The America's Cup just ended, and it was one of the best competitions ever.
It seemed like everyone pushed it on the girls and guys side.
I have never seen the girls push the limits like they did at this event. The ladies have progressed more this past weekend than they have in the last two years. Toeside 540's won't win a competition for you anymore, because at least five girls are capable of throwing them and have been.
Dallas Friday (Malibu) jumped off to an early lead by winning the two first rounds. She
was able to hold onto the lead with two third place finishes for the final two rounds. Dallas scored 330 total points (100+100+65+65). Some of Dallas' more impressive moves this weekend were nice toeside 540's, huge Tantrums to fakie and a Krypt attempt.
Maeghan Major (MasterCraft) started off sluggish, but won the two final rounds. It wasn't enough to overtake Dallas, but it was enough to take 2nd place. Meg scored 320 points (55+65+100+100). Maeghan had several nice tricks this weekend including a toeside 540, and her wrapped KGB.
Buster Lutgert (Nautique) landed her Whirlybird several times and almost landed a Moby Dick in the fourth round. Buster ended up 4th.
Zane Schwenk (MasterCraft) won his first title of the 2001 season, along with
8000 big ones (dollars). Zane won 3 out of his 4 heats, including the final 2 days.
Zane scored 365 points (100+65+100+100). He threw a whole bunch of Mobes,
and landed his Corkscrew 720 pretty consistently.
Erik Ruck (MasterCraft)
was within striking distance going into the 4th round but fell on a Corkscrew 900
on the double up. However, Erik did land his Corkscrew 720 and came in 2nd
overall with a score of 305 (80+100+80+45).
Darin Shapiro (Malibu) rounded out the podium with a 3rd place finish. Darin was only five points behind Erik with a 300 (80+100+55+65). Darin stuck his final pass but it just wasn't
enough on the technical end.
Shane Bonifay landed some sick blind 540's this weekend, which helped secure his 4th place spot. Daniel Watkins landed a toeside on-axis 900 off of the double up in the final round, but it wasn't
enough to put him into the top five overall.
The next big competition is in California, and perhaps is the most important
competition of the year.....The World Championships. Look for all the inside
