To all, Fellow wakeboarder and WakeWorlder Danny Dean is in the Critical Care Unit this morning at Scottsdale Osborne Hospital resulting from a trampoline incident. I don't have too much info at this time except that he has a serious injury and cannot feel his legs. For those of you who don't know, Danny is a Arizona local pro and rides in the Outlaw division of the Arizona Wakeboard Association (AWA). Danny also volunteers his time and judges for the AWA. Oh yeah, he is also a really nice guy and an avid supporter of wakeboarding. This is a most unfortunate event and it couldn't have happened to a better person. We pray that Danny's injuries are only temporary and our thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family. Jerry Lembas Fluid Concepts |

I just spoke with the hospital (Danny's nurse) and Danny is still in CCU. His nurse couldn't tell me much but just that he was doing better. He will be moved out of CCU in a few days. She told Danny that I called and he told his parents to call me and give me an update. Legally she can't pass any info on over the phone. She did say that Jen had been in to see him though. So Jen probably knows more details. When he moves into a normal room then we can go visit. We'll keep you in our prayers Danny!! |
Hope you're feeling better soon, Danny! |
The Fu is with you! Get well soon!

RE: Danny Dean....Hi to all this is Danny's dad, Doug Dean. It is truly amazing and wonderful to see such support for our Danny!!! You riders rock! We just left Danny's room in ICU. He has sensations in all extremities but has no volutary control of any part of his body below his arm pits. He has limited use of his arms, cannot make a fist. Prognosis is guardedly optimistic. His surgery innvolved reconstruction of vertebrae C5 & C6 using cadaver bone and titanium plating to fuse the two rebuilt bones. The disc is shot and I'm still unsure as to what they did about that issue. At first, Danny was unable to breathe without the assistance of a ventilator but this morning he had the tube removed from his throat and he can speak again. His attitude is totally positive! He wants everyone to know he will ride again and he emphasized that your thoughts and prayer make all the difference. Your support also bouys our (his parents') spirits as well. THANK YOU! Doug & Becky Dean |
Forgot to mention special thanks to Jen Brewer and Katie Furniss, Mike, Brett, Sherri, and you other wake-riders who made the efforts to make Danny's day a lot brighter! Doug |
You will ride again Danny, stay strong bro. |
Danny, My thoughts and prayers are will you. And i hope you have a speedy recovery. |
hope you will be fine soon and see pics of you on your board.
This is terrible, but I'm happy to hear everyone is optimistic, and that he is moving and has feelings in all extremities. I hope it's not inappropriate to ask at this point, but does anyone know what exactly happened? |

OUR PRAYERS OUR WITH YOU DANNY! THE LYONS FAMILY |
don't know the guy, but hope danny makes a full recovery, this is the second tramp injury I know of in the last few weeks, scary stuff. |

To Danny and Family, When I got the call Monday morning from Jerry I was devastated. I think of all my members as family but you Danny have always been special to me. You have a great outlook on life and are a tremendous representative of both your religious beliefs and the AWA. My family and I, and your extended family (The AWA) are all praying for a full and quick recovery. I have seen you work hard to make great strides in your wakeboarding within a very short period of time. I remember "someone" telling me "No way you can bump me into the Outlaw class, I am not ready to compete against those guyz, They will kill me!" I was confident you would do well (and I was sick of you kicking my butt in the Advanced class ) You came out swinging and worked your butt off and had an incredible season finishing SECOND in the state!!! Your very first year!! I again am 100% confident in your abilities and in God that you will be out there to take the AWA Outlaw State Championship, just like you did a year ago in the Advanced Class. I am regretfully out of state on business, and can not come visit, but you can bet that board of yours that I will come visit as soon as I possibly can. Best wishes to you and your family in this difficult time, and know that there are many of us out there that love you, and are pulling and praying for you! As soon as we can we will try to get an AWA visit and over run your recovery room. Best Wishes On Behalf of the Arizona Wakeboard Association, Tom Bugg THE AWA!
Very well said Tom... Best wishes Danny. Josh |
Good luck and stay strong danny. It truly is all about a positive attitude--a good example is mike page (professional snowboarder). Keep your head up! |
I don't know you either Danny but my prayers go out to you and your family. Get well and stay strong! |
Best wishes for a complete recovery. One of my friends broke his neck several years ago and was told he would never walk again. This past summer he learned to wakeboard and wakesurf!
Danny, We're all praying for you. We know you will pull through this fine. |
don't know you, but my best friend broke his c-6 when we were in high school and he pulled through just fine. stay postive and heel up quick, summer is coming. |

Danny! You made the front page of Wakeworld!!! I haven't even been on the front page! This is all just a elaborate marketing scam! Man, you will do just about ANYTHING to market yourself and your product!!! I hope your feeling better. I should be getting back in town Thursday afternoon. I will get a hold of the hospital and if you are able to see visitors I will be there! Great article Dave, I was going to write you an e-mail to ask you to write something up, guess I didn't need to.. Your a class act. TomBugg THE AWA |

Here's to a speedy recovery, Danny. Pretty much all wakeboarders have that perseverance/tenacity gene running in overdrive. That will be one of your biggest allies in your recovery. I know you will be back soon, pushing it, again! |
Thanks for that fab article Dave! That definitely meant a lot to all of us. |
Hey Danny! I'm glad you're doing better! Hurting yourself doesn't get you out of AWA duties -At the very least - I expect you to help me out with the announcing at the tournaments this year! I'm sure everyone would love to hear a voice with some expertise that can "call all the tricks!" If that's not your bag - then you better get better otherwise you on the mic dude!!! -Danielle }} |
I just heard from Danny's dad this morning and he said that Danny was moved from the ICU to the TNMA (Trauma/Neurological Medical Center) wing of the hospital. If you're sending him stuff, check the updated address in the article (http://www.wakeworld.com/news/2004/dean1.asp.). Keep getting better Danny! |

