05-14-2007 7:14 PM

Just wondering if anyone was riding the Delta near Steamboat Slough today? They spotted two whales cruising back and forth! WTF? <BR> <BR>Check out KCRA, channel 3 Sacramento for the story. <BR> <BR>What would it be like to be riding, crash, and look up to see two big ass whales coming your way? <img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/clipart/sad.gif" border=0> (Don't crash I guess....)

jusstty 05-14-2007 7:49 PM

You could ollie or grind them, could be pretty fun! <BR>It would be a sick video!

bftskir 05-14-2007 8:11 PM

05-14-2007 8:16 PM

Would that be a "Whaley"? <img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/clipart/uhoh.gif" border=0> <BR> <BR>Good sh*t guys!

peter_c 05-14-2007 9:55 PM

I would have to jump in the water and swim with them...what an experience that would be.

attila916 05-14-2007 10:19 PM

weskel 05-15-2007 6:00 AM

We always have Dolphins come up to the boat and chase our tubes, I was pulling my son on Sunday and had a couple come within arms reach of the tube. <BR> <BR>Even though we see them all the time it is really cool... <BR> <BR>Kelly (weskel)

bftskir 05-15-2007 10:07 AM

these are blue whales <BR>the big one is between 50 and 70 feet long <BR>they are 60 miles inland from the golden gate bridge swimming in murky warm delta waters they are nearly in freshwater <BR>uscg saw 4 near rio vista

bftskir 05-15-2007 10:12 AM

heres a pic <BR><img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/65919/448696.jpg" alt="Upload">

liquidmx 05-15-2007 4:01 PM

Like the snakes, cars, sunken boats, otters and seals werent enough!

bftskir 05-15-2007 6:55 PM

don't forget the beavers<img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/clipart/proud.gif" border=0> <BR>and now the whale update: <BR>now they are in west sacramento, farther inland than any whale ever swam, they followed the deepwater ship channel, there were not 4 just 2 it appears, they are more than 90 miles inland from the golden gate bridge...whale history being made here

chaser 05-16-2007 3:20 PM

whale update: <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/05/16/delta.whales.ap/index.html" target="_blank">http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/05/16/delta.whales.ap/index.html</a> <BR>Actually they are humpback whales, not blue whales.

dabell 05-16-2007 3:24 PM

Humpbacks are on the endangered species list. If I am correct, you are not even allowed to an engine or boat motor on within 100 yards (or more) of these creature. Anyone in HI can attest to this one.....

boss210 05-16-2007 3:36 PM

they are going to die if they dont get back to the salt water. man that is going to be smelly

bftskir 05-16-2007 7:10 PM

yes bob humpbacks not blues. <BR>various reports have called them gray, blue and humpback. the current pics clearly show them to be humpbacks. they are going to try to herd them out to sea on thursday 17th, the big one has definitely tangled with a prop, it has a huge cut in its back, the smaller one is said to be injured as well...i hope they make it back out the 80 miles to the golden gate and out to sea. it took them a week to do it back in 85...they bang pipes behind(ancient japanese hunting method) and play whales feeding sounds ahead to lead them...80 miles thru the delta and out the golden gate.....come on everybody has to root for these whales they need all the help they can get!

wake_pirate 05-16-2007 10:05 PM

Making lemonade from lemons = Worst case sushi from beached whales... just kidding, hope they get turned around. How fast do they travel? Do they kick out any wake?

attila916 05-16-2007 10:07 PM

The whales were in W.Sac today!!! Crazy

greatdane 05-16-2007 10:28 PM

I heard both whales were hit by boats. Damn, who the fruck did that?

attila916 05-16-2007 10:35 PM

GD, were they hit today in the deep water channel or back in the delta? <BR> <BR>(Message edited by attila916 on May 16, 2007)

dabell 05-17-2007 6:17 AM

They were hit within the past three days sometime. They don't know exactly because they lost track of them for awhile.

