How many quarts of oil should I buy for my Mercruiser 350 MAG MPI? Time to do the first oil change since I bought the boat. I think I'll go with Rotella 10W-30 or 10W-40 from what I've read on past posts.

Five

You need about 5L annoyingly.

Thanks guys

Double check the manual. I think it calls for straight weight oil if its not the merc marine... Like Rotella straight 30w or 40w.

I wish I had a manual! <IMG SRC="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/clipart/happy.gif" ALT=":-)" BORDER=0> If I did I'd just put whatever it recommended. Unfortunately I don't, anybody have a manual and can tell me which oil is supposed to go in a 2001 Mecruiser 350 MAG MPI?

camassanger 02-12-2010 8:48 AM

You can buy the manual off of the mercruiser website

This link may help you. <BR><a href="http://www.mercurymarine.com/serviceandwarranty/mercruiserfaqs/fueloil.php" target="_blank">http://www.mercurymarine.com/serviceandwarranty/mercruiserfaqs/fueloil.php</a>

That's great info, but now I'm frustrated. I can't find anywhere in this little town that has motor oil with those specifications. I was able to cross reference the oil filter to a Fram (which is the only thing available to me locally) Some of the local fisherman told me that there really isn't much difference. <BR> <BR>Does anyone use any particular off the shelf oil for their Merc 350?

wake_upppp 02-13-2010 1:04 PM

Valvolive 10/40 conventional is what Ive used since warranty expired. I change every 25hrs.

rio_sanger 02-13-2010 6:41 PM

From the Mercruiser service manual: <BR>(after the Quicksilver sales pitch) <BR> <BR>"A good grade straight weight detergent automotive oil per the operating chart below." <BR> <BR>Over 50 degrees, where I ride, and I assume most of us ride, SAE 40. I have been running straight 40 in my Black Scorpion for ten years, and my Merc before that for six years, with no problems.

wake_upppp 02-13-2010 7:14 PM

Only problem with straight 40 is if you ever operate in colder climates like say a winter morning, that oil is not going to thin when its cold and thats a little hard on the engine at start up. just run a 10/30 or 10/40 and your covered.

rio_sanger 02-13-2010 7:54 PM

I agree Sparky, that's why I said "most" of us. <BR> <BR> If it's below 50 degrees, the only kind of boarding I'm doing is snowboarding... <img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/clipart/happy.gif" border=0>

I was thinking I'd go out and flood the rink tomorrow. There are a couple cracks in the ice that might catch an edge. <img src="http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/clipart/lol.gif" border=0> <BR> <BR>Corbin, you can get truck oil that's a 15w-40 or a European car oil that's a 5w-40. Either are fine. The engine will start faster with a multigrade in it. The important number is not the 'w' number from an operating perspective.

corbin 02-14-2010 7:15 AM

Thanks guys. I really appreciate it, I will certainly take your advice. I need to get some oil in there soon. <BR> <BR>One question, (although it doesn't really matter too much) why do you suppose the Merc website says the use of multi viscosity oils is specifically not recommended? The oil they sell is 25W-40 which not a straight weight oil, it's multi viscosity.

rallyart 02-14-2010 9:26 AM

It's an old recommendation.

ajholt7 02-14-2010 9:54 AM

Get some Amsoil marine 10w-40 and never look back. .02