Oops! Isn't it Thursday somewhere? |

DANNY!!!!! Our family's prayers are with you and your family! We have seen you perform for years and know that you are one of the most determined and courageous people we know. If anyone can pull through this, we know you can. We love you. Dave & Lisa Johnson |
God speed Danny. You are in our prayers. |
Danny! You are one of my best friends ever and most favorite people. I am so sorry that I cannot be there in Phoenix during all of this. So, I sent the next best thing-Matt! We thought you and Natalie would enjoy the nurse's kit. Now she is fully equipped to help assist you during your recovery. ;) On Sunday when I heard about your accident, I called all of the OG's in Vegas. I talked to Dennis, Greg, Clay and Amber. You have been in out thoughts and prayers ever since then. We all love you so much and have full faith in you and your speedy recovery. Danny-I know you will come out of all of this 125%! You are such a strong, motivated and driven person in every aspect of your life and I know this situtation will be no different for you. Remember all of those ghetto boats and crazy people we went to Mead with just to get a pull back in the day? We didn't care about the ride, we just wanted a pull out on the lake. We stopped at nothing just to wakeboard. That spirit and determination has brought you so far into the amazing rider that you are today. I know that you will be back on the lake doing whirly birds in no time. Your family, friends, even strangers, and your heavenly father are there for you now. You are so blessed to have so many caring people around you. You have been blessed with a strong body and mind and I know everything will be restored in full and that you will have your normal life back very soon. Remember that everyone in Vegas is routing for you from 600 miles away. We love you! Love eternally, Capra Jensen |
Hey Capra!! We miss you in AZ! I Talked to Danny on the phone earlier today He sounded GREAT! I can't even begin to say how uplifting it is to hear the spirit in his voice durring this incredibly difficult time for him. I could learn a lot from you Danny! This has really put things in perspective for me. Danny was so touched by all the posts on here. So, I ask all of you out there that just read the posts on here but do not post,...POST! let Danny know how you feel. It means soooo much to him right now, I can't begin to tell you! Danny has a immense amount of grueling work ahead of him. Your words help give him strength. Looking so forward to seeing you tomorrow Danny! Keep your head up and stay strong! Chrissy asked me to send her love. She also was devastated to hear the news, but is stoked to hear you are doing so well. Tom Bugg The AWA (Message edited by tombugg on January 28, 2004) |

I don't know you and I've never even heard your name before, but it feels as though a brother has been hurt. Stay strong BROTHER! Everyone is with you and God is watching over you.

Stay strong and hang in their Danny! |

The body does what the mind TELLS it to do. Strength is everything! |
Danny great to hear that u r getting better. and that u have good spirits about getting back on a board. we all know that it might be a while before that happens, but the time will be well worth it. Keep smiling and stay as happy as u can. It will help u through the days. I will keep praying for you. See u in the water again!!!!!! Karen (Message edited by kjmxer69 on January 28, 2004) |

Danny, through God you can get through anything! My families' prayers are with you! You'll be back! |
Stay strong Danny, all our thoughts and prayers are with you. Injury is just a set back in life that we have to over come, you will over come this one. |
Its sad. As hard as it is to say I think that we could all (all though a bummer)could live without wakeboarding (like if we had a broken arm), but (from the artical) he was a good person and he can not move his body. That is something I couldn't immagine. If I broke an arm or something wakeboarding that wouldn't be so bad because I could do everything else. I find it amazing to see all of the stories because I have enough pain when I scape my elbows. This was probably over 6,906,678 times worse. I send best wishes and hope you can get on your board in no time. |
A friend of mine was really effected by all of this and brought it to my attention. There are so many people that love and care for you out there, knowing that, stay strong and keep your head clear. My thoughts are with you, danny |
Dave Williams, (and everyone else). Danny Dean's Dad here again. I must tell you how supremely surprised Danny was this morning when I held up my laptop screen where his gaze could see the WakeWorld web-page and the wonderful article you featured on WakeWorld.com! I couldn't get on-line today at all until this late hour but you made one lucky young man very very happy as he lay paralized in his hospital bed. It was a total shock to him. I can't find the words to describe his face. He was so stoked! You have so enhanced Danny's mental state with your kindness. "Thank you" isn't a sufficient enough word to offer in return. This morning Danny had a severe bout of trying to cough up the crud that naturally collects in one's lungs each night and with no control of his diaphragm he couldn't generate enough wind to do the job. He was floundering in his own juices. With help from a respiratory therapist who performed a 'mini-Heimlich' (sp)manuever with each of Danny's efforts we were all relieved to see him finally get to taking normal breaths again. This happened periodically during the day but the drill got better with practice. The best physical news of the day was Danny discovered he can cause his abdominals muscles to tense ever so slightly! We high-fived on that one. Not much else to report but I have shown Danny each and every post on the Discussion Board and they are the very best thing for Danny right now and they are so very valuable to him. Thanks to all who have contributed. Danny wants to dictate a message in his own words to you all tomorrow and I will post it under his board4food1 ID. With much appreciation, Doug and Becky Dean and Danny too |
get well soon man dont ever give up! |
Hey, flexing his stomach muscles is a start, so that's good news! Stay positive and keep pushing! |

best wishes, danny. we're pulling for you! |

Danny best wishes to your full recovery ... My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. |

