any body putting big wheels on the trailers. are modifications needed
|
Mike: There are several thread here about 20's and even a few 22's on trailers, and the general consencus is that it is not recommended.
the reasons for this include:
1. Most 20" tires are not rated for the weight, and even if they are, they are not specifically made for trailering.
2. Ride. If you use the small sidewall, low profile type of tire, the boat will receive a harsher ride on rough roads
3. Wheel rating. Most wheels would be rated for enough wieght, but check for sure.

Someone had a link to an article about the construction of trailer tires and how they differ from auto tires. There was a lot of difference.

That said, if I were not going to tow very far, it would bother me to use bigger tires. I think Extreme trailers even offers 20" wheels as an option, but I may be wrong, it may just be 18's.

I just drove up to Portland from Sacramento(600miles) towing a Calabria Pro-V w/ 22" wheels on trailer. Drove smooth and no problems. But like John stated check all weight ratings on rim & tire.

my trailer ride's very smooth. its probably a combination of the suspension, the trialer make and the wheels that make the ride. best trailer ive had yet.

EZ Loader has the 20" as an option, we have had very few problems and they raise the whole trailer up enough that it dosen't require a huge drop hitch for my lifted truck. Tows like a dream.

Have 20's on my EZ Loader Illusion - they ride nice! Check profile pic...
|
Are you guys sure that those are 20's, they look an awful lot like 18s to me.
|
have the same trailer. they are 20's that the new nautiques come on.(ez loader illusion) I didn't think they would be good but mine ride great.
|
So are they still rated as a trailer tire, if so are they hard to find till everybody's doing it? I will say they all look VERY nice and pimp'n is the way to go!
|
Those are 20's alright. The picture is deceiving because I took it from a distance. The 20's make the boat sit to high up. I'm 5'10" and I can't see inside the boat.
|
I just got some new trailers with 18s and they do not look any smaller. I suppose because the wheel wells are traditional size.
