The newest tournament to hit the water is now half over. The America's Cup
is a completely new, completely different style of tournament. The setting
for this new breed of tournamnets is in West Palm Beach, Florida on Lake
Okaheelee. This four day tournamnet uses a new boating and scoring system.
The riders get to name the boat of their choice from the sponsoring boat
companies (Malibu, Nautique, MasterCraft and Supra). Plus the new scoring
system is now cumulative instead of all or nothing. So they add up your
placings from all four rounds and whoever has the highest overall score
wins. So if someone has a bad day, they can still make up for it with the
other three days.
Currently Dallas Friday (Malibu) is on top for the girls. Dallas has already
won the first two rounds which gives her 200 points (1st place 100 + 1st
place 100) and a commanding lead. Dallas is going bigger than ever and has
also put a toeside 540 and a huge Tantrum to fakie in her first two runs.
Tara Hamilton (Mastercraft) is riding clean and currently holds the second
place spot.
Darin Shapiro (Malibu) and Erik Ruck (Mastercraft) are tied for first on the
Men's side. They both have 180 points (1st place 100 + 2nd place 80). They
both got 80 points yesterday for getting 2nd place in their heats and they
got 100 points each today for winning their heats. Darin is riding big, as usual,
and Erik is definetly on with his Corkscrew 720.
Now that the competition is half over (two of the four days are complete). They
have put the current top 10 into a single heat and have eliminated everyone
else that was in the tournament. Brett Eisenhauer, Shawn Watson, Danny Harf,
Shaun Murray and Rob Struharik have all been eliminated from the
competition. Each one of them threw unbelievably hard tricks and just had
some bad luck. Danny even landed back to back 720's (Corkscrew and Rodeo)
but falls killed him.
It should be interesting who comes out on top in this new style tournament.