Danny: last night at the end of our small group bible study they asked if anybody had any prayer requests; I shared your situation and they all agreed to keep you in their prayers. My wife loves to pray-- serious, she gets up at 4:00 a.m. every morning to read her bible and pray for about two hours! As she crawled out of bed I woke up and reminded her to pray for you. My wife has the habit of hounding me, the kids, sometimes her friends but especially God (respectfully, of course) so you can be certain you will be prayed for in San Diego! She loves the story of George Mueller; she keeps a close track on whether her prayers are answered and if they are not she just keeps at it! It's her gift. Expect great things to happen because all things work together . . . |
Danny, I don't know you, but from what I have read about you, if anyone can pull through this situation, its you. What I have read has been an inspiration to me and helped me to realize that some of the things that I think I can't handle are very much manageable. God is with you through everything, keep your chin up and get back ripping soon. Tiffany Landry |
Danny, Keep praying and keep the faith. The POWER that made the body HEALS the body. Looking forward to seeing you ride again soon. Much love and health to you and your family. Dr.G |
danny, looking good, i know i just visited you today but after reading all these messages i felt like i had to post something, i was happy to see you were doing better after hearing from my buddies at school you were on a respirator, my favorite part of the visit was when we were taking off and you lifted your hand and gave me bones, by the way that hand looked tight, what ring were you wearing? haha the videos are coming, stay rockin, shred hard, tweak good, and bust big late, stinky |
Danny, as Tiffanator said, I don't know you either, and as from what everyone says your an awsome guy and you will get thru this! My prayers are with you, your friends and your family. take care bro |
Danny- Ever since receiving the message Sunday evening while josh and I are living up here in utah, I have spent quite a bit of time on my knees praying. Even though your family and friends are by your side we still wish we could be there for you. Danny you have always been not only a good friend but a great motivator. Hello - who else would have had the patience to teach me how to wakeboard. Remember all the times out at the Phillips lake (and your truck!), the early mornings with sarah, and those hundreds of shows. Not everyone has been as lucky as me to see your incredible strides in wakeboarding and guitar. Something that I noticed about you from day one was your motivation, your patience, and your way with people. These attributes will get you through anything! Danny, give it everything you've got these next couple of months, and when you think it might be too tough hand it over to the Lord. He knows you best! Take care and know you are in my prayers. Love Stephanie} |
Danny we will all see you on the water soon god speed and get well soon |

Danny- You dont know me but here in my house in Spokane Washington we are all praying for you. Congradulations on being able to flex those abs, you have to start somewhere. Hang in there, the big man upstairs will take care of you! |

WOW! I am overwhelmed by all the support I have from my family, friends and the wakeboarding community. I'd like to actually be typing this by myself but unfortunately I still don't have full range of motion in my arms and hands but it is getting better every day. (My mom and dad are helping me post this). You COULDN'T believe my surprise when my dad showed me Dave's article and the long list of posts on the discussion board. I'd like to personally thank Jen Brewer and her husband Jerry, Dave Williams, Tom Bugg, and Mike Cooper. Reading all of your posts has touched me deeply and I am drawing strength from your encouragement and hope. Every day I am seeing improvement. Wakeboarding has been one of my major lifelines and has always challenged me to improve and progress. It has given me an opportunity to meet awesome people and make long-time friends. Thanks again for all your prayers, love, e-mails and support. They will help me get better. My promise to you is that I will never give up. I will keep you updated on my progress. (See picture). With love, Danny Dean

How wonderful it is to read all the posts of people who share your passion for life. What a powerful message of love and care they send. Thank you to Danny's friends, Natalie, Mom and Dad for being there when other's aren't able to. Also, Danny, I told Sheba her "boyfriend" was addicted to hospital food and wouldn't be coming to visit us for a while. She said to give a bunch of sloppy wet kisses. :o) We love you!!!! Stay strong. Hey Danny, I'm writing this in blue and green because the taught us in nursing school that these colors have a soothing effect and aid in healing. \cyan That's totally funk, I know, but apparently studies have shown it. So}keep looking at this post. It will help you get better faster. Actually, I just discovered that you can post in different colors, and as you know, I'm way entertained by the simple things (remember how excited I got over Jason's perfect nipples at Roosevelt that one butter morning you were barefooting? His nipples made my day. LOL. Oh, yeah, that was the same day that Jason's sister was wearing that life-jacket that was way too big for her and someone said she looked like a hunch-back out there, and Russle said "Dude, don't say anything to her. She's really got tuberculosis!" Remember that time you hurt your hand and we went to the urgent care, and had a hard time finding a place to park with the boat, and I said, "Well, last time I just parked over there, and whoever was with us was like "Last time?" How many times have you been here?" Then was when I realized that with all the people I've pulled over the last few years, going to the Urgent Care from the lake was just part of the routine. Head cut open here, hand caught in the rope there, it's all in a day's riding. What's so unusual about having reserved parking at the Urgent Care? Duh!!!! I hope you're laughing at all of this, because the study of gelatology has revealed that laughter releases immune elements into the blood, which aids in healing, it increases your cells capacity to absorb oxygen, releases endorphins into your body which are the body's "natural morphine" (for reals, the chemical composition of endorphins is really close to that of morphine), and in the relaxation phase of laughter, it lowers your blood pressure and heart rate, so it's really true that laughter is the best medicine. With that being said, how about if whoever reads this posts their favorite joke for Danny. Make sure it's not a joke that degrades anyone, because apparently the healing properties are null if it's negative or sarcastic humor. Heal up soon, Danny. We must get my wakeboarding puppet well (said in a psycho voice). You see, I live vicariously through your talent. When I tell you to try a new trick, and you try it, and you land it, I feel a RUSH go through my veins as though it were ME!!!! Waaaaa haaaa haaaa haaa haaaa!!! I'm praying for ya, man. Love Sarah }

P.S. Vinney & Power say hi.

