40 deg air and 62 deg water? All I have is a 3/2 full wetsuit.

That's doable.

It falls into the 100 degree rule, but no way would I do it in a 3/2. 4/3 maybe. Drysuit definitely. If you can ride without falling and maybe start off a dock, that would help.

How did the water get so warm and the air so cold?

The weather did a number on us. Been 80s and 70s for a few weeks now it is 30-40s. The water temp has been falling a little each day.

I just went when the air was 80 deg but the water was a wonderful 37 deg. My theory is do a dock start and dont fall and end the run at the dock.

Sorry for the hijack:

Peter,
What is the 100 degree rule?

By Will Jiron (chikara22) on Saturday, April 07, 2007 - 3:03 pm:    Edit Post Delete Post
The air and water temp added together in (degrees Fahrenheit) greater than or equal to 100 degrees.

I like the 100 degree rule, but I find myself using the 110-120 degree rule. Water at 50 and air at around 60-70 degrees.

Been the water with the air at 45 and water about 38, can't say it was the most pleasant ride in the world but it gave me alot more ambition not to fall.

Dude for sure go, i would be all over that in a second. Where i live is colder then it was the majority of december so its not looking good for unrserved ridding soon. Warm water is so much better then cold air because you can cover up from the cold air, i would try getting a neo hood and use some waterski gloves cuz your hands will get cold. 3/2 is nice in 62 degree water and avoid the dock start/stop thing... the water is way to warm to get hypothermia.

Ah man, we went. The water was warm but the damn wind picked up on us. We made a few passes but the wind screwed us all up. My face was freezing, everything else was ok. Will try again tomorrow. Thanks for all the replies

62 water is warm! Perfect weather to try new stuff-when the water is warmer than the air.
