Hey: I have been intrested in checking out the Boston Sub: What have you compaired it to.

Example 1 12 W7 with 1000 watts in a 1.375 box
and a Boston Sub in the spec box with the recomended watts.

A apples to apples kind of test, any info would be great

truebeachbum 10-21-2007 6:54 PM

i have the 15 comp and the 12 l 7 and its crazy cant wait ta get it on the water. i put in 2 more amps to power the l7 and the wet sounds and it sounds really good.

soundbox 10-22-2007 12:57 PM

Boston SPG555 in 1cub gross will have more volume than a 13w7 and better sound q than a 10w7<----(I feel is the best sounding w7). Weighs less because of the Neo. magnet (much lighter than even a 10w7) and has a replaceable voice coil.

05mobiuslsv 10-22-2007 1:03 PM

So then it's comparable to the w6v2 then (just much more expensive), because the w6 sounds much better than the w7. Not as loud, but much better SQ.

(Message edited by 05mobiuslsv on October 22, 2007)

nu bu - Agreed, W6s do sound better than W7. I was trying to compare W7 vs SPG. Sound Q is I think very close to a W6 with an edge to the SPG because it is able to give so much more impact to faster beats. I don't think that a SPG and even a 13W6 can even be put into the same category only because the output that the SPG is capable of. At a retail of $700 it is the price less than a pair of 2 10w6v2s with more output than a W7 and takes up less space than a pair of 10W6.

Here is a recent install using the SPGs it is the cleanest sounding loud car I've heard in a long time.

That install is insane, I'd love to see the bill for that install.

Total was Aprox. 35k

I looked seriously at the SPG555 before I changed my sub at the beginning of the summer. There are a few inaccuracies in the claims made by soundbox. For pure SPL considerations you need to focus displacement, defined as surface area multiplied by excursion. Exactly as you determine a motor's displacement by bore and stroke.

First look at surface area:
Boston 555 = 555 square centimeters of surface area (Sd)
JL 12W7 = 542 square centimeters

next look at the excursion:
Boston 555 = 2.2cm
JL 12W7 = 2.9cm

The Boston displaces 1221 cubic centimeters of air at Xmax

The JL displaces 1571 cubic centimeters

So, from a purely mechanical standpoint the JLW7 packs a bigger punch than the SPG555.

There are lots of other issues like efficiency, cone weight, suspension compliance, etc. that come into play in the real world of music.

Looking at the picture of the 4 555s mounted in the back of that it appears that the two rear subs have almost no baffle rendering them virtually useless with respect to reproducing low frequencies. However, they do make nice red ornaments (Christmas season is coming). I don't understand the purpose of the triangular cutouts? I guess they are as useful as the three rear facing video screens behind the passenger seats?

Don't get me wrong, I like the SPG555 concept. I had considered using one under the bow of my boat but felt there were other more effective solutions that met my needs. I like the neo magnet motor assembly and the field serviceable VC/cone assembly. I just feel that the sub is not the most suitable for boat use. After all the main reason they went with the oval configuration was for limited width applications like the rear deck of a car. It's not too hard to fit a single 15 in a boat.

Grant-

Boston in 1 cube sealed (gross) with less than 1000 watts will keep up with a 13w7. 2.1 ported allows you to have huge output and this woofer stays controlled ported unlike the W7. The install above was ported at 4.1cu.ft. per pair of subs with triangle ports at the lower corners of the picture. At 26 pounds vs 45lbs for the 12w7 (lighter because of the neodymium vs standard). You can completely break down the woofer if you need to for painting or we have had them chromed before as well. The cone area is 555cm sq. (hence the name SGP555) so compared to a round woofer it is similar to a 14.5". I am a firm JL Audio fan and have had MANY JL systems and still have one in a personal vehicle but this subs is unreal and needs to be heard. I've gone on way to much and need to leave Boston to do the talking. Here's a link:

http://www.bostonacoustics.com/car/car_product.aspx?category_id=17&family_id=130

I know this isn't a wakeboard boat and I do not have a great picture but this boat with 2 spgs downfire ported was insane for a boat.

Mike-

I agree with the point you made about the mechanical portion of the head to head. Most of my comparison waits until I can experience the product. I wouldn't want to choose between a Z06 and a Porsche Turbo based off specs and I don't think you would either. I personally like the way the SPG sounds and its output. Thats just me. Some would like a Z06 over a Turbo. You have an excellent understanding of the physics of sound and I can not argue with specs.

In regards to the lack of baffle in the setup above maybe you can explain a little bit more. The triangle cutouts are the ports for the sub enclosure. With the request to have so much in the same area this shape was picked to try to keep port velocity to a minimum. Here is an in progress shot to show the enclosure before all the clutter.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I respect yours. Feedback from others always helps me look at the big picture. Speaking of big picture and and your interest in the useful rear monitors:

^^Making dreams come true doesn't always mean they are the same as yours.