Hey Man Nice to read you. be strong and keep your good mood. take care |
Danny, Hey man. This is your cousin Joel dropping you a line. I'm so glad there is so much information about you on the web. This site has answered all the questions I had. It's easy to get information on star though I guess. There is such an outpouring of support for you that you must not be loser at all. You must be doing something right. I'll always remember our trip to Lake Powell after your mission. I still tell my friends about my cousin that can go so huge on a wakeboard. I often think what a kick ass snowboarder you would be. You are so talented with your body and I believe you will not allow yourself to remain in your current condition. I'm definitely in your corner man and I just want you to know that. I'm happy to read your message posted on this board. Your attitude sounds great. Anyways, fight the good fight and be strong. Love, Joel Huff |
Hey Danny. Let me just say how bad I feel for you. I know what its like to get hurt pretty seroiusly doing something you love. I tore all the ligaments in my knee last summer wakeboarding and I just had surgery a few weeks ago. It always hurts to hear about someone gettin injured in the wakeboard community, and my thoughts and the thoughts of all the other riders here go out to you, your family, and friends. Keep strong and remember that you can do anything as long as u try. |
Once again my prayers are with you and your family. Get better man. It's awsome to see the support of the wakeboarding community and hopefully our thoughts and prayers will help you recover as quickly as possible. God bless.
Danny, I am not sure if you are getting your e-mails so here is some good words from our boy Francis; "Hey Danny hope you get better soon! I'll be praying for you and a speedy recovery. Give me a call and when I am in Pheonix again I'd like to stop by. I am ready to ride when you are! Best Wishes! Doug and Becky let me know if there is anything I can do. Brian Francis" (I did not want to leave his Number on here so give me a call and I will get it to you. Hope to see you soon.) Mike or Tom can you please fw this to the Dean family for me. Thanks (Message edited by tombugg on February 02, 2004) |

I'll give you some advice from my football coach back in the day: "Just rub some dirt on it and get back in there!" So we'll see ya back going big in no time. And man...you one lucky guy w/ all these people praying for ya....cause I know it makes a difference! I'll add another one up to the Big Guy for ya! |

Danny, The whole gang here at Surfside is pulling for you. I personally know someone who suffered from a very similar injury about 13 years ago, she was in her 40s then and lives a great life now with no effects from it. Matching medical technology with your strong will all have mentioned and just realize that the time is the only thing that you must wait for until you can be back on the water soon. Danny Dean’s Dad here again. Since I haven’t been able to get to get my laptop fired up in the last few days to access the web, I just wanted to post an update on Danny’s condition/ progress. GREAT NEWS: After 11 days of little or no below-the-chest muscular improvement; on Thursday Danny found he can move his left leg a few inches!!! He has some new-found limited command of his quadriceps! Also on Thursday, Danny was moved from Scottsdale Healthcare Medical Care Center to downtown Phoenix to the Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph’s Hospital for rehabilitation. This facility has one of the best reputations in the nation for spinal injury rehab. They really know their stuff. Danny’ still in excellent spirits. I gotta dash for now but once again, Danny and his family are, indeed, grateful for all your kind and continual support for Danny! It’s working!!!! Doug Dean

Danny- Keep working man, we are all praying for you! Thanks for the updates Mr. Dean, we really appreciate them. |

Hello All! Danny here. Just thought I'd give everyone an update: (My dad is typing for me). I didn’t think this post would last this long. Thanks for all your love and support and prayers. IT’S WORKING! Good news: I have more movement in my left foot. I am able to wiggle my toes and I can bring my foot upward at the ankle. With the right positioning I can also lift my left heel up off the bed. The hospital staff is great and they’re taking good care of me. I do have a lot of night-time disturbances but the therapy is going well and I can tell it’s going to help. To all who know me personally and have posted on this site: I lost my cell phone a couple weeks ago so I need your phone numbers: i.e. Tom, Jennifer, Katie, Mike…..and whomever else. So please call me. To Mike and Tom: After 3pm is a good time for me on Friday. Please call and confirm. I will have my dad post some pictures soon. I will keep you posted in the future. Thanks again for all your thoughts and prayers!!!! Danny Dean www.enemyofevil.com (Message edited by board4food1 on February 10, 2004) |

Danny, that's a great sign that you are on the road to recovery. As I posted above, I have a friend that was told he would never walk again but now he's back riding BMX bikes, dirt bikes, and this year learned to wakeboard and wakesurf. It's a long road and a lot of hard work but it sounds like you have great family and friends to support you. Best wishes on a full and speedy recovery!
Danny- Joshua and I are flying in town for a day -- we'll be calling you to see if we can stop by. It sounds like you are making great improvements. Keep up the great work! Stephanie and Joshua |

Stay strong buddy,it's a good thing all these people are praying for you, it really does too, your in my prayers too (even though im not as close to you as some of these other people are) cody |

Hey Danny, My name is leo and im a wakeboarder from Louisiana. I heard what happened and I am trully sorry. I just learned inverts last year and am working on the tantrum. I am dedicating learning the tantrum to you in hope that you will recover. Keep up the work and know that you are in my prayers. |

