So I'm trying to plan a Powell trip and was wondering if a 5-day trip over Labor Day weekend is a bad time to go. My biggest question is the boat traffic. I would think you could find some private spot no matter the weekend. Not really sure what to expect, esp. since i've never been. Anyone been over the holiday weekend? Utter madness? Worth it to wait it out a week or two? Maybe everyone will go to Havasu that weekend.

It shouldn't be too much worse than normal. The weekends get a little crowded but the rest of the week it is usually really nice. We usually wait to go the week after Labor Day and its awesome! Everyboady stops going after Labor Day, the winds usually aren't as bad, and the water is the perfect temp. Smooth water all day!

Thanks, that's what I was hoping. With gas prices these days, I'd think even less boats will make it out. I was initially planning on the week or two after, but conflicting schedules may force us to go over Labor day.

labor day is definately the last "Hurah." But powell is HUGE, so you should be ok, especially bright and early in the mornings!

surprisingly, the stretch of water between wahweap and the dam is pretty nice because most everyone gos through the castle rock cut into warmcreek and up... but maybe you are not going to the wahweap side. I have never been past rainbow bridge up lake, so i am not much for telling how it is up there.

Your right about gas though. gas has been keeping the numbers a little lower this year. the numbers of foreigners is probably as high as ever if not higher for similar reasons. their money is more over here now. but most of them are taking tours and most of them are hitting powell now. but these are all just observations/ guesses. i don't keep track of the real numbers/statistics.

any questions about page or questions you'd like to ask a local, just shoot.
