Prop puller?
Do you really need to use it or can you just back the nut off and use a alluminum drift and wack it with a hammer? what are you thoughts. First time changing the prop.
If you ask 10 people you will probably get 10 opinions because It all depends on your skill level, patience, and budget. I personally don't like whacking on anything with a hammer near my boat, so I use a the proper tool.
The first time I took a prop off, I removed the nut and it slide right off.
Every time since then I've need a puller and some heat. You might get lucky, but I doubt it. |
I never use heat, with Brass/Nibral as soft as it is, I don't chance it.
We picked up a 3 jaw puller from the auto parts store (30bux) that I can put my ratchet on. For my 4 blade prop we were able to make it a 2 jaw puller, take one off and relocate the other arm so they are at 12 and 6. Leave the nut on a couple of threads so your prop won't POP off and hit the ground. |
I use the 3 jaw puller too and it works fine. Cheap at Harbor Freight.
Good point fred. I had a stainless on my last boat. I didn't even think about the nibral.

You can get a harmonic prop puller for $40 and it is money well spent. I was skeptical about using this type of puller, but it really works. I have since lost mine and last prop change was much harder and sketchier without it.

What size 3 jaw puller from harbor freight? Last time i was there i saw 3 sizes. I definately want to pick one up. TIA |
I think 4in will do it. If you have a 4 blade prop make sure you can convert the puller to 2 jaw, the 3 jaw we just used would not wk on my 4 blade prop.
I prefer the harmonic pullers as well.
I think it's a 4 inch and it is a 3 jaw puller you can convert to a two jaw.
anyone got a picture of the harmonic prop puller they can post? No photo at the link above. Just curious what it looks like.
It is simply a big round nut. I'll take a picture later. If you buy it, use PayPal. My site was just hacked.

I just pulled mine 30 minutes ago. I beat and banged on it with a rubber mallet for what seemed like hours. I talked to this old redneck boat mechanic who said to back the nut to the end of the prop shaft. Not so far that the threads are off of it but right before. Then take a rigid object aka hammer and tap on it till the prop comes off. I did not believe him till I went and tried it this afternoon. After a few light blows to the nut, the prop magically slid off. So now I am a believer.
I tried the 3 jaw puller and the 2 jaw puller from Harbor Freight but could not get the angle around the prop and rudder to make it happen. |
I made one out of a C-clamp. I could take pics if you wanted to see one. Cost me nothing. A lot better than spending 80 dollars or what ever it costs for a stupid prop puller that I used once in the 4 years I have owned my boat
used a 2x4 and a rubber mallet on mine. No problem. I bought a two jaw C clamp but couldn't get the angle right on my 4 blade prop.
Is this the Harbor Freight on you are talking about: http://www.harborfreight.com/3-piece...set-32184.html
I purchased that one but could not get the angle around the rudder or prop. I have a four blade on a 05 SANTE. I returned it. Tried both the long and the short side, as well as 1, 2 and 3 arms at a time with the same results.
Just get the tool. its expensive but its the right way to do it!
I just use a punch a a small hammer and it falls off every time have done about 5 in 2 years
I agree with Joey spend the 40 and get right tool...You can use a knife for a screwdriver but do you?
Well, I changed the prop. I used a 6 inch 2x4 and hit the end of it with two light taps and It came off. I guess I got lucky.
