It's my first season behind the new boat. I'm finding that I'm bailing on really basic straight airs, the same way each time. I pop off the wake, and feel like I'm floating sideways until eventually slam on my back.

I'm thinking maybe too much weight on my back foot? or not tall enough at the wake???

looks to me man, like you are leaning back too far over your back foot. You need to stay on top of your board. Normal ratio is 60% of weight on your back 40% on your front. The key thing I would tell you to focus on it staying on top of your board.

I just noticed, about at the 26 second mark of the vid, it kind of looks like I jerk the handle down and towards my trailing hip.

maybe that has something to do with it???

weight 50-50 on both feet and edge progressively, looks like you let up a bit when you get to the foam. keep your edge going to the top of the wake.

there's no reason to be anything but 50-50 with your weight. you can put 90% of your weight on your front foot and you won't go under, assuming your speed is relatively normal (looks like it is). you'll have much better control at 50-50.

and with the handle, try to keep it on your lead hip for a straight air.

How are your smaller jumps and cutting around? Can you slash the wake? Can you perform an Ollie and a 1 wake jump well? It almost looks like your charging too hard too quickly.

and as for charging hard, I kind of feel like I need to in order to clear the wake???

to clear the wake you only need a short progressive edge. The farther out you go the more likely you will come off edge and land short, then you start thinking you need more speed and start going farther out...viscous circle

i put more weight on my front foot when going wake to wake. it seems to give me more pop and more distance with less effort

jack...ur letting off of your edge about 6 feet from the wake, causing u to lose speed & case the wake. u want to hold ur edge until the last second. right at the top of the wake stand tall( like ur standing "at attention"). this should help u clear the wake. if u practice this u'll learn u dont need to cut out as far to clear the wake successfully. hope this helps! good luck!

Good info already posted, heres my take.

- Youre putting too much pressure on the back foot. get it closer to 50/50

- You need to keep your edge a little better through the wake. Its ok to fly through the air in the same body position as when youre cutting.

- Stand tall better. Its a tough habit to break, but youre trying to jump with your legs, and youre not fully extended at the wake lip. Really lock those knees like a trampoline or a diving board.

make sure you stand tall at the lip of the wake and try to keep the handle towards your front hip. it looks like you are getting plenty of speed and you have a good edge so just stand tall keep the handle at your hip and let the board do the work
