- - one JL 12W7, or two JL12W3s? (http://www.wakeworld.com/forum/showthread.php?t=679849)

trickyboarder08 03-20-2009 6:55 AM

If you had to choose between one JL 12W7, or two JL12W3s what would you decide and why? Also would you recommend any other types of subs. These are going in a custom box that I will make to fit under the back seat. Also would it be better to have these subs firing down into the floor or up into the seat? Thanks in advance.

05mobiuslsv 03-20-2009 7:08 AM

How many watts rms do you have to power the sub/subs?

With a mounting depth of 9.5 inches I doubt you will be able to get the W7 under your seat unless it's over 14" off the floor.

(Message edited by 05mobiuslsv on March 20, 2009)

ponyh8r 03-20-2009 7:16 AM

x2 NuBu,

You probably won't have the room for the W7. The W7 firing down or up in this application is probably no bueno.

Sorry, to answer your question straight up, I would rather have one W7 than two W3's. Also remember, the W7 will have to run at 3 Ohms while the W3's are good at 4 or 8. The reason I mention this is that many amps aren't 3 Ohm stable.

trickyboarder08 03-20-2009 7:17 AM

The amps arent bought yet, so I will buy the amp to match the sub/s that I get. I am doing away with my current backseat and makeing a new one, so I am pretty much open on space. I am going to start with the sub and build everything else to match. The way I see it, is I will be able to build a back seat with the subs in the middle, my battery bank, and amp. However, JLW3's do seem a little more realistic. But, assuming I can get everything to work, which setup do you think I would be more pleased with?

05mobiuslsv 03-20-2009 7:21 AM

If you can give it at least 1000 watts rms the W7, which means you'll have to get the JL 1000/1 to push it, or an amp that has high ratings at 4 ohms to give you the power you need at 3 ohms.

The W3's will sound good especially if you could do a ported box with them.

For reference I run 2 12w6v2's in my boat off of a JL 1000/1 and I like it.

(Message edited by 05mobiuslsv on March 20, 2009)

trickyboarder08 03-20-2009 7:22 AM

Thanks Mike, I had a feeling I would be more pleased with a single W7, but don't think that two W3's would make me unhappy either.

trickyboarder08 03-20-2009 7:25 AM

If I went with the W7 it would definitely be coupled with the JL 1000/1 and ported would be an option also.

ponyh8r 03-20-2009 7:34 AM

Brandon,

I run a JL 12W7 in my boat on a JL 1000/1. To be honest, sometimes it is a little too much. I turn it down a lot of the times. In my X-star it rattles the seats and the side panels. Sometimes it even pushes up my cup holders. The good thing though is that they are so clean sounding and deep. You never get that tinny sound that some subs give. In my Tahoe, I have two JL10W3's running off a 500/1. It is nice, but does not compare to the boat. These are only 10's though, I have never heard to 12W3's. Both setups have ported boxes. The W3's are more than enough for the Tahoe, but the sound is just not as good.

trickyboarder08 03-20-2009 7:43 AM

Thanks Mike, I think I will go with the two W3's just because of price and it's a little more realistic, and should make a a little cleaner install.

chucktronics 03-20-2009 7:54 AM

Brandon,

I would base what subs to use off of what type of music you listen to. Because you mentioned ported this comes to play: when wanting a flat alignment for all types of music the multiple cone area is very helpful.the front wave of the cone is all of your musical notes if you will while your port is the amplified back wave at a desired frequency.

basically ,if you listen to allot of low end music (rap r&b ) its a no brainer, a single sub with good linear excursion can out perform 2 subs with less. The only place sound is lost is when the notes are higher than roughly the 50hrz range.

