Trying to decide what to go with , I heard a pair of L7's last week that made my eyeballs shake. Both would be in sealed boxes under the helm. Both at the minimum requirements built to spec. Going to push it with PDX 600.1 (600 RMS) Birthsheet was around 725 @ 14.4.

I havent heard the L7's but have heard nothing but good things about them. I have 2 12W6s running off a jl slash 1000 and have nothing bad to say about them as well. I had the w6s in ported boxs but just tried them in sealed boxes and didnt think they sounded as good, so will be going back to the original ported boxes

That's what I'm worried about, I've heard 10w6's in sealed boxes and ported is definately the way to go. The L7's I heard were in big almost 2 cubes , sealed boxes. I've never heard a 12 hit that hard in a sealed box. Had maybe 750 RMS going to it.

How was the SQ on the L7 ? The W6s might not be as loud but they are an all around good spl-sq type sub. Cost is also a concern. If you like the L7 sound and the price is close, I think you answered your own question. I agree the w6 seems to work better ported which requires a bigger box so it might not be an option that works for you.

I would go L7...more cone surface..more bump for your box

I have a JL10w7 in my BMW 540i. I choose this because of JL's superb sound quality and it still hits pretty hard. In my mastercraft 225 VRS I put 2 kicker 12L7's and they POUND!! I choose them because they move alot of air, are pretty inexpensive, have rubber surrounds(will last longer in a marine environment). Sound quality is harder to differentiate in a boat which is good because the SQ of the kickers is not the best. The box they are in is what will determine what sort of music they sound best with, make sure you dont go with too big of a woofer for the size box you have room for. If I were you I would choose the kicker's for the boat. Both are great subs, just my .02 cents...

WOW, Tough decision. Like T said my JL Setup moves a lot of air (2 10W6V2's 1 13 W7), but I could have got more effect (sound) with the L7's just because the accuracy produced by the JL's are lost in a Marine setup. Automobile with a properly powered, W7 IMHO can't be beat. Marine without a closed environment possibly a crap shoot. I have a friend with 6 Infinity Perfect 12's in his boat, and It's louder than mine. Just a matter of the sound you prefer.

I just got rid of my kickers and got JL 12w6v2s. That kicker stuff is overrated compared to JL.

I don't know what 2 JL 12w6 would sound like, but I would like to hear some one day. I know my 2 L7s hit pretty hard and I can't imagine wanting or needing anything louder. <BR> <BR>I can see how the SQ aspect of the JL may be better, but as someone already said above, sound quality is pretty much out the door on the boat when compared to overall poundingly clear loudness.

I've got 2 JL W6v2's in my boat, had 2 kickers before. The kickers were very boomy and they were also loud. The sound quality of the JL's much better. I prefer the sound of the W6's now over the Kickers, the take less wattage to sound good and can handle a smaller enclosure. I had the Kicker L5's by the way.

Chase, BOATS ARE NOT LIKE CARS IN ANY WAY WHEN IT COMES TO STEREO'S. WHAT'S GOOD IN A CAR IS NOT NECESSARILY GOOD IN A BOAT. Turn your caps off.

Sam, you should look into the Boston Acoustics SPG series. I'm runing one in my new boat when I was running a 13w7 in my old. The audio world loves these so I thought I'd give it a shot. The space requirement is very small (1 ft3).

L7 is all we install in boats. I would really recommend them. you can use a 12 in. in a .88 cuft. sealed box with light polyfil about 1/4 of the inner space. hide the box anywhere it is so small. Overpower it by about 100 to 200 watts and watch out. This is what we always use if the customer isn't trying to save money. Be ready to add more speakers to compensate for the bass. Make sure the tuning is correct on the amp or crossover. Please read the instructions for tuning or call tech support at 405-624-6023 and ask for chris. He will be all the help you need. GOOD LUCK

One more thing. Make sure the polyfill isn't too much or you will cook the woofer. Thats when voicecoils start letting loose. Also try to get a dual 2 ohm and take it to four ohms for Sound Quality. We have tried both and we found 4 ohms at the amp is best. Also use a mono amp not a 2 channel. I think that is all.

How about the Boston SPG555. It's has tons of output, sounds wonderful, it's oval shape lends itself to boat installs and it's completely rebuildable in case you blow it up. #1 14.4 volts is pretty hard to keep. Good luck powering anything at 14.4 for for more than 1 min. <BR> <BR>#2 If your going to push with a Alpine PDX-600 watt amp FOR sure go with the L-7 <BR>IMO W-7's sound great but they need good clean power IMO over 1000 watts "EACH". That Boston sub is somthing im real intrested in. It uses Neo magnets so its real light and dosent need ton's of power and the voice coil is replacable so if you blow up the sub or you want to change from a 2 Ohm to 4 Ohm sub you can replace the voice coil with out even taking the sub out of the box. Its pretty sweet. I gotta get a-hold of one. What people say here is one thing hearing one for your self is everything

Grant, what is #1 about 14.4 volts? Where did you find that info and are you talking about the SPG???

IMO the L7 are very inefficient in small sealed boxes and tend to blow up. However if the box is on the large side (2 cu ft sealed) they do hit hard and are more reliable. JL makes a great sub but I believe there are better subs for the money. In a boat where you are most likely running your system off a bank of batteries with a stock alternator efficiency is king! Try a Rockford Fosgate T1 10" sub in 1.5 cu ft ported box. You will get +7.8 db @ 40hz. The box is small, it is FREAKING LOUD AND PLAYS LOW AS HELL! The best part is it will throw down with only 750 watts. Just my .02 <BR> <BR>(Message edited by sbilyeu on August 30, 2007)

My L7 subs are in 2 cube sealed boxes and I will attest to the hard hitting that Scott mentioned above.

My 12w6v2's are both in 1.25cu ft boxes linex'd and sealed. They are getting about 400 watts a piece and slam hard. I had 3 in there but took one out because I didn't need all three to rattle my eyeballs. I like the kickers stuff to, I have all kicker amps. I just think the JL's sound cleaner at the lower impedance than Kicker.

G, I was powering the 13w7 with a JL 1000/1 mono amp. I had it under the passenger side compartment with a downfire sealed box NOT PORTED. It shook the WHOLE boat. If you stood in the middle of the boat playing some rap music when the base line would hit you could focus on the horizon and it would blurr. This is NO KIDDING. Really, too much sub for a boat in my opinion. Reason I'm going with the SPG is the box it took filled the complete compartment under there and hide the two amps mounted up front. The 1000/1 was mounted on the side wall for easy adjustments. I had the gains all turned down because it would seriously jump off the floor. Not to mention what it would do to the glove compartment!!! You didn't have to be in the boat or around it to hear the bass hitting. It was a big hit for parking on the beach (if you want to call an Oklahoma red dirt that) and listening while everyone around partied.
