Here are some pic's of what I am work on.

Im installing 4 Arc Audio 2300's to push 4 12 W-7's. Here are some pic's of the amp install.
First I removed the orignal carpet
Then I took down all the old amp mounting boards so I had a clean slate.
Then I installed some new 28oz Nautique carpet
The Amp racks and the fuse block's were all mounted the same way.
The mounts are made of 3/4 MDF. They were coverd with epoxy resin and sanded and painted.
This is the front power/ground block
This is the rear power/ground block
Mounted Amp's
Power and Ground. The Mounts have a bolt comming threw them. The Amp's have a Aluminum bar on them that makes it easy to hang them on the rack.
All the Amps are running Cat5 cable into a RJ-45 balanced imput instead of RCA's. Here is a pic of the Cat5/ RJ 45 imput.

Thought I was going to find some info on a secret fishing spot with a lot of bass. Nevertheless, that is pretty impressive. Would like to see what the setup will be for batteries and caps.

Wow I never knew Cat5 was an effective way to run an audio signal. I suppose I should have just assumed since I use Cat5 in many non-typical applications in residential settings. As usual completly mind blowing install/setup Grant

What processor put's out a signal that utilizes Cat5 Grant?
By Paul (gherk) on Monday, March 12, 2007 - 11:32 pm:    Edit Post Delete Post
Good question. Grant is there an EQ that you can hook the cat5 up to or do you have to convert it to RCA first?

Grant West ladies and gents! The very DEFINITION of EXCESSIVE!

I'm stressing about the cost of one of those, and you go and buy four. Decided to go with the M475 for the head unit so I could stick with the same wired remote.

looking good! will your alt/batt setup be the same or you upgrading it?
By "G" (grant_west) on Tuesday, March 13, 2007 - 8:46 am:    Edit Post Delete Post
I have never used Cat5 before. This is the first install that I have done that is using it. Arc say's that you can take the Cat5 line and cut it at the end where you want to convert it to RCA's or Symbalink and just add what ever end you like. So I will see how it go's I hope it works out the way they say it will. So if I need a pair of RCA's at the end Ill just cut the Cat5 and add what ever I end up running. I was planning on removing the RCA cable that was pushing a signal to my PPI-4125 amp's and using Cat5. I will have to add RCA's to the Cat5 for thoes amps so its no big deal. I also have the Audio Control BLX-10.I dont know if im gona use it. Its a Line Driver/RCA to Cat5 converter. So if things get wierd I can always use that to push/pull or convert a signal. I had planned on using the Audio Control BLX-10 to share a signal between boats using Cat5 and the RJ-45 connectors doing away with RCA cable's.

Thanks gyu's: Jason: My batterys are pretty un impressieve. I have 5 SeaVolt 92amp hr batterys thats 530 amp hrs that power the system and are tucked away. No cap's. Nacho: The charging system will stay the same. Balmar 220 Amp Alternator. They system worked perfict all last year. I should be finishind with the Amp's and getting started with the sub Box's in the next few day's. Im gonna get Clay on the Job. "Sub box Masta" Babson I got a chance to hear Joe's Boat. BOOOOOOOOOM, Sounds good.

Grant, Check out this link. I was looking into using cat 5 myself a few months back but then I seen that.
By "G" (grant_west) on Tuesday, March 13, 2007 - 12:57 pm:    Edit Post Delete Post
Paul: Thanks 4 the Link. I know you know about Cat5 and network systems. I agree with what little I read and what it was saying. I didnít read all of it because I think I know where he was going and I agree, Simply adding Cat5 to your system is not going to eliminate noise and or make a balanced line. Iím not an expert at this and Iím only going buy "What I was told" at ARC. The line is not what makes a balanced signal. Itís the transmission point and the receiving point along with the line that give's you a balanced signal. So the processor that youíre using should push a balanced line. And the amp that youíre pushing it to should have a balanced input. And the line that you push it threw should be a twisted pair Cat5. When all 3 things are met it should work the way Iím hoping. A true balance line. Iím going to use the Zapco Digital DSP-6 SL EQ that pushed a balanced signal Threw symbalink. Iím hoping I can cut the symbalink at the end where it runs into my Arc amps and install a RJ-45 connecter into the balanced input of my ARC se 2300's. If anybody has any more info on this type of instillation it would be great to hear from you.

My house is all wired with CAT5
By Tim Krutz (timmy) on Tuesday, March 13, 2007 - 7:43 pm:    Edit Post Delete Post
i would think they would run a digital signal through the cat5, why would you want to push an analog signal through such thin wires?

if you are running a balanced signal, why wouldn't you use XLR's and nice mic cable type lines like they so in recording studios and such?

