We use bolts instead. They don't poke out or come undone like screws.

The best historic adhesives (not really glues) use powerful solvents ... like toulene, triclorethylene, tetracholorethylene (aka perchorethylene , or ‘perc’) ... which can cause ??? well, expensively paid expert witnesses can testify to not this and not that ... but, leukemia, brain cancer ... sweet things.