Mike Cooper, Tom Bugg, and Walt Chantler stopped by my hospital room on Friday, the 13th of February. It turned out to be a very lucky day for me. In they walked, bearing gifts from all of you great friends from AWA and on WakeWorld.com. This put a huge smile on my face. The gifts they presented to me were made possible by a fund-raiser on my behalf. Mike, Tom, & Walt presented me with a Play Station 2, 7 - PS2 games, 2 wireless controllers and a memory card. I am overwhelmed with the wonderful gifts and your generosity. I want to give a special thanks to all who contributed. You made my day, week, month and year! You eased my pain and took my mind off my everyday hospital routine. I have great news! My neurosurgeon, whom I have the utmost faith in and respect for, came and visited me on Thursday night, February 12th. He spent several minutes assessing my muscular control progress, like the movement in my left leg and my left arm, etc. With a pleased look on his face and in a sincere manner he said to me, “My friend, you’re going to walk again,” but what I heard was, “My friend you are going to wakeboard again.” I realize it will not be an easy road or a quick journey. I am willing to put in the hard work and I promise not to slack off. I am so grateful for all who have been concerned about my well-being. I can’t say thanks enough for the overwhelming support and thoughtfulness of everyone who has had me in their thoughts and prayers. Thanks again for your encouragement and support! I would love to hear any/all of you. Your messages are like “food” to me. Danny Dean (602) 406-7291

Hey everyone, I don’t personally know Danny but have been watching this thread, and posted early on. I saw he posted his phone # and wanted to call him and just say Hi and give him my best. I wanted to let everyone know who doesn’t know him and is afraid to call like I was that’s it is cool to call and check in. Danny is a cool guy and was up beat and was excited to talk, it was great talking with him. Ill keep checking back in, I’m sure he would like to hear from everyone, Just use common sense, when calling ya know don’t call late ect. Even though Danny seems like the kind of guy that wouldn’t care whenever ya called, He is in AZ so just be aware of the time difference, Danny Dean hot line (602) 406-7291 Take care Grant

I talked to Danny today very briefly (he was just starting a PT session) but he sounded really good. Danny is very gracious and thankful for everyone who contributed to the PS2, the games, memory card and controllers. I could tell by his tone of voice that he was moved by all of this. He's just waiting on getting a VCR in his room so he can plug that badboy in and play! (the tv in the room is an old one with none of the output plugs ) Danny - thanks for talking with a "stranger" for a few minutes, I know you'll be back on the water in no time. I'll check back in with you at another time and hope to catch up with you then. Lynsey (Message edited by buttacup on February 16, 2004) |

Hey Danny! Glad to hear you're doing great! Keep up the good spirits - you'll acheive all of your goals in no time! I was snowboarding 3 1/2 months out of acl reconstruction! Just work hard - mind over body - you can do whatever you set your mind to! I know you can!!! |
“My friend, you’re going to walk again,” but what I heard was, “My friend you are going to wakeboard again.” That has got to be the coolest thing I've read in awhile. I wish you the best, we're praying for you. B- |
Yes! The phone calls are great. If anyone else is thinking about it, please call after 3:00 pm (AZ time). Danny www.enemyofevil.com |
Hey danny its kyle, just read the great news. that is great man. i thought the same thing that you did when i read that, it made me laugh. keep up the good work and giving all of us the info. hope to talk to you soon. Kyle Dean |
Danny, I just spoke with you and you didn't say anything about the VCR, did you get one? Are you all hooked up? Would a portable TV help? Let me know before our visit on Thursday and I'll make sure and bring whatever you need. Sorry to have interupted your visit but good to talk to you. Steve |
BTW, everyone, I guess Danny moved to a different room today, so his number is no longer the same. You'll need to call 602-406-3000 and ask to be transfered to his room. I forgot to ask for the number. Steve |
Danny's Dad here...I thought I’d post a picture of Tom Bug and Mike Cooper representing the presidency of the Arizona Wakeboard Association at the time they presented Danny with the PlayStation 2 and all the games their fund-raising activity generated. Walt Chantler was also there to give the items to Danny but was not available at the time of the picture. Thanks again to all who participated in helping to make Danny truly feel energized by your kindness! NOTE: Danny was moved into another hospital room today and has a different phone bedside number. He is now in room #7 at the Barrow Neurological Institute. His bedside phone number is now (602) 406-7113. Doug Dean

Happy Birthday to you!!! Hope your birthday goes great. And just letting you know that Joshua and I are still praying for ya. Love - Stephanie and Joshua |

Hey Danny it's your aunt, Paula. Wow! - This is the first chance I've had to actually read this discussion board. What a great feeling it must be to know that you have touched so many lives personally, not to mention the ones who don't even know you. You are truly an inspiration to more people than you'll ever know. Kyle hopes to be down to see you in the next couple of weeks. Jeff and I are hoping we can follow shortly thereafter. We think about you constantly and pray for you continually. My Dad puts you on the temple prayer list every time he can. I think he said he can only do it once every 3 weeks, I know you are on every prayer list that exists. Keep your spirits up and stay optimistic. Mind over matter. Love ya - Paula |

Hi again. I just talked to Danny today. He's feeling better after a bad bout of dehydration, nausea and a combination intestinal/bladder infection. He had to go back on IV feeding for a couple of days because he couldn’t hold down any food. He missed a few days of physical therapy due to these set backs but he’s been able to attend PT again as of Friday. His power wheelchair has arrived but his queasy stomach isn’t up to testing the thing’s total handling capabilities quite yet. More good news: Danny’s recovered some more muscular control on the left side of his body, including his calf, and some limited finger movement. His left arm is growing stronger and he his able to pretty much feed himself with a spoon. We are still waiting for his right side to come back on line. His spirit is strong and he has a terrific attitude. He is receiving lots of great support from his friends, family and even from many complete strangers. A huge THANKS to all who have been so willing to take the time to make his days brighter! He’s received several neat phone calls. He’d love to hear from anyone who wishes to call. (602) 406-7113. After 2:30 pm Mountain Time is best. Thanks! Doug Dean

