Very cool. I wish you could shop out the green ballon to add a little bit more mistery to the shot. Nice work! Lighting? <BR> <BR>(Message edited by eubanks01 on September 26, 2008)

awesome.

joshturner 09-26-2008 4:18 PM

The lighting was just two sb-800's on pocket wizards at 1/8th power. they are located on each side of the subject. just basic cross lighting

cbk 09-26-2008 8:16 PM

very cool shot.

walt. <BR>Basically i started by filling 50 water balloons. I shot it at night for the sake of having the dark background. i used two SB's, cross lighting the subject. They were set at 1/8 power which i think is about 1/10,000 of a second. The lighting essentially became the shutter speed. from there it was just a matter of popping the balloon and getting the timing. shutter was at 1/250, iso 100, f/4 maybe f/5 i dont remember and dont feel like lookin it up. <BR>i went through 50 balloons ending up with about 5 keepers and that one was the best of the bunch as far as keeping the ball shape of the water. unfortunatly the balloon is still visible in the bottom corner.

Walt 09-27-2008 8:07 PM

Well it sound like you had to earn it but it's a great shot. I'm sure you guys had fun trying to make it work. <BR> <BR>How did you come up with the idea ?

joshturner 09-27-2008 8:52 PM

Well basically i had a project for school where we had to exagerate speed and swiftness. where the the natural choice would be panning or rear curtain sync type stuff to create speed with motion blur i decided to work around the speed or a capture. to freeze something that normally cannot be seen i felt that accomplished the same thing. i have seen high speed videos that are shot at like 2000 fps and so i knew that water essentially holds its shape for a split second before gravity takes over and so i thought maybe i should try to freeze it. then i looked on flickr and seen another person do it, but they used a remote trigger that was sensitive somehow to the popping balloon and so fired when the balloon popped. i didnt have that capability and so i just winged it and got lucky. it took some effort but i think its worth it. its not something typical people shoot or see. i added the element of the person to make it a little bit more mystic in regards to someone acctually controling the water.

Walt 09-27-2008 8:59 PM

Well done ! What kind of grade did you get on it if there was one? The russian judge and WCW give it a A+.

joshturner 09-27-2008 10:41 PM

Yeah the teacher basically was kinda speechless. it was kind of a neat comment to have the instructor ask how i did it. i havent got the actual grade yet but he did make the effort to single me out in the class after showing everyones photos and give it praise. i think that might qualify. either way its just hard work paid off. thanks for your kind words.

steezyshots 09-28-2008 4:41 PM

Walt Nice shots! I'm bummin that i wont be shooting much for another 7 weeks while I'm laid up. All your shots make passing the time in this recliner a lot easier!

thanks a lot man. i got lucky i reckon. i think the human element adds to it as well. most are just the water but having the person in it kind of adds a bit of mystery to it. tells more of a story i think. its random that you came across that after seeing mine.

Walt 10-05-2008 10:15 AM

I like 2 and 3 M13. <BR> <BR>Loren, <BR>Use a tack or needle.

joshturner 10-05-2008 11:49 AM

loren, <BR>its really not anything special. I just used a black hunting knife that the guy holding the balloon poped on the right side of the photo. it was black and he held it flat so that it didnt really show up in the photos. thats it.

helix_rider 10-06-2008 9:28 AM

Cool, I'm going to give this a shot with my wife holding the balloon....she's pregnant and getting bored with the typical week by week belly shot...wanted something new and cool to try.

Golden Gate Rec. area. West/north side of the bridge up on hill

goinbigg17 10-08-2008 2:05 PM

On a hill?

Walt 10-08-2008 2:19 PM

It was obviously shot from the Marin head lands and on a hill. <img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/clipart/lol.gif" border=0> I was looking for the name of the hill. If you have ever hiked it you would remember it. <BR> <BR>My bad. I should of been more specific.

domin8 10-08-2008 3:51 PM

<blockquote><hr size=0><!-quote-!><font size=1><b>quote:</b></font><p>Detour: Slacker Hill <BR> <BR>"A pause between relentless storms this holiday week left Conzelman jammed with traffic half way to Hawk Hill, as visitors crowded the coastal views during a brief moment of patchy sun. Gazing down down at all this from the summit of Slacker Hill, it felt strange-- but good-- to be alone the entire time I was here. This little known peak offered different perspectives of the bridge, the bay, Hawk Hill, and the Headlands, where photographers rarely dare to tread." (b. December 29, 2002) <BR> <BR>Directions: This section is part of the Coastal Trail, from the junction of Conzelman and McCullough to the summit of Slacker Hill. The trailhead begins about 100 feet down McCullough to the right. <BR> <BR>Profile: It begins at around 500 feet, give or take, and climbs to the peak (elev. 840) in 0.4 miles. That's about 16% on average and a few stretches get steeper. Even worse, if you end up being a "slacker," you do so in full view of people riding up the Coastal Trail from Rodeo Valley, and those heading down Conzelman from Hawk Lookout. <BR> <BR>Comment [6]: It's little more than 0.4 miles of misery-- but on a clear sunny day it's worth it for the unique views. Probably would have helped if I knew anything about San Francisco besides that they have a big red bridge. <BR> <BR>Nice pictures though! <BR> <BR>The middle one almost makes the bridge look like a big lego set to me...

Walt 10-08-2008 6:36 PM

Walt 10-09-2008 7:44 PM

1.8 ND. No more waiting around for night time.

dmonte3283 10-10-2008 1:35 PM

Is it possible that when there is a thread like this, that the 'poster' tells us what body/lens/etc he used? I'd be interested to see if I could get similar shots if given a lil more info. The new guys (new photographers) would probably benefit with a little bit direction. <BR>Just a thought???

Walt 10-10-2008 2:42 PM

Monte, <BR>It might be easier if you download <a href="http://www.opanda.com/en/iexif/index.html" target="_blank">http://www.opanda.com/en/iexif/index.html</a> and you can find out most of the information on your own. It won't work on all the photos though.

dmonte3283 10-10-2008 3:28 PM

thanks... I look to this forum b'c of the interest in wake and photography, not necessarily always together, but none the less. always good info, everyone has great feedback.

wakesurf12 10-12-2008 11:07 AM

Shot these on my way to and from Chicago for a job this week. My favorite is the one of the Semi. It's always funny because every time I am in a moving vehicle I start seeing things I want to shoot but most of the time I try to take photos and they never turn out how I want them to. (usually due to the fact that I am traveling down the road at 50+mph) Thankfully I got a few this time. We also stopped to shoot a few along the way at some interesting stops but unfortunately I shot them on the D90 and the RAW software isn't out for that yet (unless someone has information about that.) I will post some video once I get a chance to edit something together as well. Definitely a fun camera. The video feature isn't quite there yet (nor do I think Canon's version is either) but they are definitely on the right track! I think it will still be quite a while before a video feature of a camera determines which body to buy. But it is still fun! <BR> <BR><img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/87667/634945.jpg" alt="Upload"> <BR> <BR><img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/87667/634946.jpg" alt="Upload"> <BR> <BR><img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/87667/634947.jpg" alt="Upload">
