Lake Elsinore, CA - The Vans WWA Wakeboard World
Championship is the culmination of a year of hard work for the world of
wakeboarding. Competitors from across the United States, Canada, Asia and down under
have descended upon Lake Elsinore to lay claim to the World Championship.
Action began on Thursday with many of the world's top amateurs
competing behind the 2001 Super Air Nautique wakeboard boat. In all, 68
competitors took the water on Thursday with 43 moving to Friday's World
Championship finals.
A strong group of riders hailing from California earned spots in
Friday's finals. Notables include Tamara Moores from Paradise, CA who took
the top spot in the Girls Semifinals with a score of 59.67, just besting
Amber Hansen of Florida who finished second in with a 59.11. The first-place
finish gives Moores the advantage of being the last rider off the dock for
the World Championship. Moores comes into the event as the defending World
Champion and 2001 National Champion, earning the honor in Orlando just a
month ago.
DanaStarr Cubic, also from California, earned a spot in the Amateur
Women's Finals, finishing third in her heat on Thursday. Cubic finished
second to Tiffany Landry of Mississippi in the National Championships.
One of the youngest competitors of the day to advance to the finals
was six-year old, Conner Elward, who practices and competes at Canyon Lake.
Elward earned a spot in the Jr. Boys finals where he will be competing
against defending Junior Boys World Champion Robert "Tadpole" Soven.
With the younger kids taking out the morning rounds, the afternoon
was open for the adult amateur competitors. Juan Carreon from Brentwood, California
advanced to the Open Men's Semifinals by finishing second in his qualifying
heat.
In Men II Semifinals, Damien Klass of Canyon Lake, California took a third
place finish into the Men's Finals on Friday.
Altogether, nine World Champions will be crowned on Friday with
competition starting at 9 a.m. Men's and Women's Pro Divisions will begin on
Saturday with the Pro Finals taking place on Sunday.