Danny when is that you had a birthday? If it was the 21st, we share the same birthday. Though I have a torn ACL and can't ride I do go out and get some water/drive time on Sunday. The riding out here on the Delta this time of year is sweet. Happy Birthday man, you are making a ton of progress! |
Glad to hear he's moving more and more. Great news. |
Danny, Great to hear about the positive progress you're making. Keep up the good work you'll be back in no time!
Great news, you will remain in my prayers!!! |
Keep up the great progress, |
Thanks for all the encouragement. This week in physical therapy has been great. We are working on sitting balance, since I have none. Since I actually reached 4 minutes of balancing on my own in a sitting position, lots better than the 40 seconds I did yesterday. We are starting to see movement in my right wrist which is a great sign. Also, my fingers in my left hand have more dexterity than ever. My physical and occupational therapists are awesome! I couldn't ask for a better team to help me out. They really know their stuff! A huge thanks to WakeWorld, Dave Williams and Brian Grubb for the videos, stickers and signed posters. I love it! The window stickers will be on my Trail Blazer as soon as possible to support you guys like you support me. Once again phone calls are welcome (602) 406-7113 and the prayers and support are greatly appreciated. Thanks to all, Board On! Danny Dean
Actually, our own Billj is the one that remembered to get that poster signed by Grubby, so he deserves props for that. I'm glad you liked everything! Keep getting better!! |
Thanks for the updates Danny its always inspiring to check the form and see how you are doing. We will make sure and keep the prayers coming from Spokane, Wa. |
Sounds like a matter of time to me. Good Luck with your therapy. |
More good news! Danny has reported the very first signs of minor muscle activity in his right leg. He can contract a region in his upper-inner thigh. ALSO: He has seen a new motion manifest in his right wrist. These are his first gains on his right side! Danny's really exited. He's back on regular food now and enjoying a full PT schedule again. He say's all your prayers and support ar doing their job so don't stop now! He wants to be back on the water ASAP. Doug Dean |
Hey Danny just heard the great news about the movement from your right side, that is great and it sounds like your making a ton of progress in physical therapy. Well i am still planning the trip to come down there, but it's not going to be this week, because of baseball tryouts and school stuff, but i'm going to really put in the effort to be down there in the few following weeks. i promise. And i just read that Brian Grubb sent you a ton of stuff, i think that is way cool, because i got his autograph at the boat show and a few others too, it must be a family thing. Well keep up the good work and spirits. I'll be praying for you and the family. Kyle Dean |
Well thanks to bill then! Everybody was wondering why i didn't have any wake posters up. The videos are great to. I actually filmed some of the footage in the premier video, and i'm in the wreck session at the end attempting a temper-tantrum. it's like the 3rd to last wreck before the end. Thanks again! My right leg is getting stronger and things are looking up! Thanks for all the support! Danny www.enemyofevil.com |
Hey Danny, great to hear that things are getting better for you, keeping you in our prayers each day. Did Sushi get into see you last week? I know he was going to try, I was going to go with him but I had school. Keep on recovering bro and you'll be back on the water in no time |

Hey Danny, I'm from LA and haven't been boarding all that long. This is actually the first thing I've posted in months. Let me just say this, I was astonished at the number of people who have posted replies on here. And not just the fact that 154 people have posted but the fact that 154 people who care and are willing to take the time out of their day to think about, pray for, and help someone else. This just goes to show how many careing individuals there are out there. Tom Bugg was right, we are all just one big happy(wakeboarding) family. Hope you recover soon Danny, I'll be praying for you. Scott |
Hi Everybody, Due to some necessary flooring renovations, Danny has been moved to a new room at the hospital. This means he has a new bed-side phone number: (602) 406-7294 He'd love to hear from you. Danny's still making improvements almost daily. His leg muscles are getting stronger and more coordinated. The latest new muscles to wake up are his right quadriceps. This means he will be able to lock his knee in a straight position for standing. He has had several sessions of standing up at the parallel bars without light-headedness. Now we need his right hamstrings and his right hand/wrist to join in with his other muscle groups and then he'll have most all his major muscles groups showing activity. He's also been doing VERY well at running his new PlayStation 2, (using just his left hand). He's really having fun with it! It's great therapy for his hand-eye coordination and he says it has truly helped the days to pass more quickly. Thanks again for all the continued support and prayers! Doug |
hey danny just wanted to let you know that i really dig the shirts, they're awesome. And i think that the fundraiser went really well and we still have more stuff to auction off so we're not done yet. talk to ya soon and keep up the good work, your going to be back on the water sooner than you think. We're prayin for you. |
I don't check the boards often enough. I'm thinking of you. Keep improving. Lisa |
good news everybody! they have me walking in paralell bars now! it feels so great to be on my feet again. i'll be on the water sooner than i thought. kyle - thanks, we love all you are doing for us. glad you like the shirts choose your side danny www.enemyofevil.com |

Woo hoo! I think you're making stellar progress there. Sounds like you will have a great summer. Keep it up. Lynsey |

