She Who Has the Gold: Maeghan Major

Maeghan Major
Even after stacking one, the smile remains.
WW: What motivates you to achieve your goals?
MM: My love of the sport.

WW: What surprised you the most about riding on the pro tour?
MM: How annoying the politics can be.

WW: What do you mean my annoying politics?
MM: Just people talking. They make up stupid stuff.

WW: So it's the gossiping?
MM: Yea.

WW: What has been the biggest drawback of riding on the pro tour?
MM: Traveling. Being stuck on an airplane seated between a 300lb guy snoring and a lady with a screaming baby for three hours (laughs).

WW: Who are the greatest influences on your riding?

Maeghan Major
Throwing a tantrum.
MM: Kyle Schmidt-super smooth, P.J. Marks-flawless form, Rob Reid-attitude and Mike McLin-confidence.

WW: Which riders do you admire most in the sport? Give us one man and one woman.
MM: Darin and Andrea.

WW: Why?
MM: Andrea because she's brought women's wakeboarding so far. She was with it way back when she had to compete against the guys. And Darin just because he's the best.

WW: Which riders do you admire least?
MM: Anyone who whines about judging.

WW: Have you ever whined about judging?
MM: yeah (laughing), I have. But the judging leaves quite a bit to be desired sometimes, in fairness.

WW: What are your favorite moves right now?

Maeghan Major
Wrapped KGB - a favorite.
MM: A wrapped KGB and about any move I can take into the flats.

WW: How did you get hooked up with Neptune?
MM: I talked to them at Worlds about it and told them I wanted to do the Pro Tour and I told them how I did at Worlds. I just kind of went from there. They really just took a chance on me.

WW: Tell us about your wakeboarding set up. Board, boots, fins, handle and boat speed.
MM: I am riding a Neptune Raid with Contact bindings, 2.0 G-Fins, Straight Line rope and handle all at 22mph.

WW: What's it like being on the tour while you're still in high school?
MM: I attend a distance high school, so I do all my studies by mail and over the Internet. It is different than home school. I take college prep courses and will get a real diploma instead of a G.E.D., but it takes longer than a normal school year.

Maeghan Major
Landing hard in the flats and pulling it off.
WW: How do your friends react to you being a professional athlete?
MM: All of my friends, both on and off the tour, are extremely supportive.

WW: Where does the most pressure come from? Parents? Sponsors? Peers? You?

MM: My Dad. He goes to all the stops with me and makes me nervous sometimes.

WW: How important is winning to you?
MM: Hey, it's the Pro Tour and it's my job. I just want to do it the best that I can and hopefully win occasionally.