I would probably base the layout more upon room and the ability to let the drivers breath to the open environment. you can always correct the sound with enclosure tuning

wakebrdr38 03-20-2009 10:35 AM

Ive got a 10" jlw3 in sealed box in my jeep. Even in a sealed box it would be way too big to fit under the rear seat in the older nautiques. Your best bet is to do a ported box up in the front in the closed bow area. You could fit a w7 there but imo would be wayyy too much. The closed bow will magnify the base. I would do a ported 12w3 up front. I had a cheap 10" sub in front of the passenger seat that fired toward the driver and had the port go forward into the bow, and it was AWESOME! You could hear the bass loud and clear everywhere (including when the boat would turn around to pick you up if it was a calm day). I took everything out though end of last season because I was tired of losing storage space. Also, from all my experience with older nautiques, the boat tends to get very wet due to all the fat sacs and this especially is true with the rear seat area. You need a water proof box and a water proof sub for that area.

hatepain 03-20-2009 10:50 AM

Anyone ever do one ported sub and one sealed?

chucktronics 03-20-2009 11:22 AM

Agree with kevin,
make sure you can get the sound out from under the bow

Hate,

The problem with two different enclosures is the cancellation of frequencies between at different locations, might sound good in the center of boat ,however not around / behind boat.

hatepain 03-20-2009 11:46 AM

Cool thanks Ryan. I'm interested in the passive radiator idea, it sounds like you can use a typical sealed enclosure sized box but get more lump. Does the radiator have to be matched to the speaker i.e. brand and such?

trickyboarder08 03-20-2009 1:39 PM

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passive_radiator_(speaker)

wakebrdr38 03-20-2009 1:49 PM

My theory when I built my box was that porting the sounds forward to the tip would then bounce the waves back, magnifying them like a megaphone and filling the boat with sound. It did just that! My box was really big though and the port was a 8-10 inches off the floor. I modeled it off of a klipche home theatre sub box i have. Port placement seems to be key in filling the boat with sound. In a home theater you have to move the port closer or further away from a wall until the sound fills the room without any dead spots. I still had storage in front of it, but when life jackets piled as high as the port it didnt sound as good. It worked best when it had a good 4-5 feet open space in front of the port in order to reflect the sound back. Thats just my experiences though, hope this helps

hehateme 03-20-2009 8:50 PM

I have one 12W7 in a ported box with a JL HD 750/1. Its too much.

chucktronics 03-20-2009 10:40 PM

Passive radiator?

They have their place and application. they do give you a little more noise than single sealed on its own, acting like a second driver, along the lines of the port in a single reflex box. however most of the benefit is to reduce (optimally eliminate any chance of standing/canceling waves). typically the passive radiator has some adjustment to meet the response of the actual powered woofer, thus using the same brand is recommended. Boston Acoustics makes an outstanding adjustable radiator package for the 12v industry . Although this is not my recommendation for the boat and marine side of things,it is great setup as a whole

Port location?

you must first consider the environment to which the port is firing to determine proper alignment ,port tuning and compression chamber size,

imagine a bandpass box................ you are creating a ported box within another box(bow)that has another port( opening to fresh air). this changes all calculations for tuning etc.As mentioned by kevin loading is crucial for the sub and port as long as it is not choking the output.

Overall :tune you ported enclosure higher for a closed bow.....lol

brucemac 03-20-2009 11:09 PM

+1 W7 if it fits and works

for sure if it does

not sure i'd do 1 or 2 dub3's if i couldn't

even 3v3's

biggris79 03-21-2009 4:29 AM

I have a boston acoustic gt28 on my w7 u can get a good price on this amp at wooferetc.com it has plenty of power for the w7 just make sure u have a big enough box for it.

wakebrdr38 03-21-2009 8:06 AM

All that being said by Ryan, yeah i got lucky on everything to have it work right the first try with no calculatiions. What about a 10 w7?

canecorso 03-21-2009 9:19 AM

i am having the same issue I just bought a jl 1000/1 amp which sub is best to go with 10w7 or 12w7. Is it best to go in a sealed or ported enclosure? Im putting it into a 08 x2

ncboarderboy 03-21-2009 9:07 PM

Anyone ever tried this sub? will the variable q thing actually work to allow it to sound good in small encloseres?http://www.infinitysystems.com/car/products/product_detail.aspx?prod=KAPPA%20PERFECT10DVQ& cat=SUB&ser=KPE&Language=ENG&Country=U S&Region=USA

chucktronics 03-21-2009 10:44 PM

ported enclosures are going to have more extension on the specified band width.
12w7 or 10w7 ,the choice is completely dependent on what size the enclosure can be, or height physical restraints.I prefer multiple 10 " drivers rather than 12's because of the quicker response, however it is all personal taste (assuming the woofers are in their proper size enclosures)

you will always get more volume out of a woofer in a larger box than a woofer in too small of box

