Lake Elsinore, CA - The world of wakeboarding crowned
nine new World Champions on Friday in the Vans WWA Wakeboard World
Championship, the third and final jewel of the Vans Triple Crown of
Wakeboarding.
Men, women, girls and boys of all ages fought on Lake Elsinore for
the title of World Champion in the nine amateur divisions behind the Correct
Craft 2001 Air Nautique wakeboard boat.
For six of the nine the World Championship was a further vindication
of their wakeboarding abilities. These six added World Championships to the
National Championships earned in Orlando earlier this year.
In the Girls Finals, Tamara Moores of Paradise, CA picked up right
where she left off a year ago, claiming the World Championship to add to her
National Championship. Another young woman who became a double winner is
Megan McNeil who took home first in the Junior Women's Finals.
One name that has become very familiar in wakeboarding is young
Robert "Tadpole" Soven, who won the Junior Boys title to go along with his
National title. For Soven the win is his second World Championship in a row.
Young Tadpole has some serious shoes to fill. His older brother,
Phillip "Froggy" Soven, became the youngest pro in wakeboarding history in
2001, making the jump at 11 years old. If Tadpole keeps tearing up the
junior ranks he may not be far behind.
Switching from the younger crew to the older competitors, David
Cornwall took home the Veterans World Title to go along with his Nationals
win. Cornwall set the pace for the men 40 and over. The Veterans Final had a
very international feel with two riders from Japan, Takao Okubo and Sotarou
Inoue, taking second and third respectively.
In the Masters Finals, Billy Garcia made it two in a row, showing he
is the class for that age level. Jeff Barton, the Editor of Wake Boarding,
added a fourth place Worlds finish to his third place finish in the
Nationals in the Masters Finals.
Donald Shelbrick was the final rider of the day to take home double
honors, making himself the class of the Men's I division.
Other riders standing on top of the wakeboarding world on Friday
include Tiffany Finley who won the Amateur Women's Division, Brian Francis
who took Open Men and Geno Yauchler in Men's II.
