Dyeing fins

Hey guys think I could dye my future fins? My board looks kinda plain, i think dyeing the fins would be sick and give it a little extra "cool factor"

Im pretty sure they are the natural composite? They are just white. If it got some dye, the craft dye you would use to tie dye, mixed it with water and heat it up a little, and dipped the fins in it, would it work? Would they hold the dye? and would it hurt the fin to be heat up a little?

Cool idea! The Natural Composite fins are plastic as opposed to fiberglass. Plastic can be dyed with that Rit Dye intended for fabric, but I would be concerned with the heat. My guess is that it WON'T deform your fins, but I'd test it on a cheap crappy fin first, if you have one lying around.

Have you thought about spray paint? DJ James had some fins that he used dayglo spray paint on.

Ive been hunting for red RIT dye the past hour, seems that no one carries it haha. Im thinkin im gonna do what this guy did, http://www2.swaylocks.com/forums/dyeingcoloring-fins-0

Basically just use hot tap water, that way it wont be too hot, and then ill leave the bucket outside for a little while, im in AZ so itll be pretty warm, and let it soak for an hour or so. I dont have any other fins around, besides a set of Liquid Force 2.0 that arent plastic so it wouldnt be the same effect.

Ill look into the paint, but I really think the dye will look the best, the black future logo will still show so itll almost look like they were supposed to be red.

Yeah - I did that Rit Dye on some balsa also, it's not very vivid, but the balsa sucks the dye solution well. I posted a picture of the results somewhere here on WW. The logo showing through the translucent color would be killer.

I think I might just go for it this weekend, Ill most likely be switching out the fins soon anyways. Just from what ive heard, Any particular fin you recommend? Im on an elevation (takin it out for the first time in about 30 minutes)

Planning on getting some Red Decals for the bottom, and with the red fins the white board will look way sick.

That will be a killer color combination. I've never ridden the elevation, but in that thread everyone seems to dicth the stocks fins and drop the $100 or so bucks on the Black Stixx 2.0 in the F4 template and the 340 quad rears. Give Duffy a shout, he's a Flo Team rider for SS and seems to have their ear, I'm sure he can tell you what the best combo to buy is.

That is a tough question. I do like the black stixx 2.0. I got a used set off ebay for $35! I ride the stock rears.

So the board is bad ass and love it beyond all belief. My airs on the first day riding it kick the airs on my old boards ass! so awesome, this boards wicked fast. I feel like i need a little more release tho, witch fins should i replace? the fronts? Ill look into some new fins.

Jeff, It looks like im gonna be getting the dye tomorrow and trying this, unless I can get the prop fixed tomorrow morning in time to get to the lake before it gets crowded. hit something today and messed up 2 of the blades.

I sanded them down with 240 grit and they are sitting in the dye right now! Couldnt keep the black futures logo like I wanted but its no biggie. Ended up going with blue, was afraid the red would turn out pink!

Sweet! You'll have to post up how long you leave the fins in the dye and what the final outcome looks like.

ilikebeaverandboats 06-05-2010 5:41 PM

Will do, Ill get pics on here and then might do a little write up.

That looks nice man!

How long did you let them soak in the dye for?

ilikebeaverandboats 06-06-2010 1:12 PM

Thanks! That was about 2 hours, lets them sit for an hour, then checked em and flipped em and let them sit for an hour again.

scottnaz 06-06-2010 1:17 PM

Cool idea Joey, adds a nice touch to the board

ilikebeaverandboats 06-06-2010 1:51 PM
