1995 Waverunner Backfire

Had a little trouble starting the other day and when it did start it made the loudest backfire(I thought the thing had blown up) I've ever heard and smoked bellowed from the engine compartment like it was on fire. Got it home and ran a compression check--150 on each cylinder. It'll run but still smokes like it's on fire in the engine compartment and I can't figure out where all of the smoke is coming from. Any suggestions as to why a two-stroke wold backfire? I did buy a different two stoke oil, but mixed it as always 40 to 1.

Maybe the exhaust came loose or ruptured a hose when it backfired?

Backfiring is usually caused by timing or water in the fuel. If you didn't mess with the motor recently, it's probably the latter.

back fire probably is a timing issue... could be bad fuel... watch it carefully if it keeps happening check your timing