882001 03-22-2009 2:53 PM

here is what i did in my 2001. the closed bow works as a big folded horn. and absolutly slams! space is too much of a premium in those boats to do what your talkin bout. i would use an L5 or L7. over jl just for shear output. never heard an w7 but unimpressed with the w3's and w6's i have heard.
http://www.correctcraftboats.com/pnuploads/resize_of_dsc00902.jpg

ponyh8r 03-22-2009 3:15 PM

882001,

That is a great install. I agree with the W3 or W6, but the W7 sounds NOTHING like the others. In fact, the W7 is not much of an SPL sub, but the Sound Quality is very unique and satisfying. The bass is so so tight in a properly boxed W7 application.

aces6692 03-22-2009 7:26 PM

personally, i like a lottt of bass, ive heard one W7 and ive heard 2 W3's. but my fav was still 2 12W6's. the bass was sooo loud, but not overpowering. that would be my choice of subs. Good Luck!

canecorso 03-23-2009 4:26 PM

Anyone have a w7 in there boat?

ponyh8r 03-23-2009 5:36 PM

Yes RG, I have one, why?

canecorso 03-23-2009 6:35 PM

is it too much? what size, how many? what amp are you using to power?

is it better too stay with marine grade (In your opinion?)

just trying too determine which ave i take

ponyh8r 03-23-2009 6:41 PM

I have had types of subs in my boat. It is an 06 Xstar. My last two subs have been W7s. I had a 10 and moved up to a 12W7. I have a JL1000/1 powering the sub right now. I have never used marine grade subs in my boats and have never had a problem. If you use non marine grade equipment ensure that you seal the box with fiberglass or line X to ensure the wood does not soak up moisture. Also mount the amps where they are least likely to get wet. The sub absolutely pounds and I think it sounds great without being too much. I also have two JL marine 10's mounted in the seat bases. They run free air and you can't even hardly hear them when the W7 is thumping. It is not too much.

canecorso 03-23-2009 7:02 PM

Sweet I love to hear it. I contacted a local audio shop today and the guy was saying you better not try to put a w7 in that boat 2008x2. He was saying it will be too much and will blow my altinator due to having a 1000/1 amp. I just bought the amp last fri since I got a killer deal and this dude was trying to tell me to sell it since it draws 100A im like what. Hes like your gonna be stuck on the water lol. ARe you familiar what the amperage output is on the MC altinators?

The boat comes stock with 2 car batteries, however I think i will need to upgrade to include a optima battery. How much room do you need for a 12w7? What is best ported or sealed? Do you have any photos?

Im use to hard bass as I have a 15" orion hcca love it but it was in a car and is too big for my boat. Do you get alot of bad vibrations from it?

Thx

themxercr85 03-23-2009 10:38 PM

1 dub7 would smack 2 dub treys man. But IMO, not trying to start a war or anything, but Image dynamics again IMO hit pretty dam hard for the doe you spend. You can get an IDQ which we have in our x-star for I think $240 on woofersetc.com and it slams dude. And I think an IDMAX is a little under 400 smackers which is the image dynamics w7 competition. Just my .02, dub7's are still good subs just way over priced to me.

2006maliblue 03-23-2009 10:53 PM

Heck go all out throw a pair of Critical Mass UL12's in there!

biggris79 03-24-2009 1:50 AM

I have a jl 12w7 in a 220 nautique and im running a boston gt28 amp on it these amps are made to run at 12.6v

canecorso 03-24-2009 5:07 PM

what robert? makes no sense?

05mobiuslsv 03-24-2009 5:22 PM

rG I will translate for you. He has a JL Audio 12w7 in his Correct Craft Nautique 220 that he is powering with a Boston Acoustics GT-28 amplifier. The Boston Acoustics amplifier is rated at 12.6 volts.

rG just go buy the damn W7 already and quit waiting for someone to try and talk you out of it.

canecorso 03-24-2009 6:43 PM

Its all good, I have a JL 1000/1 that runs on 11 to 14.4V. How does that boston do power wise with the w7?