By "G" (grant_west) on Tuesday, March 13, 2007 - 9:09 pm:    Edit Post Delete Post
The gauge wire inside Cat5 is not much smaller than in hight quality RCA's. XLR cables seem a bit large to be running threw a boat

I don't see why you wouldn't be able to use the Zapco eq. I found a pin-out schematic for the symbalink cables somewhere. I had a zapco eq at one point in time and I made my own symbalink to rca cables and it worked fine. The cat 5 stuff is rather interesting to me considering that is my line of work. I would suggest using shielded twisted pair (STP)if you can. That might help a little bit as well.

The pc may just need a little help with seeing your camera sometimes my PC freaks out and doesn't seet my external USB drive even though the light is on. Right click on "my computer" and choose "properties", click tab that says "hardware", then choose "device manager". In the new window expand the "disk drives" to see if you see your camera in there. If you do, right click on it an uninstall it. If that doesn't work go to the cameras manufacturer and download the driver for your camera, reboot, and that should do it.

Ok Here are some Pic's I gave up at home. Had to load these ones from work. Pain in the!

Clay came over this weekend and did his "BOX Magic". Yup he seemd to make these boxes with 1.2 to 1.3 QSF of air space with all the funky angles. Just Perfict. My boat is way smaller than a SAN. Clay had put W7's in the passenger side compartmentof many SAN's and the boxes turned out to be 1.0 QSF. I was suprised that my smaller boat was able to squeeze these larger boxes, Thats after Hr's of moving things out of the way to make room for these boxes. Im pretty sure that this is the only Air Nautique around with 4 12's in this configuration. Any one with 4 12's set up like this would have had to do the same work I did.

The square box is gonna be fully painted (red) with plexy window's and LED's inside The squares you see are the plexy windows. The other box is gonna be painted on the baffel side ((red) and then the rest of the box is getting Line-X'd. There will be a trim pannel to finish it off.

You can also see in the pic above. The carpet has been maked with a Pen where the box at the drivers feet meets the floor at the corner. The Ski locker needs to be sectioned so the box can clear the ski locker door when its open the floor will need to have a peice made to fit the cut out section. All the carpet is coming out and New carpet is going in

Then I made a Holder for my New Alpine remote.
I had a hole in the transome from where my old remote was and I needed to make somthing to fill the hole and hold my new remote. Its not finished yet but you can get the Idea. The remote itself will be held in with velcro so you can take The remote out of its holder and control your system from 150 feet away. Its waterproof and it floats

4-12's I cant wait to hear. Youre definately going to get more Deep bass from having it underneath the Dash compared to having it behind the drivers seat like mine.

Grant I didnt read whether or not you are using solid core or stranded cat 5. I would be concerned about all the vibration eventually getting to that wire if it is single strand solid core. One of the simulators I work on was built with the stranded cat 5 so that is how I know it is available on the market. Anywhere else, even in a car, I wouldnt think it would be a problem but on a boat and a boat that is going to be vibrating even more from 4 W7's???
By "G" (grant_west) on Wednesday, April 04, 2007 - 12:20 pm:    Edit Post Delete Post
Bob" I dont know if the cat 5 is Solid or stranded. Your saying the solid core would tend to break with all the vibration. Ill check. Its all Belkin cat5. Ill look and see what it is. But I doubt that the vibration will be a problem If I have wires dangeling ect I see your point. But you never know I have never run cat5 before so you might just be right Ill keep a eye on it thanks for the heads up.

BTW, you may want to find a good gel-coat guy... those 4 12's are probably gonna spider-web your hull. LOL!! Definitely going to be testing your hull rigidity.

How did you make those speaker rings & the holder for the remote? How the hell did you get the upholstery out of the bow???
By "G" (grant_west) on Friday, April 06, 2007 - 8:47 am:    Edit Post Delete Post
Javoney: I get it from the local Auto Body supply. Depending on what your doing (glueing) there is a few differnt glue's you can get at home depot that work perfict.
Big D I just traced a speaker grill with a felt tip pen. I cut the MDF directly on the line that I marked. That will make the ring large enough so that gap between the vinyl and the speaker grill will be perfect when you fold the vinyl in on the ring and install the grill. Depending on how thick your vinyl is will determine where you cut. Either on the line, inside the line or outside the line. You might need to cut a few rings to figure it out. You also need to figure out how thick the foam is where your speaker is. Example. One of the photos is from the side panels of the boat where the foam is thinner. The ring is white and look at how thin the ring is its 3/4 thick. Then you notice how thick the ring is in the open bow. Its much thicker twice the size because the foam is much thicker. I cut the rings with a Jigsaw. (Bosch) you need a high quality jigsaw for the thicker material or else the blade will bend and the ring will not be round. It will be all messed up. Fatter at the bottom and the correct size at the top sort of cone shaped. Or you can make a lot of dust by making a template and then using a plunger router.

