My homebrew wakeboard
I know it's my first post but I'm a longish time lurker...
I've noticed a few people have posted their board builds recently so though I'd add mine to the mix :) It's still not quite finished but getting there, Spec's: 1420 x 445 at midpoint, 300 tips Approx 3kg (6.6lb) but the next one WILL be lighter, aiming for 2.5kg (5.5lb) or less 10mm concave at midpoint, flat tips late 3 stage hybrid rocker wrapped rails at the moment but next board will have PU or ABS rails Full Carbon Fibre & foam construction using UD, Bi-axial & twill weaves Foam is 6mm (1/4in) Corecell M80 from Gurit, propper marine foam with decent mechancial properties This is the foam all measured & cut out with indert positions <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/landychris/12956208164/" title="2014-03-05 20.32.01 by landychris, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7444/12956208164_99f1ecbef3_z.jpg" width="360" height="640" alt="2014-03-05 20.32.01"></a> Layed up and in the vacuum bag, the next board will have a heated cure in the oven. (The resin I use likes a higher temperature cure cycle) <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/landychris/13055321233/" title="2014-03-09 19.18.40 by landychris, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7401/13055321233_b529ccc0d1_z.jpg" width="640" height="360" alt="2014-03-09 19.18.40"></a> Demouled and first trim but shows the amount of rocker <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/landychris/13100981583/" title="2014-03-12 08.47.39 by landychris, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3684/13100981583_93436e679a_z.jpg" width="360" height="640" alt="2014-03-12 08.47.39"></a> Edge to edge concave, should edge well but expect it to be quite unforgiving. <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/landychris/13100994433/" title="2014-03-12 08.48.38 by landychris, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7305/13100994433_71bac0e2e3_z.jpg" width="640" height="360" alt="2014-03-12 08.48.38"></a> Rocker profile, the camera has skewed the angles a bit as it looks a little squashed <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/landychris/13101150374/" title="2014-03-12 08.49.51 by landychris, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3798/13101150374_75c92fb99e_z.jpg" width="640" height="360" alt="2014-03-12 08.49.51"></a> The basic board, first trim done but needs a bit of work to get a decent finish <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/landychris/13100998163/" title="2014-03-12 08.48.06 by landychris, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3811/13100998163_f74b5f4293_z.jpg" width="360" height="640" alt="2014-03-12 08.48.06"></a> The concave is quite high so I'm going to have to lay up some extra over the heal/toe of the bindings to ensure it's flat. Thats it so far :) once I've done some more work on it and taken it out for a ride, I'll post up the results |
wow nice work! Looks like it'd be a fun ride. Can't wait to see the finished product
|
Thanks :) forgot to add it's got 4 carbon stringers in it too (the cut lines in the first picture)
|
Awesome! Looking forward to seeing videos of it on the water.
|
That looks like a fun project!
|
looks awesome can't wait to see the finished project!
|
Looks good! Let us know how it rides.
|
that's is cool but for real how much time, money, and effort will go into this by the time its perfected? I can get year old new boards for 200 byucks now on sale and slightly used board for 150.00
do you think it will be worth all the time and effort and what are your real costs? |

It is pretty awesome to see somebody do this! This could make a good pass time hobby! I would like to try something like this if I had the time and materials. What did you use for a mold? I am assuming that you used wood for the mold and just have a smooth surface on the bottom of the finished product.

I made the mould from plywood to get the shape then the layup surface is perspex / acrilic to get a nice smooth underside. Work has gone a bit nuts now so won't get time to work on it for a week or 2 :( |
Quick update on progress, the foot pad area has been bonded on
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/landychris/13534884054" title="2014-03-29 21.36.36 by landychris, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5495/13534884054_5d902dfc88.jpg" width="500" height="281" alt="2014-03-29 21.36.36"></a> It's now been sanded and shaped ready for the reinforcement to be added over the footpad. <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/landychris/13539207494" title="2014-03-31 14.55.16 by landychris, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7437/13539207494_91fd392436.jpg" width="500" height="281" alt="2014-03-31 14.55.16"></a> |

Just need to add the fins now so progress to date:
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7403/...eced7d72ac.jpg https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2819/...b2507a4041.jpg Board is now laquered but it really shows up the flaws now so I might sand that down and paint it to hide it all with a few choice bits of carbon showing... https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7016/...0157b08979.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3696/...5b1e4765b7.jpg It actually looks better in the flesh, the photos seem to have emphasized the flaws unfortunately :( As it's my first board made like this, I'm pretty happy with how it's come out as the astetic wasn't top priority, more proof of concept for the next board :) The addition of an opaque topsheet would hide any distortion in the weave too. Finished weight 3.6kg, so a bit on the dumpy side but I also know where I can take out the weight for next time... |
Well.. it worked! Not me riding btw though it's Ross Phillips, one of the British mens team