Nice work!!!!!!!!!

Soundbox: Nice work. I wanted to try some head to head testing with a Boston 555. What amp do you think pushes the 555 the best. Right now im not in the market for new subs or to Re-do my system.
8 months ago you might have gotten me to switch if it pounded harder and sounded better than my 4 12 W-7's. Have you tryed any of the 555's in a boat? I would love to come out and take a listen to a boat with a 555 in it. Thanks for the info and the Pick's

G and nu bu -

Thanks for the compliments.

G-

Amp suggestions vary depending on application. In the red tahoe and the green and purple boat they were both running a Boston GT-28 to each sub. The amps were operating at aprox. 40 percent with tons of head room and dynamic power. We are currently building a car with a pair of SPGs with a JL 1000/1v2 to the pair and the amp is almost maxed before clipping. The lead tech. director at Boston is running the GT-28 to a pair, this is the configuration is the best for the average listener and what I will be using in a current personal build.

We have only had a chance to install a few SPGs into boats but have had very positive results. I'll post a few more pics of the Purple and Green Velocity when I get to another computer. We are light on boats right now but we do have a Supreme with Wetsounds and Boston G5 woofer with radiator right now. The next boat with SPGs I'll let you pick apart. I love feedback and opinions.

grant_west 10-23-2007 4:56 PM

How is the G5 with the Raidator. I had heard a G5 12inc with a raidator had more SPL than the 555?? Is this true. Thanks 4 the info

soundbox 10-23-2007 7:13 PM

G-

It makes me nervous seeing the surround of that W7. I've seen the W7s move a ton of air. I had a problem with a 96 Impala and 3 10w7s and the surround ripped twice on all 3 around the cone and thats why that picture makes me cringe just a little. This one moved almost like that:

555 still has the advantage over the G5/Radiator combo. Radaitor offers the ability to change the weights to tune the center frequency. With the radiator (gtr12 and gtr12)you can look at it as gaining the output of a ported box with the chance to change the port length (change the freq.) while still keeping 1 cube for a 12" and 1/2 cube for the 10". Works great under a dash as high off the floor as possible of a boat with the G5 firing towards the hull and the radiator away from the hull. Have had lots of people not able to find where all the bass was coming from.

hatepain 10-23-2007 7:38 PM

The excursion on that w7 is just crazy lookin' I love it.

"G" did you ever finish the thread on your stereo rebuild from last spring? I was following that but dont remember it coming to an end with fully completed shots of your system.

grant_west 10-23-2007 8:25 PM

I have NEVER had a W7 rip or tear like what your talking about. I remember the JL tech's saying that foam was compressed from like a 3 inch piece.

I have had W7's just stop working. Voice coil melt down. I seem to have that problem fixed. LOL

pdqwrx 10-24-2007 11:55 PM

All the specs aside.......A SPG555 eats a 12W7 in over all output and sound quality. I have owned both! The W7 is a GREAT woofer but has it's limitations. All being equal, 4 12W7's or 4 SPG555's would be hard to tell the difference anyway because of the sheer output of both. It's when you only have the money and or room for a singe or two drivers that the SPG555 really starts to shine. One cube sealed sounds great and has tons of output. That is what I currently have in my car with a GT28 mono to it. All the systems posted look great.....

Cheers
Scott

wake1823 10-25-2007 6:29 AM

comapring the way a sub sounds in a car vs a baot is not a fair comaprision...anyone have any experience with one in a boat? You can get a 10w3 to slam in a car with 250 RMS.

soundbox 10-25-2007 9:18 AM

I do have experience with the woofers in a boat. I think majority of the comparisons on this thread is woofer to woofer to get a feel for the + & - of the two. In every way I think that the W7 is a great woofer and I respect anyone who has been able to install it to boat, car, truck, rv, home or any other application. I also believe that it is due for a overhaul. I wouldn't doubt that 2009 W7 goes to a W7v2. I feel that the SPG is much fresher technology and sounds better <--- I did not say louder although I think it is for sure in the same category and may be heard as louder due to the lack of distortion.

Again, I'm not attacking W7s. This is just my opinion based off all the experience I've had with both woofers.

atloutbackv 10-25-2007 10:23 AM

you all need to check out T# Audio... I have been super impressed with these at our shop. I have put these against a a 12W7 and a Rockford T2 woofer and a MTX 9500 and it blew them away.. the TSS 12 is a bad mofo.. they are relativley new to the marketplace.. check em out.

http://t3audio.com/

superair 10-25-2007 5:57 PM

I want to put 4 of these in my new 230 super air. My distributors cost is 342.00 each. Is there anywhere else I can get these. Boston wants a 3000.00 first order. I'm also thinking about the image dynamic idmax's. Haw you ever used these subs??