05-17-2007 6:29 AM

Went out yesterday........no whale sightings, but who the hell has a White, with, I think dark and light blue combo X-star? Holy F**K did they put on a clinic! Whoever that was, thanks for the show! <BR> <BR>P.S. I hope the whales make it back!

wakeman7 05-17-2007 7:23 AM

I thought this was a joke at first.

litlone873 05-17-2007 9:38 AM

Rik - sounds like CIE's XStar. <BR> <BR>I thought they put a ban on boats in the area of the whales? At least they did here in W. Sac on Tuesday.

05-17-2007 9:51 AM

Renee, we were up North on the river a little ways! <BR> <BR>CIE's Xstar? Maybe........they definitely had CIE skillz!

bassmanjoshis 05-17-2007 12:11 PM

apparently both whales got cut pretty badly. My guess is from boats. that sucks.

iridelow1998 05-17-2007 12:56 PM

They said there were cuts that were in line with being cut by a prop. 2 feet wide and 6 inches deep on the bigger one and more serious cuts on the smaller one. I'm just wondering who wouldn't see a WHALE in the water ahead of them. They seem to be staying on the surface of the water and I know when I'm driving I'm looking for anything that looks odd. Pretty sad and possibly careless if you ask me.

dabell 05-17-2007 1:13 PM

What is funny, the SacBee is saying that the cuts are 2 meters long..... <a href="http://www.sacbee.com/102/story/183755.html" target="_blank">http://www.sacbee.com/102/story/183755.html</a> <BR> <BR>I believe you that they are 2 feet. It must be an error on the SacBee.....

bftskir 05-17-2007 2:15 PM

watch the pics they can't tell how bad it is, but you can see a big gash on its back, the water in the delta is very murkey, if they are just 1 foot under you can't see them, they say they think whoever hit them most likely knew they hit something....if i hit em accidently...i would not be announcing it...unless they wanted to be public enemy numero uno... <BR>they can't measure the cut, its big, you can see it flapping...

bftskir 05-17-2007 2:55 PM

<a href="http://www.kcra.com/news/13329325/detail.html" target="_blank">http://www.kcra.com/news/13329325/detail.html</a> <BR>here is pics and video

dabell 05-17-2007 3:23 PM

It's not 2 meters though.... That is the point I am trying to say. SacBee.com is know to over exaggerate a lot of things and there is a HUGE difference between 2 feet and 2 meters. We are talking at least 4 feet difference...

greatdane 05-17-2007 3:47 PM

Looking at the wound makes me very sad. <BR> <BR>The wound is a big long clean gash. Wouldn't a prop make a mess?

bftskir 05-17-2007 4:04 PM

its hard to say...the first pics appeared to show something on it maybe whatever that was cut him when it came off? it is in the blubber, did not cut through to flesh and muscle the cut goes below the waterline on its side from the top of its back...the whale is roughly 50 ft long, look at it in comparison to the boats...the cut may well be 6 feet long...the baby is cut on its side/belly but i've seen no pics showing its cut, just the witnesses reports...tvnews ran 1985 video of Humphrey and he was breeching and waving his big side flippers and very active, he was not injured...these two act very differently, today the rescue plan apparently did not work...humphfrey was here 26 days... <BR>if you ever visit rio vista after you check out fosters and have a drink walk down to the river there is a monument to Humphfrey, its really cool and fosters bighorn will blow your mind

melanie 05-17-2007 4:25 PM

They might want to start naming these guys too because it doesnt look very promising for either of them. I'm going with "Kappa" &amp; "Sigma".

bftskir 05-17-2007 5:25 PM

OK <BR>Delta and Lindsey

05-17-2007 5:34 PM

I'm going with "Moby Dick" (or "Dickafer" to be PC)<img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/clipart/lol.gif" border=0> and little "whale-y".....

bftskir 05-20-2007 8:33 PM

so here it is the 20th and the whales have decided to try to swim out of the deepwater channel, they are making their way out as of about 3:30 pm, a couple big tugboats had to go out to meet a ship and the whales followed them out of the port and into the channel headed south, so they are moving, and so far can only go in the deepwater channel, tonight in the dark, the 10 or so boats that are following will have a tough time seeing the whales, and there are alot of wrong turns to avoid...

tomcalabria 05-20-2007 11:09 PM

I heard that the whales just came up to Sacramento to see Brodie Chaboooooooooya and Al the wakeviolater ride. They saw enough and are headed back out to the big blue ocean.

attila916 05-21-2007 12:35 AM

LOL, good one Tom!

