Would 2 nights of 30 degree temperature freeze an engine block

So I just got my boat back from getting reupholstered and it looked dirty so we thought that maybe the upholstery dude left the boat outside so what i would like to know is would 2 days with a low of 30 freeze an engine block my engine is 2004 330hp Mercury Black Scorpion.

Plus the rest of the days he had it it did not go lower than 33

dhcomp1 02-19-2014 9:06 PM

probably not.

Bret 02-19-2014 11:26 PM

the boat was in Fresno and the day time temperatures for both those days where 57 and 61

scottb7 02-20-2014 4:45 AM

Nope.

Pad1Tai 02-20-2014 5:52 AM

No it takes about three days in the high 20's to cold soak the block.. and that's with day temps not much above freezing... Your good..

Bret 02-20-2014 8:09 AM

could anything else have frozen and cracked in the engine.

duffymahoney 02-20-2014 8:12 AM

Have him put a small heater in the boat. I leave one on all winter long.

If you have a heater and it's not a closed system then that's the most likely thing to freeze. The heater core tends to be up and exposed to the elements and they freeze much quicker than the engines do.

Pad1Tai 02-20-2014 8:55 AM

^^ true... But 30 wont do it.. leave a cup of water outside and see if it freezes solid..

Hook up a hose run it check it sposed to be 70 this weekend so it's time to springerize your boat.

phillywakeboarder 02-20-2014 10:15 AM

No way. Don't give it another thought.

TC_Mastercraf_X5 02-20-2014 10:40 AM

My mechanic said 30s arent to bad, but you really have to worry when it gets to low 20s. I had the same scare this fall as MN got cold real quick!

WheelerWake 02-20-2014 3:52 PM

Even if it did freeze (unlikely), the volume of the water is still pretty close to what it is at 32f. In order to do damage, it would have to get colder to make the volume go up. google water vs temp graphs.

Bret 02-21-2014 5:44 PM

the 2 days that i'm talking about when the low was 30 was December 13th and 14th

superair502 02-22-2014 12:00 AM

Nope... Takes a hard 2 days under 32

TundraA22 02-22-2014 3:10 AM

Sooo...Is there something wrong with the boat or are you just worried something is wrong?

I would not be too concerned. But I would be unconcerned based on the fact that it takes a large chunk of metal encased in fiberglass a while to drop below 32 degrees rather than a slightly less than accurate opinion that 31 degree ice will not crack a block.

On a separate note, even if you did not bother to winterized why didn't you at least pull the drain plugs? That takes about 2 minutes and will get rid of a lot of use water. Not as complete as running RV antifreeze through a fake a lake but still gives you a little wiggle room

Bret 02-22-2014 8:39 AM

i'm just worried

Did you go drain the block yet? Or are you still worried? You're fine