The Remote holder. Its not finished. Itís just in white primer. It was made with Epoxy. Itís a cool new material that I have been having allot of fun with. Its a 2 part epoxy that you mix up and and shape like clay. Then I router it. It dries hard as a rock. After its dry you can machine it like aluminum or sand it like wood or plastic. I made a bunch of trim pieces and hard to make pieces with it. Compound curves filler spacers ect. The stuff works great.

By Big D (bigdtx) on Friday, April 06, 2007 - 9:06 am:    Edit Post Delete Post
That epoxy sounds really cool. Is that remote waterproof or will you have to make a cover for it? A billet one would be cool!

The remote is waterproof and it floats. It works form over 100 feet away. So you can attach it to your vest.

"G" It's a good thing you don't have an MC, or you'd be soo busy wakeboarding that you wouldn't have any time for the boat projects... LOL!!!

Yeah, I like the Remote mount. That epoxy sounds cool. Did you end up going with the deck that has bluetooth? Definitely be cool to link boat systems without wires.

Harold, what up buddy? Long time. I haven't seen you around the delta in days. I heard you turned the Ford into a monster truck.

Funny you guys mentioned it... The last time Carillo went dirt biking with us at stoneyford I had to jump his truck after he ran his battery dry flexin his beats. Ha, ha, ha....

What up Evan? Yeah man, havent been to the delta in a long time. Hopefully this summer will be different. Somewhat of a monster truck I guess? 10.5" on 38's.
Carrillo killed his battery? Thats all bad! haha! Good thing he had you there so he had some help. Thanks for helping a brotha out!

Post some pics. 10.5 and 38's sounds pretty respectable. Nice.

Take care.

Where did you get the remote and how much does it run? What Head unit is it compatible with?

By all eyez on me (ponte_06_x2) on Wednesday, April 11, 2007 - 7:10 am:    Edit Post Delete Post
do you guys believe that these cat 6 will replace rca's? i mean in the years to come? will the amp man start putting these on amps?
By C.I.E.....Evan (guido) on Wednesday, April 11, 2007 - 2:29 pm:    Edit Post Delete Post
Definitely a nice clean alternative.

Jared: The remote is by
They make it and Aline puts it in a Alpine box.
you can log on and see if the make a remote that workes with your Headunit. I know they make one for the Clarion. They also make a round remote that attaches or inserts into your horn button or the stearing wheel insert. I think I payed like $75 for the remote.

Jerry: I think if enought people start asking for the or buying amps or Eq's with RJ-45 and Balanced outputs then yes Cat5 might be the next RCA. I doubt that they would take over for RCA's. It would be nice to have a alternative to RCA's with the added bennifits of a Balanced noise rejecting cable's. Do you need them? NO. Can they work better than RCA's Yes. When installing its seems that you allways end up with a situation wher you have to cross a power line. Or you have a location where you dont have a choice but for your signal line to cross or come close to a noise genration peice. I.E. a line Alternator, Depth finder ect, you name it it can generate noise. Some systems have it some dont. Depending on what and where its comming from it can be a nightmare to chase down. It would be NICE for a product sutch as "Cat5 and a RJ-45 and a Balanced line" to take that nightmare out of the instalation shakedown process. Is Cat 5 comming? Good question. If it works better than RCA's then I hope so.
Aqua: Yes hook me up with some of thoes lines
I made the Cat5 to RCA conversion last weekend wher ethe Bass signal comes out of my EQ and I found that my Cat 5 is stranded solid core. Does that make sence? Each line has like 9-10 solid wires that make one wire. Making the converison was pretty easy. Arc has a diagram of what Cat5 colors power each speaker. All line +'s go inside the Rca and all line -'s go to the outside of the line pretty easy.

What would be very nice is to take home theatre technology and have an optical option sending a digital signal from the deck and having the amp programble to do the signal processing - selecting the right channel and frequency hi/low levels. Imagine one thin wire from the deck then daisy chain the signal from amp to amp and select what signal info you want the amp to produce. Sexy time, I like.

Alpine already has what your talking about. Most Alpine Headunits have a Optical. Some Alpine amps have it as well. To bad the Alpine amps dont have the nuts to drive big subs like W7s

Grant - With all the bass what do you do to combat rattling?
With just a 10 in my boat (granted it is much older) I begin to notice it with the right songs/beats that hit.

Luke: LOL thats funny where did you hear that?

Yes its true, I fired up the system and holy crap S#it started falling off the walls the clock fell off and broke. My brother came over and said a few pictures fell off his walls. LOL. I was pretty supprised. I have had a few systems in my garage and I thought it was pretty Bass proof . I guess the extra sub's and the New amp's and new boxes helped out. I know it will not be that wild when I take it outside in open air bummer but it is Bassin pretty hard. Clay was over tuning it in and we were both cracking up at how hard it was bumpin. Wanna see some pic's

Looks really good. I like the long amplifier line and I really like the way the front speakers look factory.