05-22-2007 8:05 AM

tom, you're silly! <IMG SRC="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/clipart/happy.gif" ALT=":-)" BORDER=0>

sanddragon2004 05-22-2007 12:20 PM

word is rio vista and that part of the delta is closed! should be really crowded down near stockton and every where else because of it!

05-23-2007 9:23 AM

People are funny. When large mammals beach themselves or get "lost" in inland waterways, we go to great effort and expense to save them, yet when they're back in deep water we trip over each other in an effort to hunt them to extinction. Whatever makes us feel better, I guess.

ronnyboy27 05-23-2007 9:28 AM

Isn't whaling illegal? Who hunts them to extinction? You are making blanket statements with no backup. How did you come to these conclusions.

dabell 05-23-2007 9:35 AM

Japan and I think Norway still hunt whales.

morty 05-23-2007 10:25 AM

Is the area around rio vista completely closed and if so, for how long. I am going to snug harbor June 15-20. Will it be open by then again?

ronnyboy27 05-23-2007 10:29 AM

I don't think that I've ever lived in Japan or Norway. I don't knowingly buy whale products so back off swass.

05-23-2007 10:51 AM

<img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/clipart/lol.gif" border=0> <BR> <BR>For what it's worth, I used "we" to describe humans, not Americans. It was just an observation...the merit of which is debatable, but I was not trying to make some sort of grandiose political or social statement. And I was certainly not trying to infringe upon your right to consume whale products, Ron. But your MasterCraft sucks.

epic1 05-23-2007 10:12 PM

calm down Ron... You whale hunting freak...j/k, calm down...

weskel 05-24-2007 7:57 AM

Heres what you are not supposed to do with wayward whales... <BR> <BR><a href="http://www.perp.com/whale" target="_blank">www.perp.com/whale</a>

sanddragon2004 05-25-2007 10:20 AM

what a wasite of tax dollars, do we really need this many flipin boats following them, i mean really what the heck are they going to accomplish besides wasting 4.00 per gallon in fuel? <BR> <BR>yea they are in a delta <BR><a href="http://extras.mnginteractive.com/live/media/site568/2007/0525/20070525__whale25~2_300.JPG" target="_blank">http://extras.mnginteractive.com/live/media/site568/2007/0525/20070525__whale25~2_300.JPG</a>

denystaucd 05-26-2007 1:08 PM

Just saw the whales in rio vista and almost rearended the people stopping on the bridge to see them. lol.. <BR> <BR>Andy not all the boats following are Tax payer paid for. Several boats are non-profits helping out and research groups spending their "own" money, from donation, to help also. <BR> <BR>Cheers and have fun on the water this weekend, <BR>Dc

bftskir 05-27-2007 6:09 PM

good news on the whales, after going south back down the deepwater they went under the rio vista bridge then turned around went back under it and spent a week cicling today they again went under the rio vista bridge and have gotten down to sherman island they are dodging wind surfers and kite boarders, its too rough and windy for most boating though, so they are almost halfway back to the sea...i hope everybody is rooting for them

socalwakepunk 05-29-2007 8:19 PM

TV news piece on this they interviewed a Mr. Rod McInnis, wondering if it's the same Rod McInnis that frequents this discussion board?

tomcalabria 05-29-2007 9:18 PM

I think that they are hanging around for the next CIE or DRA EVENT.

bftskir 05-30-2007 10:31 AM

they may have gone out under the golden gate last night<img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/clipart/happy.gif" border=0> <BR><img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/65919/455292.jpg" alt="Upload"> <BR><img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/65919/455293.jpg" alt="Upload"> <BR><img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/65919/455294.jpg" alt="Upload">
