I'm new to the bay area and looking for a lakefront rental somewhere relatively close to San Mateo for a long weekend. Seems like there are a lot of rentals on Clear lake and a few on Berryessa with a place to park a boat. Also seems like the ones on Clear lake are a bit cheaper. Any opinions on these or other lakes in the area?

nothing on berryessa anymore, but you can find something in the highlands (1 min from lake)

How far are you willing to drive? Most of the lakes don't have waterfront homes because the water levels vary so much throughout the year.

Houseboating is the way to go to spend the weekend waterfront. I used to live in Foster City ... my choices -

1. Shasta - 4hrs
2. Bullards Bar - 3.5h
3. Don Pedro - 3hr
4. New Melonies - 3hr
5. Lake Berryessa - 2hr
6. Delta - 1.5hr
7. the stinky lagoon in San Mateo (5min)

Not worth the drive (in my opinion):
1. Commanche Reservoir
2. Folsom Lake
3. Sacramento River
4. Clear Lake
5. San Antonio (south on 101)