That's awesome, keep up the good work! Thanks for keeping us updated on your progress. Mark |

p.s. i'm engaged!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i'm the luckiest guy on earth! her name is natalie and she means the world to me! |
Wow!! The good news just keeps on coming!! Who would have thought that one of the best years of your life started with you breaking your neck! Way to keep your chin up. It's great to watch somebody with so much courage!! Keep it up! |
Danny - Congrats on the engagement and the awesome recovery progress. You're exactly right, you'll be on the water in no time. I have a friend who, a few years back, broke his neck while riding (rope got wrapped around it, whirlybird, I think). Less than 6 months later, he was back, riding at about the same level as he was before the accident (with the same rope, I would have burned it). Wakeboarders have this tenacity that makes them thrive through adversity. You demonstrate this in the most extreme sense.
Wow, congrats to both of you. |
Danny, congrats to both you and Natalie, she's beautiful and seems like she has a big heart, I'm glad to hear she's been with you during this amazing struggle you've made. I'd like to say that you've been my light. In Feb. I ruptured my ACL and tore my miniscus, against doctors orders I've been both on the slopes and on the water, even made a purchase of a new board and bindings for my birthday! You've given me the inspiration and hope. I'm not sure exactly the damage at this point, I've yet after three weeks of waiting received authorization for and MRI. I've gone through two weeks of PT and have been told the only thing holding me together is the muscle strength of my legs. I'm riding with little to no pain, but feel the pain two days later..... Again CONGRATS to you and Natalie....you make and awesome couple and your strength and determination is what has guided God to give you such a quick rehabilitation.... Best of luck to you and God Bless (Message edited by jetgofish on March 16, 2004) |

Hey Danny, it is amazing, the progress you are making is unbelievable, but its true and amazing. Congrats on the engagement to both of you, she is a beautiful woman, and if anyone deserves her, you do. Keeo |
oops! I wrote the above postage, but what i was saying is to keep up the good work, and good things will just keep a comin. We're praying for ya man. Kyle Dean |

just wanted to tell everybody that things are going great and thanks for everybody who contributed to the AWA fundraizer. the PS2 is so fun and is helping with my finger dexterity. teri - i know that any degree of injury is tuff and time heals. lets keep our hopes hi! danny |
Yo Danny, sorry to hear about the accident, but glad to hear that you are making a recovery. I am new to the WAKEWORLD website but it is great too see the response you have recieved. I am an Arizonian and am always looking for people around the state who feel as strongly about wakeboarding as I do. I am sure you are already itching to ride, but take it slow...and when the time comes we should take out my ride and board for the day. That goes for any others out there who want to be a third or are looking for a third. IM OUT... KYLE |
danny, dude, wordup, i just spent like 20 minutes writing you but since i am not the sharpest bowling ball, i lost it. let me know if you get this and i will write more, peace out, chris |
Hey Danny, I have been watching all of the posts and letting everyone else areound me know your condition. Everything sounds great! Just know that there are more people out there in AZ that are thinking of you, and pulling for you. Hope you can get back in the boat with me to help judge. It always seems like you are on my left during every division that I pull in the AWA. Look forward to seeing you back on the left side of the boat with a judging sheet in your hands, you always help out a lot! Brett Endter |
Danny, que hongos carnal? que transa por tus venas? todo chido por aca. dude, that is so sweet that you are walking on the parallel bars. keep up the hard work man. a few weeks ago we went to that fundraiser for you at that geto pool hall. it was like one in the afternoon and there was all these people there playing pool, and I was like 'dude, do these people have nothing better to do, they probably just play pool all day long, what a bunch of losers,' but then i found out that they were all there playing in the tournament for you and i felt like a horses patute for making fun of them. that is sweet that so many came out, and they were all buying your shirts and stuff, it was awesome. dude, I can't believe that you are my cousin, you are a pro wakeboarder, you have your own clothing company, and you have a beautiful fiance. I am just a nerd who gets pissed off when the library closes early on friday and saturday nights, I haven't figured out how to talk to girls yet, and I have a nasty mustache (hence my user name). I went down to mexico last week to build houses, i love that place. you are coming with me on the next trip. i ate a ton of tacos al pastor. well man, hang in there, keep working your gutz out and you'll and be riding again soon. you will have to teach me a few things about the ladies someday. get crazy with the cheez whiz, peace out, chris |
danny, i wanted to show you a picture of some of my kids in mexico. mexican child support makes me send them a burrito a week. chris

Danny my name is Raymond I was the one that through the pool tournament at the West Valley Billiards. I had the pleasure of meeting your father who I think is an exceptional man. He has a true devotion to you and your well being he spent 13 hours with the people from the pool hall meeting and greeting every person who entered the tournament. All though the party crowd is not the normal croud he would surrond himself with he was totaly amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know I don't know you from Adam but when your Uncle Jeff told me of your accident, his eyes welled over. I don't know him to be a soft kind of man so when he talk with emotion I knew it was serious . I have always been told that you were a very special young man. I felt someone needed to let you know that you were being thought of I have received a lot of credit for the pool tournament but so much of the credit needs to go to your Aunt Paula and your Uncle Jeff they were as big of a part as anyone else there tireless efforts made my job easy it was truly a major team effort so many different people from different walks of life joined in to help it just goes to show you that people who come from different backgrounds all can agree the value of human life and the wellbeing of others is more important than our difference of lives. I just want you to know it is ok to have a bad day as long as you don't let the bad days outway the good You have a huge task ahead we are all behind you but if you decide you are going to give in then I will be the first one to hop a plane and come down to AZ and plant my foot, well you know the rest. When the time comes for me and you to meet all I want is for you to STAND UP AND SHAKE MY HAND DON'T STAND ME UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When it get's rough don't you hesitate to call!!!! ( 801 949- 4482 ) Your newfound friend Raymond D. Allison ( OZZY RULES )

