm going to wait a year or two and get a used Commander.

I used to own a 2001 Grand Cherokee Limited with the V8... It towed my boat absolutely fine... It stopped the boat fine as well... However with that particular year of GC, Jeep didn't install the big brakes on it therefore the Jeep brakes got hot over time pulling a boat. About once a year I had to have the rotors turned becauase they would warp and cause a wobbly feeling. This being said after turning my rotors 3 times I finally bought heavy duty rotors for high heat and larger brakes for the Jeep and it was great after that. Didn't do too bad on Gas mileage either. Not a bad tow vehicle overall. Not a great one either! Now I tow with my 03 Chevy Silverado and its a lot better for stopping and handling. But the Jeep is very capable.

This may help...I have a Jeep Liberty and tow a Moomba Kamberra with it, weighs 4000 with the trailer. It has a 3.7 liter V6 and does fine. I live in Ohio so no hills to battle with. I did replace the transmission last year before I bought the boat, but have had no problems since. (hope none in the future- but I snowboard and use the Jeep like it should be use) The trailer is tandem axle with brake assist. I just got into wakeboarding last year, and would have purchased a larger SUV if I had known I would be buying a boat. But - if your Jeep is going to have a 4.7 liter - you should have no problems...
I did install a tow package on the jeep with the largest cooling system for the tranny - a must!

I have a 04’ Grand Cherokee with the 4.7 HO motor. I had a Timbren kit installed for less then $300. The Jeep tows better then the 00”Durango I owned previously.

http://www.timbren.com/
I have a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with towing package and Hemi 5.7L. With the full time 4wd it tows our Mobius LSV like its not even there. Really solid feel. We used to tow with a 2002 Ford Explorer 6 cyl, rear wheel drive and you had to be really careful because it felt like the boat was controlling the car. The only thing I notice with our Jeep is you lose about 2mpg when towing.
