Water proofing an old cover.

I got a cover that needs to make it through one more winter here in NC. Right now with the poles up, I swear it looks like more water runs out of the drain hole than what the cover repels away.

Do most of you just spray scotchgard all over it or is there something better.

What I found with my old cover was that the fabric had become more porous over time and even though the water was beading up on it, it was then seeping in as the beads sat on the cover because the pores had become enlarged. What about using a tarp over it for this winter?

scotchgard should help. what about a more durable sealer? like thin rhino liner or something? it will be heavy but should shed water like a ducks back

found this too. You just have to order site to store.

It depends on how cheap you want to go. I double cover my boat in the winter. The one on the bottom is the custom fitting cover that costs a huge chunk of change and then over the top I put the cheap cover from amazon.com. You can usually find a cover that is somewhat boat shaped for less than you can get a rectangular tarp at the home depot. Less than $100 and you can get two to three winters out of it. It will be baggy and won't have provisions for a tower but I can get it to wrap around the tower stanchions.

Don't use silicone waterproofing spray. In the areas the cover touches the vinyl, the vinyl will get brittle and crack.

I had the same issue with my 10 year old Sharkskin cover. I ended up going with 303 Fabric Guard and it worked very well.

303 works great, but it is a bit pricey for the amount you'll need for a full cover.

Truekaotik 11-16-2015 12:26 PM

Two bottles of 303 should do a 22' boat

jonblarc7 11-16-2015 1:08 PM

Two bottles or two gallons at $100 each???

Truekaotik 11-16-2015 5:18 PM

Two of the spray bottles, I re-coat my cover every year. $20 a bottle retail.

jonblarc7 11-17-2015 6:48 AM

Sounds good I'm going to try that.

303 works great,

NEVER pay full price for something when you can get it from Amazon for cheaper. A gallon jug on Amazon is $30 cheaper going through Overtons and if you are a prime member its free shipping.

I used about 3 quarts from my gallon jug. I put down two light coats on the top of the cover as well as a coat on the underside, targeting the stitching.

...may make it hard cover though.

jonblarc7 05-14-2016 3:39 PM

Hahah I'll pass I found out a company I design for can get me the fabric at cost. So I'll just get a custom one made

jonblarc7 05-14-2016 3:42 PM

It's time anyway and so old I put my thumb through it the other day just putting it on. So it's pretty much dry rotted.