well i'm sure you all are sick of seeing this post reappear at the top of the list but a lot of people who dont post that watch the thread, have been asking for an update. well i'm definetely not the same person (physically or mentaly) i was a month ago. both aspects have improved. i'm making great efforts and acomplishments towards becoming independant. thats the main goal in neuro-rehab. my therapists are truely great people that help me focus on whats important and my personal goals. even when i dont believe i will be able to do something as simple as put a sock on, they help me make it happen. i also have a new respect and love for nurses and CNA's. we have been working real hard with my right arm and leg these past few weeks. my left side is doing awesome! i have all my muscles working and getting stronger, on the left side. i've become pro at one handed typing and i force myself to use all my fingers to help dexterity. just ghis past week my right thumb and pinky have started moving on command. i was pretty worried for a while about that hand but i know that it's all coming back with time. my favorite thing is walking! it's pretty crazy to have to teach your body something that has been so taken for granted and so easy to do your whole life. i can walk farely well in a walker, but after about 100 ft my right leg becomes very week and i start dragging it. they also have me working in a light gait. its a grown ups version of a baby walker. let me give you a good comparison. lets see, i used to lay around, wet the bed and wear dippers when i got out of bed. i was always ucomfortable and couldnt do anything about it. my mom or girlfriend had to feed me. i couldn't get dressed, brush my teeth, or shower on my own. i felt like i was 6 months old all over again. now all that is behind me. there's only a few things that i cant do and they all involve two hands or two feet. i.e. walking, tying my shoes...ect. so we'll say that i'm about 9 months old now. i think i started walking at 10 months when i was a baby, so i guess thats the goal. i started skiing when i was 4 yrs. lets hope there's not a three year gap this time. i couldnt have acomplished this so quickly if it wernt for the huge support group i have. it's people like my mom and dad, fiance natalie, my fiends, tom bugg, mike cooper, Raymond D. Allison, my cousin kyle and his family, and all of you. you all make this horrible process worth fighting through. you all are true "Enemies" of Evil... we have set our wedding date for july 17th here in mesa. email me for details if you would like to attend the reception. ALL ARE INVITED!!! seriously keepitpunk@enemyofevil.com thanks for all your prayers and support! choose your side Danny Dean www.enemyofevil.com (Message edited by board4food1 on April 02, 2004) (Message edited by board4food1 on April 02, 2004) |

That's awesome, you've got some great people surrounding you! You're right many of us who haven't posted in a while are still watching your progress and hoping for your continued improvement - so keep us informed. You say your left side is strong? It sounds like you're ready to ride, regular stance only of course. Stay strong! David |
Danny: Definitely continue posting the updates. It's interesting to read about how you are recovering mobility. I guess I've always wondered what the "path" would be away from a catastrophic injury like you suffered. We now know the exact width of an angel. My heart also goes out to those with similar injuries who will not regain normalcy, as you will. For them, I'd hope that you would do great things with the grace the Lord has given you and your family. |
Keep the updates coming Danny. This is very uplifting stuff and it's great to see the progress you are making! |

I received an e-mail from Danny's dad Doug on Monday and in it he told me Danny was walking!!!! I got a chance to talk to Danny on the phone today and confirmed that he is able to get up and walk across the room with out the assistance of a walker!!! This is GREAT news and reason to celebrate! With that said Danny still has a great deal of work ahead of him, he will have many months if not years of rehab. And will need work out equipment. If any of you have anything laying around your house and would like to donate it to Danny's cause please contact me @ thomas.bugg@honeywell.com , otherwise the AWA will be doing some sort of a fund raiser to get Danny the equipment he needs .. I am going to hold true to my promise and video him walking out of his hospital, and will be posting that on Wakeworld soon!! I want to personally thank each and everyone of you who have posted and prayed for Danny. You have all made a difference!! |

I Just had lunch with Danny and his mother Becky at Islands Burgers. As an encore, Danny had me in tears in the parking lot when he walked from his wheel chair to the car. I can't begin to tell you all how inspiring it was to sit across from this man who, not three months ago was totally paralyzed... He really is incredible! Thank you so much for the inspiration Danny!!! (Thanx for lunch Becky! It really made my day!!) Becky took a picture of Danny and I standing in front of Islands. I will try to post if I get a copy of it. (Message edited by tombugg on April 08, 2004) |

Keep rockin Danny. You are defininition of inspiration and what you have done can teah tons of people to never give up on anything. I, like everyone else on WAKEWORLD are looking forward to your first run of the season and it is only a matter of time until that goal comes true. I do not know if you or family will be up to it, but it would be a pleasure if you took a trip out to Bartlett Lake this weekend. I plan on taking my boat out (98 Malibu Sunsetter VLX) and camping friday and saturday night, there will be two other boats out there, a DECKED out Centurion anda brand new X STAR with some great riders and people who love to party. If you or anyone else who reads this is interested and loves to party and wakeboard, then head out to Bartlett, Look for the biggest houseboat on the dock and thats where we will be. Kyle D. |

HOWZIT DANNY: Greetings From South Africa I've only been wakeboarding for a few months now and have entered a few local competitions already. But one thing struck me as the comp went on: ALL THE COMPETITORS WERE CHEERING FOR EACH OTHER. Even though the novices (incl me) went first, all the more experienced guys that compete on national level were clapping and shouting for the little guys, sometimes also giving advice. There's no snobbishness or anyting like that. The wakeboarding community is definately an unique breed of person, always helping out his fellow man (or woman) whether it be a competitor or just a friend.(Show me another sport where that happens!) Witnessing what is happening on your side of the world, with all the support that you're getting is testimony to that. Get well soon and I will DEFINATELY be waiting for that video clip of you getting up on that board. Cheers & Good luck! Tim. |