Nu-I aint looking for anyone to talk me out of it just curious what all say since I have a few weeks before I start the install and want to make sure I make the right decision...
I love Mikes commit, the 12w7 its like a "blow horn" when the thing gets moving... I just hope if I get it the boat doesnt fall apart

Nu are you gonna step up to the real deal (w7 that is)? lol jk

(Message edited by canecorso on March 24, 2009)

wake1823 03-24-2009 7:44 PM

those jl 1000/1's will zap your batts at loud volume (assuming motor off), they have regulated power supplies....as voltage begins to drop the current draw goes thru the roof.

Your stock alt is proabby 105/90 amp.

canecorso 03-25-2009 5:42 AM

so what get some optima's? how many will one need to run it off for a little while like 20 min?

kickflip_mj 03-25-2009 10:26 AM

i have 2 W3v2 in my truck but for the boat i would go with the W7 and the 1000/1 amp... its a match made in heaven

spolk69 03-25-2009 11:19 AM

I HAD A 12 W7 WITH 1000 WATT IN LAST BOAT IT WAS AWSOME
NOW I AM RUNNING WETSOUNDS XXX12 WITH 1000WATT AMP AND IT SOUNDS JUST AS GOOD...

ponyh8r 03-25-2009 11:28 AM

Shawn,

I have heard both and don't think that the Wetsounds sounds anything like a 12W7. That is just my opinion.

canecorso 03-25-2009 3:55 PM

the wetsounds xxx compares up to JLw7 really?? thats a significant price difference if this is indeed true?

ponyh8r 03-26-2009 6:32 AM

RG,

Check out Kinetik batteries. You could get a 2200 and run a 1000/1 for a good long time. I run a 1000/1, 450/4, 2 300/2's and a 300/4 and I have 3 Kinetik 2400's. I also use an onboard charger that I just plug in everytime I take the boat to storage so the boat is charged up when I take it out. It might be worth the investment, like $100 or so. Not too bad. the Wetsounds just does not compare. They do hit hard, but SOUND wise, are nothing like a Dub 7.

wetsounds1 03-26-2009 8:05 AM

Mike,

What enclosure and power did you hear the XS-XXX?

Just curious. I added a diagram to our site of the spl box we built for my boat. This is the box that the XXX likes. The woofer will perform well in a sealed but likes the ported. That makes a huge difference.

Tim
Wet Sounds

ponyh8r 03-26-2009 10:34 AM

Tim,

I have heard them in both types of boxes. I couldn't tell you what amps they were running. I will say that the XXX can hit HARD. As you know by now, I am a huge JL fan. I love wetsounds as well and have 2 485's on my tower and a WS420.

From my point of view the W7 series of subs are not SPL subs. I would consider them an SQ sub. There are plenty of subs that will measure a much higher SPL I am sure, maybe even the XXX series when comparably powered and boxed right. I guess my point would be that I have never heard another sub that sounds as "tight" and as responsive as the W7's. I have listened to many subs. My local shop carries Wetsounds, JL, Memphis, Kenwood, DD, RD and some other brands. But IMO the W7 sounds different than all of them. I won't say they always hit as hard, but to me they sound smoother.

I in no way meant to say that the XXX didn't hit as hard or was not a great sub. My apologies if it came across that way. I have a lot of respect for your products as well as your company; especially the way you guys handle customer service.

RG,

Listen to them all and decide for yourself. Many will tell you that in a boat, SQ is not as big as a factor. I personally disagree, depending on how and where it is placed.

wetsounds1 03-26-2009 10:42 AM

Mike,

Cool, thanks for the feedback. No worries at all. Just like to hear all types of feedback. Sound is so subjective for everyone. So you are 100% correct, listen to them all and see what you like.

Tim
Wet Sounds

xaggie 03-28-2009 11:52 AM

Im running a 13W7 with a 1000/1 and love it in my Star. Although I love the JL Slash amps I think it would sound even better with more wattage thrown at it. Thats in addition to 2 10W6v2's. It's good enough for the girls I go out with.

muckinaround 03-28-2009 10:15 PM

Ever heard Digital Design subs? I'll put them against any brand out there. I've got two 2500 series 12's in my boat and they BEAT like none other in the right box with decent power. I've put them in tons of different applications and have never been disappointed.

(Message edited by muckinaround on March 28, 2009)
